"iPad only" - don't you see how illogical your post is?

I went iPad only...there are a lot of accessories you need to buy, keyboard, cases, stylus, ect., but it's totally worth it in the long run. iPads are the future :)

It's funny and ironical that a poster can write like he is doing. With all the accessories (etc.!) that YOU NEED TO BUY (!) according to him, you have by long gone left the whole crazy concept of "iPad alone" [to replace a laptop/computer].

And the funny thing is that I really don't think he even comes close to even realize it himself. When other posters have tried to tell him, he is just in his own mode of self-defence without being able to reflect about the facts about necessary accessaries that he indeed have written himself.

My desktop will never be replaced. The iPad has taken the place of my MBP though... so I might end up selling it. But I admit that the iPad has a lot of growing to do.

So, you probably have not gone iPad only...I know I'm right. I have, I right now have no computer that I have 24/7 access to. However, for school and such there is no way the on screen keyboard can satisfy. Therefore, it is much easier to type with the Bluetooth keyboard. Maybe you don't NEED it, but it's just one of those things that make the experience better. There really was no need to be a jerk about it, I was just trying to help anyone that is thinking about replacing their computer with the iPad.

I've replaced the majority of what I used my MacBookPro for except for Aperture. I have faith in Apple to come up with a powerful companion app when Aperture 4 is released but if I'm proven wrong, I'll migrate to Ligthroom where Adobe has already made the iPad an ideal photographer's tool.

Sorry, and I agree with this post

Sorry, and I agree with you when I understand that you mean that it's much better to type longer texts on an external BT keyboard.

This morning I had a meeting that I didn't think I'd need to lug my MacBookPro to but I wanted to have the ability to take notes and maybe look up some information during the meeting. Usually, I would bring a pad and paper and do any light information checking on my iPhone.

This time, I grabbed my iPad and a Targus stylus. This was the ideal meeting assistant. I felt more engaged with the attendees by not hiding behind a laptop screen and was able to write out cues on the Paper app during a conference call that I was turning to show the speaker.

I'm feeling more than ever that this will be my last MacBookPro. I'll be getting a next generation iMac whenever it's released (hopefully this summer) for video and photo editing and will use the iPad for everything else.

On another note, I'm still finding difficulty using an iPad for forums. MacRumors doesn't have an app and while I'm aware of forum apps, some of the forums I visit aren't supported. What do those of you going iPad exclusive use?

I used an iPad only 5 months - sold my macbook pro as I was abroad for 2 months and waiting for the new MacBook air at the time.

I missed the power, keyboard, mutlitasking and full screen of a laptop. I also missed the certaintly of the laptop - i didnt trust the ipad on certain tasks in the browser.

Sometime you want a full keyboard and the traditional setup.

The iPad is superb as a complimentary device but I don't see an iPad only situation for me anytime soon.

I find the browser more than capable of navigating forums. Especially in landscape. I use way less apps on my iPad than I did on my iPhone simply because I find the real sites easier and easier to use from the browser.

Love the IPad but it will not replace a desktop or laptop yet, remote into my pc's is cool, and I would like to see apps built for SAP to do more with it, but that is down the road.

My MacBook pro as been off for several days now... I don't use a computer for work, just to surf the web download shows on iTunes, upload pics from camera, listen to music, email's, I can do all that on the iPad eyes close... but sometimes I just like to use the Mac because its faster.

I've typed up two page essays in und half an hour and feel great about it. Mainly, being on campus all day with the ten hour battery life and I can rest easy. I just love it. I do alternate to my MacBook pro every few days but that's only cause I miss it.

Almost there, but not quite yet. I need the following:

1) a full MS-compatible word processor and spreadsheet app
2) ability to render Flash websites with no issues (some sites on Photon or other such browsers still choke)
3) touch version of Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop. I know there's an iOS Photoshop, but it's not sufficiently featured yet.
4) ability to upload files via a web browser easily
.

There is a fix for number 4 on Cydia. Get Safari Upload Enabler it's awesome.

I'm away from home for about 2 weeks, with only my iPad and iPhone.. Only thing I miss is being able to download and watch shows.. But other than that I love it.. 99% of what I want to do I can (which isn't very much FYI)

Well that's possible if you got a good internet connection and some patience... icloud should let us stream instead of downloading.

The thing doesn't even have a filesystem! It fundamentally can't replace a real computer.
Don't be silly of course it has a file system or it would not work.
The file system just doesn't work like on a traditional computer.
To be honest most people asking for a file system are really just looking for a folder structure to put their files in and that can be called upon from any app.
90% of people have no need to go beyond that part of a file system because there is no need to go further.

iOS just does it a little different in as to sandbox each app with it's own folder to keep the files for that particular app and not system wide.

If apple would give iOS a folder where you could dump all your pics, docs, pdf and such, where all apps could pull from everybody would say that we finally have a file system.

Agreed. And my question is WHY don't they just do this? I don't buy the security rationale. There must be some way of maintaining adequate security measures while still allowing common access to a single folder. Maybe they could leave apps sandboxed by default, but allow us the option to unsandbox certain apps to allow for greater flexibility.

So for a device to be considered a "real computer" it has to have a file system? Sorry, but I don't agree. As I've mentioned in other threads, I can - and do - quite easily work with an iPad and nothing else. I can VPN into work, admin servers, write documentation, and create diagrams, my normal day-to-day stuff. Those are the same tasks that I did on a laptop. So what's the difference? For me, there isn't one, and the lack of a visible filesystem doesn't make an iPad any less of a computer. Yes, it would be easier if there was a method for apps to access other apps' documents, but the current set-up is by no means unusable....

I don't get why this is such a - for want of a better word - controversial topic. I'm not saying that going iPad-only would work for everyone, it wouldn't, but for some people neither would going Air-only.

It won't even replace a computer for my grandmother. I'm not being sarcastic, she needs to download files, edit them and re-upload.

Super. Believe it or not, there are billions of people in the world besides your grandmother. My mother uses an iPad as her only computer. It replaced a desktop. That one fact disproves your statement that "It fundamentally can't replace a real computer."
