It will change the dynamics. For example, it could increase the ********-to-signal ratio, because you don’t have to write the text yourself anymore.

There are racists and conspiracy theorists already trying to make chatbots that are trained on racist and conspiracy theorist misinfo.

Echo chambers will still exist, extremists will just use this for themselves.

Anyone who tries to stop them or criticise them will be accused of trying to oppress their “free speech”.

People will still type, because whether you are at home, or at work, or in a public place, you don’t want people to hear you talking to your computer and you don’t want them to hear you.
Oh, I don't expect newer generations to drop typing. Nor an abundance of people in open spaces using assistants rather than typing on their phone screens.

But in private homes and spaces? I imagine we're a couple generations away from asking an assistant for information rather than picking up a device to type it in.

Need a bot that will do my taxes for me.

In a recent test, ChatGPT failed to work out interest payment on a 3% interest rate account.

They need to be multi-modal to work properly for math and science and language.

But the problem is scaling, Multi-modal systems that serve over a billion users would consume huge amounts of hardware and energy.

There is a compute ceiling at some point. Companies like Google and Microsoft will struggle to justify spending more money on GPUs and building more power stations if it completely eats their profit margins.

So it looks like you’ll still be using an accountant or a calculator for a long time.

Totally private, sure. But even then, rarely. If you’re listening to music at the same time you don’t really want to speak over your music.

Then again, speech recognition isn’t solved completely. Siri frustrates me endlessly when it says it didn’t understand what I said or only caught have the sentence because of lag.

Who'd have thought that the most fantastical aspect of Star Trek wasn't the natural conversational ability of the ship's computer, but the fact that the computer didn't misunderstand a single word of anyone's inquiry.

AI is general but it is very inefficient. On the other hand, simple logic is very specific but it is very efficient. So AI is very inefficient.

It has been almost three decades since Al Gore coined the term ‘information superhighway’.

It was supposed to bring education and information at our fingertips.

It was supposed to make everyone smarter.

But people still believe the world is flat, that Bill Gates space lizards are trying to hurt people with 5G vaccines, and that UFOs built pyramids.

This won’t change anything.

Idiots will continue idioting.

And Facebook and Twitter will keep building Idiot Echo Chambers.
I well remember the ‘90s promise of the Internet being the gateway to a new period of enlightenment for humanity.

Nowadays it seems that all that it has done is connect the previously-isolated village idiots.

Explain to me how conversational chat functionality is useful to an Internet search engine.
Because search is broken today. You get lots of results and then you have to peruse through all of them to get what you are looking for. Sometimes you don't find it.

ChatGPT style bots give you exactly what you are looking for and are able to answer follow up questions with surprising accuracy. They do all the heavy lifting of gathering information and present it nicely and concisely just for you.

The problem isn't necessary the village idiots, it's more the fact our lives aren't getting better. We're becoming isolated to those that are physically around us. The world doesn't need AI, or another web based app or API, we need to get our heads out of our asses and come together.

Barely ever find it. It's just like 25 Apple Discussions and Reddit and other forums where people ask the same question with no response or worthless ones. :
