that isn't true - no one actually does graphic designing on the go. they do it at work or at their office at home with a monitor. it's preference. i prefer smaller a screen on the go!

I have and will continue to do so. Sure, I won't be doing any color correction for your next feature-length film, For some reason, a calibrated screen on location at a shoot will make a client giggle.

I went through college with a 12" powerbook w/ external until my final year when I got a 2.0 15" MBP and I went to school for design. My suggestion is 13" MB/MBA or a 15" MBP and use the cash you save to spruce it up and get an external for your dorm/room (maybe a dell mini on the side running OS X for the times you don't wanna carry a real notebook around).

I've already got an external monitor for it that I would normally sell to pay for the MB, but it's technically sort of owned by Dad's university, so I can't. It's only a 19" Dell but it's 1680x1050 and it works fine. I also have an aluminum keyboard and Logitech MX Revolution.

I have a 300GB external HDD I can use as well for backups....

I went through middle school with various laptops, and strange as it may seem, I brought them to school all the time. I had a 1GHz 17" PB for about a week, and brought it to school for that week. I really did like the form factor. Just big enough to fit on my individual desk, and not cramped screen-wise at all.

One big pro to a big screen is that if two people are collaborating on something, it's a hell of a lot easier to both be able to see on a 17" than on a 12".

Anyway, I am going to read up on the 15" model. If it does have really good battery life, I may consider it. We'll see.

It also happens to be $1000 cheaper.

you wont get anything close to 8 hours of battery life with the new 17" MBP even after i recalibrated the battery i only get 4 1/2 to 5 hours if im lucky. the 15" prob wont get anything close to what it says either. but something to keep in mind because on the 15 u can always bring a extra battery, you cant with the 17 it is not easy to remove.

Some of us are actually able to leave town during projects because we can work in the car and at our destinations. I primarily travel by motorcycle and I can take my work and ride up in the mountains and do work when I feel like getting out of the city.

IM, if you get the 15, get the middle one as it has double the bottom's L2 cache.

Well.... I read if it's just light Web browsing and typing it's like 6 or 7. I don't usually watch YouTube or anything while on battery.

Maybe he is a she?? Independent WOman!?!

Or it could be a 18 year old kid that just got a job and moved out on his own to stay up past his bedtime...

He isn't a she.

As for the second part, I wish. Only fifteen. Went to bed at 10:00 last night :(

id say just go for it man :)
my way of thinking of it is, if your going to spend THAT much on a laptop anyways, you may as well get the 17" cause your not gunna have that kinda money again for a long time... thats how i kinda ended up getting a pro over a mb.

So work your ass off, sell all you can, and enjoy the beasty power and awesome screen :D
Whilst i sit there jealous :p

Ehhh... a lot of it, honestly, is I want to be able to have the same laptop as my dad....

But yeah, I'm gonna get the 15 or the 17.

If you put it that way, why not go one step further? If your going to drop 3k for a 17" mbp, why not just go a little further and drop $250 bucks more and get a 2.26GHz Mac Pro beast of a desktop.

Because that's what I have now.

I need a laptop.

You said you didn't game (in another thread) so the 2,4GHz 15'' or the 2,66GHz 17'' seems like good choices. You don't really need power, screen dimension is more important for you, I believe.

You will WISH to be able to go to bed at this time when you'll be in college during rushes.

Exactly.

I've got a 3870X2 on the Hac Pro so my screensaver is the iTunes visualizer. ;)

haha, you must not have a wife or gf.

A wife is a surefire way to kill your gadget buying ways. I am amending what I said to the OP then. In addition to getting the top of the line MBP, stay single for as long as possible. If you are dating someone who questions you blowing your money on something move on...it will never work.

Well, good news is I showed her the Hac Pro and she liked the pretty blue lights. ;)

I would like a last gen 15 inch because I do not like glossy screens
Glossy screens aren't as horrible as some posters make them out to be. I've used one for over three years and not had a single issue with it.

In your case, iMpathetic, I'd probably go for the 15" MBP, but if you're basically using it as a desktop replacement I can see why you'd want the 17" model.

I think if you want a 17" MBP, and you are willing to work for it yourself, then definitely go for it.

However, if you just need portability between your mom's house and your dad's house, you could even go with a Mac mini. Providing you have displays at both houses. Then you could keep all your files and everything on one Mac. Really, it doesn't seem like you want to do anything intensive... you just need a computer at both your mom and dad's houses. For $599, you can buy a Mac mini that really is nice. Then throw in four gigs of RAM, and a big hdd, and you're set.

But, if you really want a MBP, and you plan to start saving now, then maybe you will change your mind between now and the end of summer. Also, maybe you will find that something else will work better for you. Or maybe you will want it sooner, and will be willing to go with a prior generation for around a grand instead of a brand new model.

If you do buy the big brand new 17" MBP, you will have a solid investment that would probably last three to five good years. Especially with the ability to throw 8 GB of RAM down the road when it costs less. The ability to add a fast SSD in a few years, should keep it going fast. Snow Leopard should be out by the end of Summer. It would be a great goal to work forward to. A lesson learned that will last you a lifetime. Something earned is very sweet and educational.

Best wishes.

Thank you for your post. :)

I actually had my Hackintosh at mom's house hooked up to a display and everything, and it wasn't fun at all. A desktop there is just out of the question.

It did occur to me, though, that I do already have this perfectly good Hackintosh now, and that I might want to consider keeping it, I really do like it. If I were to keep it, I'd get a blackbook instead. I had a 2.2GHz blackbook once and loved it.

I really do love the feeling of plunking down cash to buy a product that you've saved for.

In any case, I've narrowed my choices to a black MacBook and keeping the computer, a 15" unibody, and a 17" unibody.

I love glossy screens. The MacBook I had was great, as is the POS Toshiba laptop I have and the VAIO.

I probably won't TAKE it places very much, but my ideal computing position is sprawled out in my room on the bed. I hate dragging my power adapter everywhere.

I think you should go for the 15" MBP. Same power as the 17" just shorter battery, still a really nice machine to work on and will last you years.

Anyone want to chime in on how long this thing gets?

Also, can't certain 15" models 8GB capable?

From some one like you who has gone through literally hundreds of machine the few machines that I have kept for a while have always been 17" powerbooks, macbook pros. I currently have all 3 unibodys and am in the process of getting rid of the 13". I find it a compromise to use, the 15 is ok but battery life is poor.

Just go for the 17" would not waste my time with the 15", I do not need the power, buy upgraded my processor as it is the one thing I can not change latter on down the line.

Now the 17" is a different story completely. I simply love it, prefect size I am always on the web or writing documents and having two windows open side by side is a life send.

My wife now loves the 17" for battery life also, so I am passing on my 17" standard build on to her and have ordered a CTO 2.93, 7200 rpm version for me. I plan to upgrade ram at a later date when prices come down and get a SSD drive then. I intend to keep this machine fir at least a year minimum.

Do I do anything taxing that requires a macbook pro, no, I just simply like the design and form. I get approx. 6-7 hrs battery life browsing the web, listening to itunes, emailing, watching the odd film. I travel extensively for my job so I take it with me perfect for traveling when waiting around at airports and flights to and fro from europe on a single charge.
