IMHO, they mostly bought Tony Fadell.
In few times, this guy will be one of Google vice-presidents and will support a department related to smartphones.
Fadell has the same obsession as Jobs had for design and user experience (look at Nest), which is sorely lacking with Google.
They also bought Bryan James, vice president of engineering, who worked on the iWatch and who joined Nest.

Apple's board may be fuming once again after Waze's buying :p
Maybe they should get rid of Cook
:D

This pisses me off.

Too angry to write straight…I actually screamed when I saw this. My wife ran into the room wondering what's wrong. What's wrong? My favorite non-Apple company is now owned by the evil empire and our home is going to start spying on us. That's what's fraking wrong!

I'm fuming mad.

I'm thinking exactly the same thing. Mine is going offline and staying offline this very minute. Sorry Google, you can f#ck off with your spying on every aspect of my life.

If Fadell was so important Jobs would never have let him leave Apple would he? He could have offered Fadell hardware engineering for iPhone/iPod. Instead he hired Mark Papermaster.

Are you Sarah Connor?

Skynet folks must be stoked…

Now Google can run stats on home temperature settings.

I swear they're only a couple steps away from taking over the world.

what are they going to know... that my house is a cool calm 20c year round, no matter the outside weather.

thats usefull :p

All you guys are a bunch of sore losers. IF you don't like competition then just turn of all your electronic devices and get off the Internet. Believe me Apple/MS/Google and all the other big companies are in the same bed with the same idea's. This is no surprise at all. Thanks for listening.

Yup. Comments would have been different if apple purchase Nest...

Google is evil.

I will not have anything to do with Google and its invasions into my personal life. Period.

Will never own a Nest. Looking forward to decking the first ******* who turns their Google Glass in my general direction.

Not sure why all the Google hate. I'm not a fan of android, but Google Fiber is awesome. The DVR setup is really nice, and the interface is simple and clean. If they can roll this out to more places, and integrate it with thermostats, smoke alarms, and maybe security systems, could be pretty awesome. Then do some lighting & appliance communication and you could be entirely wired. Apple doesn't seem to want to get into the home so I don't see what the big deal is.

Now Nest will use Android. You'll be able to root it, add widgets, see the weather, time and date, it'll have NFC, it'll have an 18MP camera that also shoots 4K video, be 3x bigger, it will use Google voice, it will have a stylus, have multitasking, split windows and it will be able to make calls.

And in bars that haven't yet banned Nest, it will be able to take photographs of you in the bathroom.

This pisses me off.

Google made a very smart move. It opens up yet one more point of entry for them to dominate.

While some of the posts here reveal peoples fear of Google, it's largely unfounded. Anyone who thinks Googles collecting info on customers is evil, they're easily mislead. Privacy is a thing of the past. Facebook proves that.

The real nefarious entities are big data & insurance companies. They've done it longer, better, and are solely focused on their goals at the customers expense which includes stripping away their so called privacy. Compared to these pro's Googles a novice.

Obviously since Apple purchasing Nest would have been for completely different reasons than Google purchasing Nest. They are two completely different companies.

How does anyone expect the comments to be the same for two completely different events?

Am I the only one who doesn't see $3 billion of value in a thermostat company? Is there more to this company than meets the eye? The valuation seems just a tad inflated.

How about a bunch of really good ex-Apple employees who know quite a bit how business is done behind the curtains at Apple? Any value in that, you think?

Why haven't they hired Scott Forstall then?

You made me make an account just to address this horrible logic. Privacy is not a thing of the past. Facebook doesn't even know my real name, my birthday, or really anything else about me besides my IP address… not because I care about my privacy but because I don't want my real name, birthdate, and city up there for all the identity thieves to see. Plus I don't see any advantage in putting my real info up there. So where's your proof now?

Google's trying to collect a ton of data with Google+. Like Facebook but more because they control more websites and products. They want all the info they can get, but I kinda doubt their smoke detectors are going to gather anything. Honestly, I don't care; I just want my freaking YouTube inbox back, and I want to be able to comment on my OWN VIDEOS without signing up for a social network I don't want to deal with.

As a curator and connoisseur of schadenfreude, I've found great pleasure in your post.

Nest thermostats, and Nest Protect smoke detectors both have motion sensors to determine if you are home or not. If you have more than one Protect, they can determine which floor or room you are in. They are programmed with your location so they can use local weather forecasts.

Google will know where you are located. Google will know when you're home. Google will know when you're away. Over time, Google will know your work schedule. Google will know when you worked overtime. Google will know when you went out to dinner. Google will know your days off. Google will know when you have taken a two week vacation. Google will know if you get up at 3 AM then go back to bed.

They couldn't care less about Nest products. They are buying $3.2 billion of user data. Remember, Google's customer's are advertisers, you are the product.

"Couldn't care less" is the phrase you're looking for. And Google is not going to risk totally destroying its public image by having smoke detectors that spy on people. Let's be realistic.

But isn't it?
$100 billion
$100 billion
$100 billion?

That's how much cash Apple has in the bank earning 1% interest.

Apple can buy so many companies, but they don't. Apple could invest twice as much in R&D, but they don't. Apple doesn't need to buy Nest, or Square, or Flipboard, but Apple does need to do something, or the world is going to pass them by.

Apple should indeed do something more "bold" than focusing on paying dividends to their shareholders. Not sure what it would be, but a company so successful as Apple should also aim for something greater than milking money on slow incremental hardware upgrades. It starts to feel like something is missing.

"Couldn't care less" is the phrase you're looking for.

Corrected.

I am being realistic. I work in online advertising. Data = money. The more I know about you, the more I can charge for an ad impression. And Google's public image in regards to privacy is pretty darn shredded already.

I don't think that would destroy Google's public image since nobody apparently seems to think a motion sensor thermostat which knows if you are awake and walking around the house constitutes as "spying". If it is spying, Nest was already doing that.
