The VLC developers are rethinking this issue now.
I hope VLC will come back to App Store. VLC is great.

The VLC developers pulled the app from the app store due to the enforced encryption added by apple for distribution I believe. It is up to he developer if they accept the terms or not.

720p mkv tv out

Hi.. Is there a timeline of when we think goodplayer will play 720 mkv, including tv out, smoothly on iPhone 4s or iPad 2?

Thx

The next 4.0 version will have a 15%-20% mkv/h.264 playback performance improvement. Please give 4.0 a try when it is on app store. Now the GoodPlayer 4.0 version is still in review.
So for the 4.0 version, the 720p playback is much better.

Hi.. Is there a timeline of when we think goodplayer will play 720 mkv, including tv out, smoothly on iPhone 4s or iPad 2?

How well does GoodPlayer handle 960x540p MKV files with soft subtitles? I have a huge selection of Blu-Rays that I want to encode to that resolution (basically half the resolution of 1080p). I have both an iPhone 4 and iPad 2. Will GoodPlayer play the files perfectly?

For 960x540p, iPad 2 is okay. However iPhone 4 will be unable to play it smoothly, even with the 4.0 performance improvement.

GoodPlayer 4.0 released - H.264/RMVB/TV-Out improved http://bit.ly/rwfxR3

What's New in GoodPlayer Version 4.0
1. H.264(MKV,AVI,MP4,MOV) playback performance improved
2. RealVideo (RM, RMVB) playback performance improved greatly, now on iPad 2, 1280x720 (720P) RealVideo (RM/RMVB) playback supported. For other iOS device models, RealVideo playback performance is improved accordingly. And RealVideo (RM, RMVB) image quality also improved
3. For iOS 5.0.1+, now the files will remain on device, even in low storage situations. Upgrade to iOS 5.0.1+ is recommended
4. Russian localization improved, thanks Kireev again
5. Portuguese localization improved, thanks Junior Vidotti
6. Add a Home Page setting for built-in browser
7. TVMOBiLi UPnP/DLNA media server supported
8. TV-Out resolution options added, from 640*480 to 1920*1080
9. SMB/DLNA m3u playlist support improved, supports auto next item playback

One more important note for AirPlay Mirroring: please set settings -> TV-Out to "Turn on always" for AirPlay Mirroring.
For the GoodPlayer 4.0 version, there are some tv-out resolution options that will affect AirPlay Mirroring resolution.
Please set GoodPlayer Settings->TV-Out to "Turn on always", and set the "TV-Out resolution" to a value suitable for the TV

----------

TV-Out resolution options added, from 640*480 to 1920*1080

Please note that only the latest iDevice such iPad 2 can support true 1920x1080

Do you know when we will get 720/1080p TV out?

It's a very long thread, but can GoodPlayer play MKV files with multiple SRT subtitles, multiple audio tracks (AAC or MP3), and videos encoded in H.264 baseline?

I'm sort of disappointed that GoodPlayer can't play 540p videos smoothly with the iPhone 4. Why is it unable to do so when the default player can supposedly handle 720p videos?

System default play uses hardware acceleration decoding, so it can supports 720P.
GoodPlayer native playback only uses software decoding, so 540P is hard for iPhone 4.

GoodPlayer can play MKV files with multiple SRT subtitles, only one or none subtitle can be used at one moment.
GoodPlayer can play multiple audio tracks (AAC or MP3), only one audio track can be used at one moment.
GoodPlayer can play videos encoded in H.264 baseline.

Thanks a lot for the quick response. Before I go out and purchase a license, I have a few more questions to ask.

Are there any AAC, MP3, or H.264 profiles that GoodPlayer won't support? What's the highest/best bitrate/profile that GoodPlayer support for these respective codecs?

Will the iPhone 4S play 540p videos smoothly since it shares the same hardware as the iPad 2?

Is GoodPlayer 4.0 capable of playing 720p videos smoothly with the iPad 2?

Do you have any plans to get GoodPlayer to use hardware acceleration or that is not allowed by Apple through its APIs?

Thanks again for the help.

There are no known unsupported AAC, MP3, or H.264 profiles so far.
There is no specific number for highest/best bitrate/profile supported.

iPhone 4S should be able to play 540P videos, iPhone 4S should be 20% slower than the iPad 2. The CPU frequency of iPhone 4S is lower than iPad 2's. You can send us the 540P samples for testing.

For iPad 2 on 4.0 version, from user's feedback now nearly 95% 720P files can be played back smoothly. Only the most complex encoded 720P files have issues now.

GoodPlayer iPod plugin uses hardware acceleration for playback. But it only supports limited file formats:mov, m4v, mp4. For iPod plugin, 1080P is possible. Besides this , there is no other official API to use hardware acceleration.

What are the complex encoding options to avoid I ensure smooth 720p playback?

There is no simple answer to it. Please search "X264 H.264 encoding" for related information.

We put 4 files parameters here for reference, 2 simple encoded files, 2 complex encoded files
http://www.hustmobile.com/goodplayer/encode.html

For simple encoding ,even 1920x816 H.264 video can be played back smoothly on the iPad 2 with GoodPlayer 4.0.

Here are some brief suggests (again, this is just for quick start, please check related encoding information carefully, there are too many parameters out there):
1. CABAC , hard
2. too many reference frames , hard
3. High profile, hard

We chatted a little about it in email, but the ability to play 3d video, like the ones that have left and right video in frame, would be great.:)

That can turn into

I just realize that Blu-Ray doesn't utilize SRT subtitles. Does GoodPlayer support Blu-Ray's subtitle format?

Never tested original Blu-Ray files. Any such Blu-Ray(with subtitle) files for testing?

Just found 2 Blu-Ray files and gave a test, Blu-Ray's subtitle is not supported now.

The subtitle format for Blu-Rays is PGS. I don't think it would be legal for me to post any original blu-ray files.

Would you consider adding support for PGS subtitles?

Surely we will try to support it in the future.

Hi, I've just bought the app, mainly for an Ipad 2, and the video is flawless, I didn't have a single issue.
A couple of notes though, it doesn't support the embedded subtitles for the mkv container, it doesn't support any subtitles when watching over UPnP/DLNA, and it should be able to pick up the subtitles when watching a movie over smb, instead you have to copy the subtitle file to the iPad and watch the movie over SMB, it kinda defeats the purpose of watching it over the network.

1. “embedded subtitles for the mkv container”, all our tested mkv embedded subtitles are supported on both local and streaming.
Please make swipe gesture to select subtitle tracks.
✔ Swipe fingers up/down on playing, to change the subtitle or turn off subtitle on the fly (for media files with subtitles)
✔ Swipe fingers left/right on playing, to change the audio track on the fly (for media files with multiple audio tracks)
If you still have issue with mkv subtitle, please share your mkv file with us, you can upload it to Dropbox or other file sharing site.

2. UPnP/DLNA subtitle issue, UPnP/DLNA is HTTP generally. However some UPnP/DLNA servers changed the filename part in the URL, so the subtitle filename matching would never success for these UPnP/DLNA servers, we are still working on this case.
