In the über-conservative enclave of Baton Rouge, the Hummer is still the status SUV and the clogged roads are crawling with them. I hope that $5/gallon fixes this problem since $4/gallon hasn't made a dent (probably because so many people work for oil companies here).

Please do not inject politics into threads not located in the PRSI forum. You've already gotten the Best "Fail" pics thread shutdown:(:(

To reiterate, Hummer is not being killed, it is being sold most likely to Tata or another Indian or Chinese firm. The only brands that might be killed is GMC or Pontiac(if it does get killed, hope the G8 returns as an Impala :) ).

If I see 10 people climb out of a Suburban, I'd change my mind. Living in a soccer mom kind of town, I seldom see these behemoths and their liking with more than one to three passengers.

I thought the G6 & G8 were doing well? In my opinion, icing that div. would be sad but I also thought the same thing about Oldsmobile's demise.

Wouldn't mind it. I've yet to like any Pontiac and I certainly don't like Hummers. Cheap version of a HUMV.

Well it is a shame you want to screw everyone that does need one.

Anyway, the G8 is doing pretty well( according to my local dealer, people are gobbling up the GT's surprisingly). But, the G6 is mostly propped up by fleet sales, though retail isn't that bad I think.

Pontiac and Olds have a special place in my heart. Growing up in the 60's and 70's they were awesome cars.

The bigguns' may cause their own demise. I'm sure those who don't really need them will pass with present fuel situation. Those that do, and I have a Pilot, may have way fewer choices in a few years. GM's lineup is very redundant which has always been an Achilles heal.

In the November 2007 issue of Fast Company, Johnathan Goodwin had modified a Hummer H1 to get 60 mpg. ("Motorhead Messiah" article)

The base, unmodified, Hummer H3 already gets decent mpg....about 19 mpg in actual city driving.

I think the H1 looks cool. The H3 feels "cheap" but I still kind of like it.

The H2 is on a modified 2500 HD Suburban frame, FYI.

Regardless they get the same crappy fuel economy as most other full size SUVs. I hate seeing people complain about the poor fuel economy of hummers but over look the much more prevalent SUVs- suburbans, tahoes, yukons, esclades, land cruisers, etc. Another thing that bothers me is that no one looks at the fuel economy of minivans. My neighbor has a Toyota sienna and they say it averages 20mpg!

I don't think big SUV's are a bad thing. Growing up my family has owned many. When you have 2 small kids and vacation a lot they're great. Or for moving things from place to place. My dad had 3 suburbans and they were great. Going places my sister and I would each have our own row of seating. You could fit a full size piece of sheetrock or plywood in the back if you wanted too. My parents one time drove all the way to NY to pickup two church pews for our house (decorative furniture). My dad actually managed to fit things like a roto tiller and snow blower in them. This was back when gas was cheap though.

My family still owns SUVs, we have 5 cars and 4 of them are SUVs. Space is not just a benefit, but the security in the winter. There are lots of narrow, steep, roads around here and the town's plowing resources aren't that great. Additionally, we live on a private road which is usually plowed last. Driving in a non 4wd car isn't always the safest mode of transportation and sometimes just is not feasible at all. Our 1 sedan has difficulty getting up our driveway let alone roads around us. Both my parents hold jobs where they cannot just decide not to work because it's snowing. Yes, there are awd sedans out there but their gas milage isn't always that great. Take for instance the G35x- my cousin has one and gets 19mpg average. Our Touareg gets 17-18mpg average...

I suppose my biggest point here is that SUV's do hold functionality, and more importantly there are cars that gets bad gas mileage out there that are overlooked by far less popular models, and no one seems to care.

People who drive Hummers are kind of like people who drive BMWs. They think they are better than you and can do whatever they please on the road.

Personally I don't care if the brand is killed off. I can only see good coming from it.

You mean Mac users?

Just kidding ;) But, people say similar things about Mac users, so let's not start profiling...

Quite true, haha. I should have been more clear in saying that people think that Mac users are "better than" PC users, similar to the BMW driver statement. That old thing.

I would never classify Mac users and Hummer drivers in the same category. Sorry for the mix-up! :)

This thread has ridiculous commentary.

First I just want to say, those nickel-hydride batteries for electric cars… where do you think they get all that nickel? Answer: from the largest source of air pollution in North America, a nickel mine in Sudbury, Ontario. And it's not CO2 that mine ejects, its sulphur dioxide.

Propaganda much?

For the good of all: EVERY V8 TRUCK GETS 15mpg!!!
Don't bag on Hummer for something every truck is!!!

This doesn't make the Hummer OK. Or any of those trucks for that matter.

It's only ok if he will use that Alpha off road. The H3 is a decent off roader.

That's one of the sticklers with the whole SUV death scenario. There are some who actually use theirs for what they were designed for that will lose out if they all go by the wayside. I used to do quite a bit of off-roading and camping and the SUV was awesome. But that was pre-SUV days as in Jeep Wagoneer and IH Scout era.

i cant see a prettied up hummer doing it either.....:apple:

hummers arent like there humvee cousin, there not really even made to be used for offroading.

The H2 might suck, but the H3 is pretty decent like I said. True, it isn't H1 capable, but it isn't a joke.

isnt the H3 just a baby version of the h2?

They are on totally different platforms though. Like I said earlier, the H2 is on a modified GMT-800 2500 HD Suburban frame( the H2 will off road better then the Tahoe/Suburban, but it is still a joke). The H3 is based off a modified GMT-355 platform which underpins the Colorado/Canyon. The GMT-355 is a much more capable platform for off roading then the GMT-800 platform( though there is the new GMT-900 platform now which underpins the 2007+ full size trucks and SUV's).

I dont know how they can kill the H2 and continue the brand. the H3 hasn't been around that long so when people think Hummer, they think of the H2.

I hope they kill off civilian Hummers. I'd be more for them if they had better MPG but they're just an absolute waste.

keep in mind, HUMMER brand trucks dont have anything to do with military humvees anymore, which is what you're probably thinking of.
the H2 is a glorified heavy duty version of the Chevy Tahoe.

the problem with the H3 is that it failed its raison d'etre. it was supposed to be a cool hummer that got significantly better mileage than the H2 and it didn't. it was serverely underpowered until the gave it a V8 option (which further lowered the mileage) and now its for all intensive purposes, a tiny H2. so in that regard yes, it is a baby H2.

and the H2, somehow, has a crampt interior. the vehicle is humongous, but the interior is small. it kinda defies the laws of physics.
