It is going to be hard for me to hide 3 G5 1 G4 and 1 G3 on Sunday.... and I do not think a marker can help me :p

Good luck :D

I stopped trying to camouflage them (it proved to be futile) and now subscribe to the hiding in plain sight through volume strategy. Enough boxes & monitors sitting around and they all just sorta blend together in a big blur to the non enthusiasts.

If it gets really bad, say nothing and simply point at the closet full of shoes, expensive purses etc. There is no shame in my game.

The issue for me is the space, while she cannot argue about quantity, as you I also experience her having more shoes and purses that a woman can use in her entire life, but the whole package she has takes a lot less space....

I boarded my loft. It had oodles of space. Now a good half is filled with my collection. Getting the larger items out is a bit of a struggle. I will be doing work on my moribund 8600 presently (a 9600 LB should be in the post soon) and that is wedged behind a ton of Sparc Ultrastations, old PCs and other peripherals.

Perhaps I need to get into shoes and handbags instead.

Good luck :D

I do believe I have now perfected this strategy. The little lady actually came along recently to assist me in collection of 2 free iMac G3's. Mind you, the fact that I said I planned to donate them may have played some part. But one can always change one's mind.......;)

THIS is what you need. How to camouflage paint........

Well I ended up loosing the deal, and in a way I am relieved (I mean where to put 5 computer at once?) but still bummed, for the price it was a heck of a deal, BUT, that made me realize.... I really want a G5, so off searching for a good deal!

Well, I am back.... and snatched 2 G5 one Dual 1.6 and one Dual 2.0 ...the price was definetly right and could not resist, and the wife was ok about it (wich is a bonus :D).

I wonder how much of a jump it will be from the Dual 867 G4 MDD (768 mb ram) to the Dual G5 2.0 (4 gb ram).... also considering putting an SSD on that :D:D:D

One question, since i have a 21:9 monitor (2560x1080) is there a way to make it support that resolution?

Awesome news YaBe! The dual 2.0 should make a nice upgrade from the MDD. I wasn’t aware of a Dual 1.6, is it a single or possibly a Dual 1.8Ghz?

An SSD will make an improvement in boot and app launch times, general snappiness and reduced noise (no HDD chatter). At least with the G5, you don’t need to adapt to IDE and you can get full SATA 1.5Gbps throughput on an SSD.

For the 2560x1080 res, you will need to have a “Dual-Link DVI” capable GPU. My understanding is that dual link sends two DVI signals down the one pipe and the monitor and OS seamlessly stitch it all together as one display for a maximum output of 2560x1600.

I can confirm that the GeForce 6800 GT (256MB) GPU in my G5 Dual 2.0 can drive my 27” WQHD display over DVI at 2560x1440. But it causes me some serious squintage (there’s no HiDPI/retina support in Tiger and limited unofficial support for a scaled UI in Leopard), so I put a 19” 4:3 1280x1024 on it to make things easier on the eyes o_O

Yes you are right it is a single 1.6 :p right now the MDD is running stretched on that display, I was hoping for a way to make it run "native" on the G5 , I really don't want a smaller screen.

It is going to be a long wait till the 8th ( the day I will recieve the computers ), and kinda sad for my MDD, wich will surely be used less.

The early stock graphics cards (GeForce FX5200 or Radeon 9600) don't support dual-link DVI. You'd need a Radeon 9650 or GeForce 6600.

The 1.6 would have shipped with an FX5200, the 2.0 will depend on the model as it came in two different dual processor and a dual core variant over the years.

Well the guy did not know much, all he has is thisimages (the price was very low and could not pass it...and if the wife says yes you know it's a deal!)

Looks like a dual DVI ....

Looks like a C19 power socket, i.e. Dual Core rather than dual processor. Those shipped with 6600LE PCIe cards.

Yes it does indeed look like a single CPU dual Core, wich I don't know if it is better or worse (for my usage) but eager to find out.

Looks like this one with a lower spec HD (stock was 160 this is a 80), all in all I am quite happy to test it :D

EDIT:
A newly sent pics shows that it is definetly a single CPU :p

Will definetly need a cleaning, and the pic was probably taken with a soap bar....

Dual 2.0 > DP 2.0 in every way unless you have a stack of AGP/PCI cards you wanted to fill it with. Or run Panther without hacking.

I have no other card to put in, and definetly running Leopard, and CS4 (wich is currently running on my MDD), seems to me I got a better deal than I immagined, I mean what can you ask more than that for 40 bucks?
Now I need to find me an Airport card :p

I think it is this one ....

Don't bother. These use a super rare and spendy Runway card to mount the AirPort/BT module. If it isn't there, it will cost you more than the PM to replace. Better to get a cheap PCie adapter for one of Apple's 2006/7 era AirPort cards.

Well 10 bucks is not that bad.. i mean yes it is 1/4th of what the Mac cost me, but it has bluetooth as well :D

That is just the module. Now google Runway card and gasp. You cannot mount the module without it.

Something like this

and one of these

I would suggest getting a Broadcom card over Atheros as BCM has better support under PPC, particularly if you want to run Tiger. This gives you native 802.11n AirPort WiFi. PowerMacs only ever shipped with 802.11g.

This is the elusive blue Runway card you need for the late 2005 PowerMacs with the grey WiFi/BT module mounted on it.

Last one I saw for sale wanted $100 for it.

In my opinion, this late 2005 model Dual Core G5 was one of the best PowerPC Macs ever built. I bought the DC 2.0 like this and cleaned it up, then upgraded it to 16GB RAM, replaced the CPU with a DC 2.3Ghz and a GeForce Quadro FX 4500 (512MB). If you're interested, I wrote up a thread about it here.

Even the base model had the GeForce 6600 LE card which has 1x Dual-link DVI port and 1x single link. Here's a copy of the specs from Mactracker;
Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE, GeForce 6600, GeForce 7800 GT, Quadro FX 4500
Graphics Memory 128 MB (6600 LE) or 256 MB (6600, 7800 GT) or 512 MB (Quadro FX 4500)
Display Connection 1 - DVI and 1 - dual-link DVI (6600 LE/6600/7800 GT) or 2 - dual-link DVI and 1 - stereo 3D port (Quadro FX 4500)

Being PCIe opens up many options for expansion.

It's a good score and you won't have to worry about liquid cooling leaks.

You are making it harder to wait.. he he, and it will é harder to be patient and dismant;e the thing to clean it up, but it will surely be worth!
