Although I'm using my iPad 80% of the time versus 20% for the PC. However that 20% is critical. The iPad is too much of a consumption device in a walled garden for it to satisfy the small but critical 20% that it currently can't serve. That includes torrents, accepting memory cards, storing large amounts of music, video and data, creation in photoshop and outright quick productivity.

I love my iPad and can't live without it but it's still a pre-mature PC.

Never will use it alone...I need something with a mouse and keyboard with proper software(excel, word)
IMO 64GB + 4G is a waste of money... Might as well get the air

IMO the 64GB Wi-Fi/4G isn't a waste even though I own a MacBook Air and a Mac Mini. The MacBook Air is larger, heavier, the battery lasts a much shorter time and it doesn't have instant on.

I find that even owning an Air and a Mini I spend most of my time at home using the iPad. Most of my usage is consumption based rather then production based so I don't really have any major issues using an iPad. It's not perfect or 100% practical by any means but for the most part fulfills my needs very well. Not having Flash can be a problem but having owned every single iPad and iPhone model over the years I've got use to it and learnt to live without it. With HTML5 becoming more and more popular it's not as big an issue.

Ever since I got my original iPad back in 2010 I've always taken an iPad on my vacation trips and never taken the Air. The iPad is so much more practical and easier to use. Everything I've need to do on vacation, check email, browse the Internet, search for information, make bookings, use Skype has been just fine on the iPad.

My Air hardly gets used by me and my Parents now use it for Skype at home. On the occasions I need a proper computer at home I use my Mini.

Depends what you use your laptop for. Mostly surfing, email, & Netflix. Yeah, the iPad makes these things fun. Writing reports or doing a lot of spreadsheet work? Not so much.

Agreed. I think the iPad best seves as an Internet device and much less as a real computer replacement. I wish it could just do a little more and it might be able to replace my laptop but not till MS steps up and gives us Office.

For someone who just goes on the Internet, it is a "real computer replacement".

And like I said, you never needed a real computer is you do nothing but the Internet. The iPhone or a cheap lap/net book would do that.:p

And as I have said, screen size makes a big difference. Web pages are a lot easier to view on a 9.7" than a 3.5".

Uh, laptops and netbooks ARE computers. Which of course brings me back to my other point: before the iPad the only option that fit the parameters (mobile device with larger display) was a computer!

iPad will do most things people do mot of the time, but not everything. Most people aren't used to typing long times on a touchscreen. Plus we're too used to doing things a certain ways on a conventional computer.

I pads might be the future for people who never needed a computer in the first place but it will be a long time before a iPad will replace my office and home desktops. Even my laptop is safe for a long time unless Apple loosens it stranglehold on the iPad.

A "keyboard, case, stylus etc" is still not going to get the iPad to run Quickbooks Pro, AutoCad, MS Office, etc. might be fine for a kid who biggest worry is where his next sack of pot is coming from but it could not get the real work that I need to do on a daily basis. :p

You really didn't need to be a jerk about it :p All I said was my iPad replaced my computer, and if you have a problem with that then you sir need help. :)

The solution is not just getting used to...

iPad will do most things people do mot of the time, but not everything. Most people aren't used to typing long times on a touchscreen. Plus we're too used to doing things a certain ways on a conventional computer.

Without a proper hardware keyboard, a sole touch screen (iPAD) can NEVER be as convenient and good to use for text input (for instance). So, I am afraid the poster misses the point if he actually believes that this is a question of people needing time to getting used to..... Using a virtual keyboard (that also takes a lot of real estate away from the screen) can never be as good as having a real keyboard. And this is not a matter of being used to do things (writing) in certain ways on a conventional computer, and that that will change.

Gosh the notion of only using a iPad as my only computer is very apealing unfortunatly I have never been able to do it. It's missing to many things, the big one for me is a file manager. Though with Jail Break I can now use the terminal to delete, copy and move files so it's a start.

I don't think anyone want's to hear this but the only tablet that I was able to use as a computer replacement is a Asus Slider. I know Android is a sour subject on a Apple forum but I'm trully able to do all of my work on it. I'm a programmer for a large bank in Switzerland. I have my entire development studio on my Asus Studio. I use Python, PHP, Java and C++. I can actually run Eclipse and Netbeans on my Asus Slider. I can also mount all of my servers, home and work very simply.

Now these are things that only appeal to a few people like myself but I really think Apple needs to release a pro version tablet OS. iOS I'm sorry to say is not a very good tablet OS. Great phone OS but it's missing to many things that I need to replace a computer as of now. Yes I fully understand Apple has sold millions of these things and what do I know. It's just a wish and it probably won't happen, it doesn't really matter anyway as I'm actually very happy using Android 4.04 for work on my Asus Slider and my iPad for home surfing and entertainment.

Oh and hello everyone it's my first post. Nice to be here.:)

How'd you setup Eclipse on your Android OS? Have any links for how to set this up?

You need to have a rooted machine and then install a program called "LinuxInstaller". I perfer the Debian distribution but you can can also use Ubuntu. Make sure to assign at least 2GB for the drive. After the installation is installed simply follow the instructions then type "apt-get install eclipse" in a terminal of your choice and this will install Java as well as Eclipse.

Interesting. I can't imagine using it on a regular basis but it's nice to have it as a fall-back. Then again, something like Splashtop can be used avoiding the complication of installing another OS.

Well you can go down the route but I thought this thread was about using a tablet as your only machine. The LinuxInstaller program just installes the Linux distro in a blob is you will. This allows you to run pretty much every Linux app directly in the Android enviroment. Just a note the apps you use have to be ARM compatible as this isn't a emulater your actually running the program in real time. Its pretty good to, very quick. You can even do a dual boot thing where you can either boot into Android or a full Debian, Ubuntu or Arch Linux Desktop, very cool.

What? iPad Only?

No way! Not even close...

For some? Whatever floats your boat.

For me? I thoroughly enjoy mine as a fun alternative web browsing device.

No more, no less :D

Agree with this 100%. The iPad is a brilliant consumption device, but when it comes to content creation, it is way too limited. I work with PowerPoint and Excel a lot. There is just not enough computing power for complex spreadsheets, and manipulating graphics with the touch screen is very tedious and hard to do serious work.

Agreed, this is a good summary for me too.

I'm sure some other people must have tried or is trying to go iPad only(no main computer, just iPad). I know I could go iPad only if the storage wasn't an issue. I've been trying to find a way to add external storage without any success. Has anyone here successfully gone iPad only?

I tried going iPad only. People said I shouldn't. I did anyways.

It wasn't good.

No I think your ego NEEDS to list it!

It is a pitiful little list anyway!:p

Well, I don't live in my moms basement and have her buy me everything....I also have a truck payment, insurance, oh...have you seen gas prices? I'm proud that I work enough to buy everything I have, so yes I don't NEED to show it off but I do.

Fortunately, America isn't the only country in the world where freedom of speech is a basic human right

Lol true :)

Not trying to be a jerk, but just simply asking; why didn't you like going iPad only?

I'm sure this was said above, but just reiterating:

Use a wireless external HDD solution like Seagate GoFlex for the space that you need.
