Once again we have Google whining that it's Apple's fault that RCS isn't being adopted.

Maybe when it becomes an industry standard, fully supports E2EE, and not a Google-backed pile of hurt Apple will adopt it.

Either way Apple is under no obligation to cater to the whims of Google or its users

Just a reminder that RCS has been around for more than a decade, and Google is only pissy about it now because all their proprietary competitors didn't work.

RCS is better all around than SMS. Why is everyone here being pro Apple when clearly apple is in the wrong?
I think a lot of people in this thread think Google wants Apple to replace iMessage even though that isn't the case.

Apple will stand their ground until the carriers push this change. Then they will magically implement it really quickly given they have probably been working on it for a while. Eventually carriers will require all new devices support rcs. The question is will that be in a year or 10 years. No one knows.

Here's what I want from the messaging app on my iPhone:
  • Photos and videos that go to, and come from, Android users to not look like crap.
  • To have tapbacks work properly so I stop getting the annoying new messages saying someone liked my message.
That's it. I don't care at all about what technology or standards or anything gets used to do so. Just make it happen.

Google talks about E2E, but I read on The Verge that this is not part of the RCS standard given to carrier, something Google calls Universal Profile. The encryption standard adopted by Google is proprietary and is built on top of RCS into Android Messages.

So the carriers implementation of RCS is not encrypted in any way just like SMS is not encrypted.

What’s the point of Apple adopting RCS?

Haven't we been through this already? Google should fix what's broken and adopt iMessage.
Google can't adopt Facetime or iMessage as Apple won't allow it. So, in this case, Apple needs to play nice with others. Steve Jobs even said that Facetime would be open source and that never materialized. People should be able to communicate on a unified standard and not keep others out because they won't want to buy their product.

No thanks, I like iMessage.

Discord and WhatsApp exists for a reason.
iMessage would not disappear if Apple adopted RCS. It would continue to work between iPhone users as it does now.

The big upgrade you'd experience would be communication between your friends on Android. Apple won't adopt it simply because they don't want users to realize that RCS is almost as good as iMessage which would negate a competitive advantage.

Lots of people here are confused as to what Google is asking for... They aren't asking Apple to replace iMessage with RCS. They are asking Apple to replace SMS with RCS.

SMS is technology from the 90s. It sucks. RCS is a more modern version of SMS. It's a lot better.

Apple users will benefit in every conversation they have with their family/friends that don't have iPhones.

Why would Apple implement RCS when they have iMessage? Strategically they won't do it because it's one less thing locking you to your iPhone and I can't see iPhone users clamoring for RCS support when iMessage already provides everything that RCS supports. The problem for Google and why they are trying to get Apple to implement RCS is that kids without an iPhone are second class citizens when it comes to messaging and no kid wants to the be the one in a group chat that is green. So the result is every kid has or wants an iPhone and that is obviously not good for Google. So Google tries to make Apple look like the bad guy when in reality they are trying to weaken Apple's position.

The carrier’s version of RCS is useless, and Google’s version isnt the standard and relies on their relay servers to work in addition. That’s the core problem

If the carriers consistently supported a useful version of RCS as an upgrade to SMS I suspect Apple would adopt it even without a cudgel
Pretty much. Just like MMS. The first iPhone ONLY supported SMS. But, because the carriers supported MMS, MMS support eventually came to the iPhone. No Google ad campaign required. :)

I wonder is there anyone who actually trusts Meta?
There are people who don’t trust them and there are people who don’t care. The people who don’t care is the bread and butter of data mining companies.

Apple will eventually adopt RCS but still green bubble android users and tapbacks still won't work
