For clarification I don't know if he's with AT&T, I know I mentioned them, but I was just using them as an example.

I'm curious on this.

The OP clearly states that his 3G signal is not good at all where he lives. Then he goes on to say that its the iPhone 4S fault for not giving him an option to turn off 3G and then sarcastically states "it just works" to insinuate that his iPhone 4S does not.

What confuses me, is the original problem seems to be his weak signal. Has the OP contacted his carrier and complained that "it doesn't work"?

Seems to me he's taking out his frustrations from having poor carrier signal and blaming the phone for it.

hes not complaining about the signal, hes complaining about the option to turn off 3g. read it again.

got the new 4s on friday and without a 3g off switch its useless to me.
At home i have 1 bar of 3g which is enough to hold the phone on 3g but it wont make or take calls."It just works" me arse.
Will give it a untill xmas and if apple have not released an update or if the jailbreak isnt out ill move to android.

very dissapointed

Don't just tell us. Tell Apple:
www.apple.com/feedback/

Tim Cook has also continued the tradition of occasionally replying to e-mails. Let him know, as well. I'm sure he's getting bombarded with battery-related messages, but if they get enough complaints about the toggle, they'll put it back.

Emailed cook yesterday,no reply.Im living in ireland no microcells,no at&t ......no ******* all.Meteor is the name of the carrier here.We do have 5 bars of 2g service in >80% of the country though so thats why its annoying when you see your phone saying no service.

Have you called Meteor and told them how your coverage is? I doubt emailing Cook is going to solve anything....

Yeah as i said meteor have 5 bars of 2gand full 3g in the cities ,i dont think an email from me is going to get the to put up new 3g masts outside my door.

That was not what i ment. I think it is worth a try to call Meteor and talk to them. The more complaints about coverage in your area, the more a chance of some solution...

But hey, good lucky..

You're right. It's not. You'd have better luck contacting your provider, not the phone manufacturer if you wanted to have better coverage in your area.

I hate this feature too. I used Edge a lot in certain parts on NY (Williamsburg/Brooklyn), because the Edge network works a lot better than 3G for some reason.

Now, with my 4S, I am stuck on 3G with very low signal strength, that I get failed calls all the time, and the battery gets drained even faster. I liked being able to put on Edge, because I would go from 1-2 bars on 3G, to 5 bars on Edge, and my battery would not suffer.

Even when service strength isn't an issue, I would put my phone on Edge just to conserve battery when it was running low... again, I can no longer do this.

I think it was a disaster to remove that feature. What I want to know is if everyone who hates this "new" issue, just comes on here to write about it, but doesn't send apple any feedback about it? There are viable reasons to put it back... and I really think Apple should.

OP this is a terrible thing that Apple has done. I simply cannot believe they would put this much work into a phone over time and then senselessly rip a well known and widely used feature from our hands. I feel as though I had a newborn baby ripped from my hands, I am truly gutted. Times like this make me wonder why I even bother. I don't want to alarm anyone but not being able to switch off 3G service has made me feel like doomsday is approaching, quickly. I feel as though this is just one more step towards total annihilation and I cannot seem to shake the feeling. Do you ever get that feeling? It is this battle that lives within me. I have to make a call and I know 3G isn't great in my area but I cannot make it nor can I dictate on a phone that I own outright how I will make the call. It doesn't matter where I am, the control is being ripped from me. The ability to choose is being ripped from me. FFS, I'd have an easier time selling my soul to the devil than I would turning off 3G. Why did they take this away from us? Why did I upgrade my device? Why is it that I am being stuck with this phone that is not a POS, per se, but it is more like another window looking into the future showing me that Apple will continue to take control from me one feature at a time. Why is turning off 3G a feature? Why isn't it just how it is? Why is it something that Apple just decided needed to go? Why does it even matter to them? How in the world did this affect them and the carriers who support the iPhone? Does it even? There are so many questions that are running through my head. I call around to various carriers, I ask Apple and still, no answers. No glimmer of hope that we may some day understand. No evidence that we can turn this feature on and off. No way of telling if I will have to jailbreak my phone to get this lousy feature back. I don't want to jailbreak. Sure, it's a whole new world and it was awesome when I did it but in the end why would I have to hack a phone just for a couple of "features" that Apple decided to do away with? Is Apple looking out for us? I don't know, I can't tell. I feel lost and alone. I feel like you made the best decision possible and if someone doesn't understand why you would come here and tell people what decision you make then F them. F them up the butt hole because you have a right. A right to blog, a right to tweet, a right to update your facebook status, and a right to make a video rant about it and post it on YouTube. You have a right and people have a right to support you. Let people support you, let them hold your hands and keep you calm. Godspeed Gearoidol, Godspeed.

Y You Mad?

I guess I am alone in saying I haven't had any problems with the phone itself. Service for me, has actually been better. The only complaint I have is with iOS5 constantly crashing apps. Sorry about your luck OP.

Not alone at all. This thing has been a rock for me. Working perfectly.

If I remember correctly, the 3G toggle was removed in one of the last beta builds of ios 5 (or possibly the GM). This is not specific to the iPhone 4s, it is an ios 5 "feature". From what I remember, I lost the toggle on my old 3gs as well when that build was pushed out.

It is shame they removed the 3G toggle switch to cater to the CDMA iPhones.

I always had it off along with Edge if I wasn't using them. And yes, it helped my battery life. I guess this is why even the original iPhone had better battery life than the iPhone 3G back in the 3.0 days. The iPhone 2G had no 3G chip which meant it wouldn't be searching for a 3G signal in the background like the iPhone 3G/3Gs did. They added the toggle switch in 4.0, but a shame they took it out for GSM users in 5.0.

Only answer to getting the toggle switch back is to jailbreak and use SBSettings.

Not sure about that as I definitely still have the 3G toggle on my Iphone 4 running ios5.

It's not an iOS 5 issue. The iPhone 4 can have the option to turn off 3G but that is a carrier option. What you probably saw was that the early betas ignored the carrier option when it should not have. But the option for carriers to disable turning off 3G existed before iOS 5.

However, on the 4S it is NEVER present. Some have speculated that the radio can not selectively shut off just 3G. Whether there is a workaround that Apple can do via software, I don't know.

This is what Apple is states:

Note: Depending on your model of iPhone you have you may note the following:

iPhone 4S: The option to enable or disable 3G is no longer available.
iPhone 4 and earlier: The option to enable 3G may not appear in Network settings, depending on your carrier.

I'm wondering if the visibility of that toggle may be something the cell companies have control over now then.... I remember seeing a post with a number of people complaining about the 3G toggle vanishing close to the end of the beta versions. I know my 3gs had it vanish. I'm on AT&T here.

And there it is. I stand corrected. Thank you. Maybe carriers weren't exercising their ability to restrict that as much prior to ios 5 (which made it look alot like an ios 5 related change).

I also wonder why they removed the 3G toggle. I would have preferred that they left it in there. (It's not really doing any harm). Sometimes AT&T's network only works on 2G in some areas, but the phone will try to connect to the nonexistant 3G network.

It's a real gripe for people without wifi at home. What would those people do other than hope AT&T gives them a free microcell?

I'm guessing sarcasm and humor escape you on a daily basis?
