Thanks everyone as always, but the spending spree continued during the Week end :D

So I was able to get 1 iWork 09 still sealed and 1 iLife 09 sealed as well.... the excitement continues, the PowerMac G5 cannot arrive soon enought!!!

I am also about to get the full CS4 suite to go along, wich will make my system "complete".

During the Week end i replaced Leopard with Tiger on the MDD (wow talk about speed improvement!!!!) yes I had to renounce some software, but the speed gain and the Classic support (wich opens another huge section of software) made the switch definetly worthed.

So I will be keeping the MDD with Tiger and the G5 with Leopard (hopefully it runs Leopard even faster than the MDD runs Tiger).

Busy week end :D

Great idea. Use the MDD for Tiger + Classic/OS9 and the G5 for Leopard and you are getting the best out of it.

Leopard runs fast on the DC G5. Mix with the SSD for best results.

That's my plan!

Any lucky owner of a NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 128 for the MDD?? I am looking for one.. oh and some ram :p

Ok just an update (if anyone is interested), the G5 arrived and BOY oh BOY I am happy, it screams!!!!

I am very happy, the 5.5 gb ram probably helps a lot and I don't really feel the need for an SSD, even though I will definetly try to add it.

I have an OCZ Agility 3 that shows up on the desktop but not as boot device (it is in the upper slot.) I'll see if it works, otherwise I am still happy!!!! The G5 came very dirty but in great condition, a good clean will bring it as new, it even has the plastics inside the panel that protect it from scratching.... another awesome find and very lucky, this will become my main machine from today on!!!

Still have to find a wifi card for it, not so much for browsing but for mail and some minor file transfers. In the future will also look for a Quadro card, and possibly a CPU upgrade (woder what CPU is supported... may be the 2,3 dual core).

Anywhoo, if anyone has questions, feel free to ask, in the meantime, if you have a chance to get a G5.... well I would!

Congratulations on the score! You can definitely bump up the CPU to the Dual Core 2.3Ghz. I did this and it was just a straight swap out and then run the thermal calibration from the ASD disc. It made a substantial improvement as not only does the CPU speed increase by 15% (x2 cores) but also your system bus goes from 1.0Ghz to 1.15Ghz as the bus speed is managed by the CPU firmware.

There are reports of running 1x Dual Core 2.5Ghz CPU taken from the Quad systems with a removal of the LCS and installation of the heatsink from your original DC 2.0 unit, but I can't confirm this one. However, given that leaked LCS units would likely go for a song, this might be a more readily available option.

The SSD option will further improve general snappiness and boot/app launch times.

The Wifi/BT cards for the PCIe G5 can get expensive, I've seen them sell for quite a bit on eBay. I would recommend to use a compatible USB wifi dongle instead.

The Quadro FX 4500 is a mighty GPU for the G5 time period. There is nothing that it has not been able to handle smoothly on my G5 from PPC gaming to Core Image rendering and real time effects rendering in Motion and Final Cut Pro.

As with the G5, the Quadro card feels SOLID and delivers twin Dual-Link DVI outputs for running 2x 30" displays at full res if you're so inclined.

Well I might look into a 2.3 later on, first thing is definetly the Quadro, not that the 6600 is bad, but I am sure I can get more value from the card.

The 6600 oddly works with my 21:9 2560x1080, but the text is all blurry, i suspect it has to do more with OS X.5 than the card, so I am not counting that one to be solved by the quadro.

As for the ssd I don't know if is an issue with the Agility 3 (most likely) but for now I do not feel like investing in a new HD as it feels quite snappy as it is (who knows in the future).

So my upgrade path from here is

Quadro, then CPU , and later on SSD.

Thanks, the reality is the FX is only 45 bucks here... might look at the 6800 as well, thanks for sharing your benchmarks!

Not so bad at that price and it is satisfying to know you've got a monster card in there but it will really only bring benefits for specific pro software - you might be better off going for a gaming card? I wasn't keen on the extra fan noise from the 4500 either.

Enjoy your G5 :)

You know.. I always hear people compaining about G5 noise, in reality my MDD is WAAAAY noisier!

It depends on the condition of the G5...my 2.3 DP gets very loud unless it's set to Reduced power - there's a problem with a sensor. My old Quad however was whisper quiet under full load.

All the g5s I've had have been really quiet (as quiet as a Mac Pro) except one dual 2.5 which had a tendency to ramp its fans up, in comparison my G4 DA sounds like a jet plane

It says PCIe in the description and compatible with an early Mac Pro. Whether it is a Mac or PC card is not clear. It won't work on your G5 without flashing in any case.
Well thanks, it confuses me as well, the description is vague... as it also says compatible with all pcie devices...

For the price (I am sure it 'll get higher) I can risk , especially if it is a flashing thing (will have to learn how to.)

Will a flashed one work just as well as a "regular" card?

Thanks again!

There is a lot of useful information for flashing the Quadro FX 4500 for the PCIe G5 here:
https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-4500-for-power-mac-g5-compatibility.1991875/

It looks like the card you are watching falls into this category, so it should be possible.
ThankYou again, I just flashed the quadro, and what can I say....for 8 bucks I am a very happy camper, there is a little bit more noise but well worthed.

My card is running without the “extra” cable is that normal?

That’s great value! Well done getting it all together.

I would highly recommend connecting the power booster, even if it’s running okay without it. You’ll find it will either throttle itself or crash if you push the GPU as it will be starved of power.

You can buy the cables cheap on eBay;

Thanks for the tip, I bought the cable you suggested, better be safe, especially since the cost is silly.

Yesterday I tried a couple of things, nothing too heavy but still impressed, you can tell the difference from the 660 I had before (not sure if the difference was worth back then when the price was waaaay higer, but may be it was for the Pros back then).

All in all this little bugger of a G5 is more than I can ask for, coupled with CS 4 the thing just screams and runs on par with today's current model (with current software that is), so unless you really have to do Video or too much Internet, this machines offer a lot for the money.

Considering I spent around 100$ for a G5 with a Quadro, a 750 Mega Zip drive (i use to read older stuff i had) and a couple of softwares, I really cannot complain, and have a big smile on my face.

Yeah, and the older Power Macs/Mac Pros are so much more upgradeable that the new trashcans (And have better design). It's a shame that sites like youtube and facebook have become so unusable on older machines though.

I actually love the trashcan, my issue is with false progress... I mean I am perfectly able to do todays work with yesteryear computer, faster and in the same exact way, spending 100$ and having top of the line specs (back then) and performance on par with todays top of the line (not fooling myself talking about my workflow, again for video and 3d newer HW is WAY faster).

Most of the SW i use would not even be compatible with Intel, so I would not even be able to run said software for an actual comparison.

We call it progress, but to me (may be I am growing too old) apart from some power consumption improvement, it is hard to call it progress, almost 10 years passed and claims of 50% improvement have been the norm in the past years.....yet the 10 years old G5 can cope with todays work without sweating.

Now one can claim that current Photoshop / Illustrator can do things better because of some new tool but reality is you can still do the same thing on the older version, a little bit more work, but to me that's where the fun is.

I do some graphic and Site building and really I have been using the latest and greatest, untill I realized I can do the same for a fraction of the cost, while having fun doing it!
