Bug Report(s)

First, let me say for the most part this is an excellent app. I am able to streaming most files via PS3 Media Server/Windows Media Player sharing flawlessly.

Here are the issues I've come across in the newest release:

1) I turned on the new "iPod Fullscreen option." When I turned it back off, the app crashed. This occurs every time and does not seem affected by other settings/open apps.

2) The app crashed when streaming a 4 GB .mk4 via uPnP. The incident occured about halfway through the video. Additionally, my iPad two went into DNF/recovery mode for about 5 minutes before finally resetting. I have cut the file size down via HandBrake (about 1/4 of the original size and optimized for iPad), so perhaps this will resolve the issue for now.

3) Streaming via FTP outside my home network (i.e. remotely) crashes the app.

If some of these issues exceed the limitations on the app/hardware/network connection I understand. Thanks for all your hard work :)

Thanks.

1. "iPod Fullscreen" issue will be fixed in the next 5.5 version

2. We do no know why this issue happens. Can you play the issued media files locally?
For HTTP/DLNA/UPnP MKV streaming, our another app PowerPlayer should be better in this case. PowerPlayer supports H.264 hardware decoding during HTTP/DLNA streaming.
Please contact service@hustmobile.com for a PowerPlayer promo code if you are interested.

3. Do you mean the local FTP access is okay? We do not know why this issue happens too. We will fix a FTP symbolic link issue in the next 5.5 version. However we do not know if this fix will help your case.

Downloading

I may be missing something, but....

I cannot figure out how to download a folder....only individual files. Which means I need to check off sack file....tedious when a set of, say, 50 files.

I also cannot see anyway to download directly to a folder in GP. Which means if I want some logical organization, I need to move each file from download to a folder.

Appreciate your assistance...John

For folder downloading, WebDAV/DLNA/SFTP/FTP clients support it, click the right blue arrow icon of the folder in the above mentioned clients, the menu will pop up with folder downloading option.

For path information, all the downloaded files will be in the GoodPlayer "Download" folder without original folder path information left, we will check if we can improve it in the future.

If you are able to maintain the original folder info when downloading, I would appreciate if you would also look being able to move the entire folder out of the 'download' folder.

Thanks...John

Would anyone be willing to share their optimal Goodplayer settings that they have found to work best?

I just bought the app and was looking for a good place to start.

Thanks!

For best GoodPlayer performance, please check these settings
(sometimes, a reboot of iDevice will help):
1 Multi Core Decoding to "On"
2 High Quality Mode to "Off"
3 Deinterlacing to "Off"
4 Turning off "Retina Display" will introduce other performance improvement, especially for iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4gen

Cut and paste is supported in the GoodPlayer file manager (main window -->bottom left icon), so we will always keeps all the downloaded files in the Download folder.

Apple TV

i just got an Apple TV. Apple's Podcast app streams fine.

Goodplayer seems to be Avignon a proble. Sound, but blank video.

Mirroring will work, but poorly with black edges on four sides.

Not sure if it s me, user error....or something ese.

John

This is normal. AirPlay Mirroring needs extra processing power, if GoodPlayer nearly uses up the processing power, then there is no enough processing power for it.
If it is H.264 video media files, please give PowerPlayer a try, since PowerPlayer uses hardware acceleration for H.264 decoding, the processing power can be used for the AirPlay Mirroring.
So we can say that for H.264 based media such as mkv file, PowerPlayer is better at AirPlay Mirroring.

Please contact powerplayer@hustmobile.com for powerplayer promo code if you are interested on it.

I guess I didn't communicate well.

Mirroring works.

Without mirroring, the sound can be heard, but no video. A very little window shows in corner of screen, the disappears.

I'll look at power player anyway

Does it make any real difference if the video is in mp4 or mkv? Irrespective of using either Good/Power player.

Also, is there a PowerPlayer support thread such as this one?

John

It does. You'll always want to prefer M4V / mov / mp4 files to MKV's and will always want to "remux" the latter to the former prior to playback as Apple doesn't let devs play back the content of non-M4V / mov / mp4 files using hardware acceleration. (Also see the links at http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/a...layer-released-full-pre-playback-mkv-remuxing )

There is: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1381635/

Not sure what, exactly, you mean by latter to former.

Is m4v better than mp4?

John

Yes, GoodPlayer supports the iPad to HDMI on a tv.

Sorry I meant iPad 2, in the GoodPlayer description it mentions iPad, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4 ONLY, I own an iPhone 4S and iPad 2 so I wanted to make sure before I purchase the GoodPlayer app and HDMI connector

Thanks

iPhone 4S , iPad 2 and iPad 3 support HDMI on a tv too. Since these are new models after we wrote the app description, so we do not list them in the description.

Is it possible to implement some kind of "frame drop/skip" mode for 1080i and 720p mpeg2 video files? I record HD television shows that choke Goodplayer (video plays for a couple seconds, then pauses, and then resumes after a few seconds). If Goodplayer could drop a frame every so often it may make the video playback better. I know the frame rate might suffer a little, but at least the video won't pause every few seconds.

Just wondering if this has been tried/tested.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, none of the existing players are able to play these hires MPEG-2 files properly (without visible / annoying stuttering or other problems).

The best (most fluent / least stuttering) results were produced by VM Player HD http://itunes.apple.com/app/vm-player-hd/id445667199?mt=8 (the trial version may be worth a quick test: it's not very restricted – just an ad continuously displayed and it's unable to stream files over 500M, but for quick testing purposes like this it'll work just fine: http://itunes.apple.com/app/vm-player-hd-lite/id499291265?mt=8 )

HOWEVER, it plays back the content at a much lower resolution than the other (much more stuttering, but hi-res) players. That is, ONLY use it if you don't watch the content from close but from at least 30" (1m).

Other players with adequate speed:

AVPlayerHD by EPLAYWORKS.Co.Ltd. http://itunes.apple.com/app/avplayerhd/id407976815?mt=8

GPlayer by Ginkgo Tech http://itunes.apple.com/app/gplayer/id438402174?mt=8

Oplayer HD by olimsoft http://itunes.apple.com/app/oplayer-hd/id373236724?mt=8

EC Player http://itunes.apple.com/app/ec-player/id442154538?mt=8

It's worth pointing out that, while ProPlayer ( http://itunes.apple.com/app/proplayer-the-video-player/id454180376?mt=8 ), generally, has the same video decoder as AVPlayerHD, this doesn't seem to be the case with these 1080i MPEG2 TS videos – its playback performance is way inferior to that of AVPlayerHD.

Again, if you don't mind the low-res playback, give a try to VM Player HD http://itunes.apple.com/app/vm-player-hd/id445667199?mt=8 first, it's the fastest.

Playback Screen Blank When Streaming, Opening From Another App

I am having trouble playing video/audio files that are being streamed or opened from another app. I am on the latest GoodPlayer version and have the rebooted my iPad 2 and other devices.

I have a USB drive connected to my Belkin N300 router with a DD-WRT. This router is acting as a port forwarder and is behind another router. I also have a SimpleTech NAS 250 connected via ethernet to the the Belkin Router. I am able to browse files on both the USB drive and SimpleTech NAS through SMB, both on my iPad and computer.

However, when I try to play a video (AVI, MKV) and audio file (MP3) from the USB drive or Simpletech NAS on my iPad with Good Player, the screen just goes blank (though the play buttons, progress bar appears, but no time). Samet hing if I use a file browser and try to open the file in GoodPlayer.

If I browse the SMB shares and download the file, the file will playback, but at differing quality (from good to bad).

Thanks for the great rundown of all the apps. You're right that VM Player does the best at playing back my HD mpeg2 files. I don't mind the lower res playback, even. The big problem is that SMB streaming doesn't work well. If I copy a file over, it plays back fine. Trying to stream from my server, though, results in stutters and pauses in playback. I'm streaming over a 5GHz N network, so bandwidth shouldn't be a problem.

There's an app in beta called InstaTV that can stream HD mpeg2 over my wireless network from my HDHomerun ATSC/QAM tuner. It cuts the frame rate down on 1080i and 720p video streams and plays them back admirably. This is for live programming, though. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a video player that can do the same for recorded programming.

Maybe the GoodPlayer developers can contact the InstaTV developer to figure out how he does it :).
