Never will use it alone...I need something with a mouse and keyboard with proper software(excel, word)
IMO 64GB + 4G is a waste of money... Might as well get the air

I think it all depends on USAGE and distribution of USAGE % across different USAGE / FUNCTION areas.

It would help for both the 100% and not so 100% people to post what they are able to do using iPad alone and even those who cant do all by iPad and need a machine for a little bit more.

This is your second post in this thread trying to pimp an Android device in a iPad discussion.
You are acting like a Troll.

The Slate runs Windows 7, not Android.

I also have tried, and failed. The iPad is great, unfortunately its really only good for a media consumption device. I don't think the iPad is currently an effective replacement. I find trying type and entire paper on the iPad annoying, however it was easier once I bought a case/keyboard attachment. But I need more screen real estate and the ability to run many things at once, which the iPad just doesn't do well at. That being said, my iPad complements my Macs very nicely and I happy where it fits into my computer needs.

I have one of these... Works well for streaming hd movies 1080p and music seamlessly with no lag. All you need to do is drag and drop your files charge it and you ready to go! 500gb is more than enough for me. And seagate have a app called goflex media that works perfectly with the ipad, ipod touch, or iphones.

Either way, I don't think one can meaningfully compare a slate tablet with an ipad. They look similar, but are very different in terms of functionality.

From what I know, the slate is a full-blown laptop (just with a stand and bluetooth keyboard), which means it comes with all the limitations of one, including heavier weight and shorter battery life (2-3 hours?). Maybe windows 8 will change all these, but for now, I would sooner compare a slate with a MBA, rather than an ipad.

The whole point of the ipad is that even with a external keyboard (eg: zaggfolio), it can still offer unparalleled lightness and portability. :)

The Slate's battery is 7 hours and has an on screen keyboard w/ Swype capabilities & weighs 1.8 lbs but yeah I get your point. 1.8 lbs vs the new iPad 3's 1.43 lbs is pretty big difference.

It all depends on people's needs. 95% of my usage is now on an iPad but for that 5% there's no way I'm ready to give up my MacBook Pro just yet.

I tried it for a couple months because my computer died and I couldn't get it fixed right away. It worked, but there was some stuff I couldn't do and other stuff that was just difficult. It probably could replace a laptop since it does everything I need out of a portable device, but I would need an actual computer as well.

My iPad will never replace my MBP. I love my iPad but its definitely not a laptop replacement.

I use it a lot when we are on our travels. It was great in New York and Malta last year, we were booking restaurants each day and it was great to catch up with mail and other things. We could also plan our next days trips etc. Easy to carry around and get through airport security and not as heavy as a laptop.

But as the main computer. No it is not really suitable and the screen is too small for long term use.

It's almost there for me. I rarely use my MacBook anymore. Mostly it's just to archive videos that I've taken on my iPhone, or to move photos into folders. And all of that is just because of limited storage in my iDevices. For the most part, my iPad is my computer now. The same goes for my Dad, who inherited my iPad 2.

We have thought about this route too but it's tough. What we are gonna do is sell the MBA and replace with a Mac mini and run splashtop from both our iPads. We already have Bluetooth keyboard so I think it will work fine. We literally use the MBA once a month?

In terms of extra storage it is possible to use an external USB stick or hard drive if you use a mains powered USB hub. You can store your photos and videos currently on your computer on the USB stick formatted like a digital camera (in a DCIM folder) and then have access to them :D

But could I move photos and videos FROM my iPhone TO that drive without a computer? That's what I'm using my MacBook for now.

I pads might be the future for people who never needed a computer in the first place...

Oh don't start with that. The iPad appeals to a market that previously only had the option of using a computer. The iPhone may technically have similar capabilities, but screen size makes a big difference (no pun intended) for stuff like web browsing, videos, and digital magazines.

Depends what you use your laptop for. Mostly surfing, email, & Netflix. Yeah, the iPad makes these things fun. Writing reports or doing a lot of spreadsheet work? Not so much.

external keyboard + incase origami + ipad = fun. i write on my ipad for most of my work. it is quite nice, especially once you remember a few of the keyboard commands (making a mouse or tapping the screen unnecessary). spreadsheets? not so fun. this is when the lack of a mouse becomes annoying and i wish i was an android.

Jobs was right, eventually the desktop Mac/PC will occupy the same position the pick-up truck does — there will be a small group who will always need one, but the mainstream will have moved on.

The iPad/MacBook Air are the future of computers, but the current models are just a stepping stone to that future. They're not the finished article.

If they could iCloudify the Photos app and let me fully manage my photos and home videos on iOS then everything would be cool and I could go 100% iPad/iPhone. But...I say "could" cause even then I probably won't cause I just like using macs and os x too much to just stop.

Last year I went to China for many months and though it seems fun in theory, I would not have been able to live off an iPad for that long. My MBP still has reason to exist. I have a 500GB HD which comes in handy. As a college student living on campus I admittedly use my iPad exclusively for the most part, as do many other student I see walking about...but my MBP is always in my dorm for those few tasks, such as typing a long essay...or for some serious video editing. But all in all, as another member posted above, the iPad is used 95% of my time.

Hey, I use a private photostrem on Flickr to Move my photos easily around devices. You could also use Vimeo for videos? Flickr works well anyway! ;)
