Do folks think these are for real or are we looking at another Zune-like failure?

8GB? 16GB? Seems a bit skimpy in the storage dept.

I have to think that ultimately Google is no Apple in the hardware department, but let them take a tilt at the windmill.apple. Only time will tell.

Google approach is much more "cloudy" than Apple's. Probably in the near future the local storage will be just a cache of most used apps/data and the rest will be backed up in a local sync station (Nexus Q ?? Or a Time Capsule like device) besides, of course, the cloud.

I like the target price. It will sell well here in Brazil. If it supports bluetooth DUN (no tablet does without 3rd-party apps) and connect to ad-hoc access points (only iPad does), it would be awesome.

External microSD slot is a plus, but with a good cache technology, wouldn't be essential.

Its made in the United States, for one. From Engadget:
"Google didn't touch on it during its keynote, but The New York Times' John Markoff has the story on one fairly unique feature of its Nexus Q home media device: the base of the unit proudly boasts that it's "Designed and Manufactured in the U.S.A." That includes an unnamed company in the Midwest that manufactures the metal base and another in Southern California that makes the case, while the device itself was reportedly being assembled just last week at a large factory 15 minutes away from Google's HQ. According to Google, it hopes that people will be willing to pay more for the device as a result ($299, if you missed it), but it has no plans to play up the "Made in the U.S.A." angle in its marketing."

So a 200$ premium for US Manufacturing, NFC, and a 25 Watt Amp. Ill pass.

No. Apple is a software company. Their profits may come with selling hardware. But they are mostly software company. Because of software their hardware sells so well.

iPad is iOS in a beautiful design. Same with iPhone.

Well I am sorry you are contradicting yourself...
“Their profits may come with selling hardware" means nothing more than being hardware oriented company...
iOS is just cherry on the cake, same for OS X. And by the way this AAPL is all about hardware point is a discussion I had with a top executive there back in 2010... I doubt their vision changed in the meantime...

The reason the iPhone has been "butter smooth" since day one is because they don't need much power to run and aren't as "resource-heavy" as Android, especially in multitasking.

You make it sound that it's a coincidence that iPhones are "butter smooth" and not "resource-heavy", rather than that Apple engineers simply gave the user experience a much higher priority and built accordingly - not a bad thing in my book.

This is why I live Google another killer product running the best mobile is. Ordered 2 thanks google. Ipad in serious trouble

I disagree .. I think the Nexus 7 is targeting a different class of consumers than those who buy iPads. This is a 7 inch device with no rear facing camera, with a choice of 8 or 16 GB of storage only, I think this device is competing with the Kindle Fire.

There are many people who only use tablets to check email, read a book or casually surf the web from their sofas, a device at this price point will appeal to them. People with heavy duty requirements from their tablets, those who buy a lot of apps etc will continue to buy iPad.

What does this even mean in concrete terms? Games?

Photoshop.

The first company that offers me full on ungimped up Photoshop on a tablet with a digitizer screen will be the company I throw pounds and pounds and pounds of money at.

This is why I want the Surface. Also because I'll be able to play my emulators and Spelunky without jailbreaking. So yeah, games too.

I'd phrase it different, iOS and OSX and especially iTunes are absolutely core to Apple's business and much more than a cherry on top.

You're absolutely right that those are simply tools to drive hardware sales, however, there's a distinct reason that iTunes is the place where you get both your iPhone and iPad apps and that the Mac App store is looking remarkably similar...

I guess there are two main differences:
* Nexus Q is much better solution for listening to music. You connect it to speakers and that's it. It can still be connected to a TV but for music only one does not need to turn the TV on. It will also enhance sound for TV programs too (with decent speakers) although those with Home Theater setups would not need it..

You don't need to turn on the TV to listen to music from the Apple TV. Plug it in to a receiver.

As for the big three parts to this.... Jelly bean, tablet, and Q:

Jelly bean looks like a big improvement, but let's be real here.... It will hit 5% user base by July of 2013.

The tablet is aimed square at amazon not apple. It's specs are pretty weak at best in what it doesn't have. The big thing for me is storage. I've been a tablet user for 3 years and no matter how hard I try to keep things streamlined, I use every bit of 25gb. 8 is a joke, 16 still not manageable without seriously watching what you do. Again though, apple won't be the least not phased here. This one is between google and amazon.

The Q is a complete 'fail'. It's a joke in basically every conceivable category and they will absolutely not sell. They wouldn't sell at 199 or even 150

The tablet is cheaper than iPad 2 and has way better specs:
* faster CPU
* good front-face camera
* GPS (no GPS on WiFi iPad)
* NFC
* better screen (higher resolution)
* Magnetometer

Well, you may want to look at the interview on AllthingsD with Steve Jobs, where he says the same thing i have written.

Huh?

Yes, you're talking about the iPad 2 which is about 2 years old now. How does it compare to the iPad 3 ? One thing I will say is that Apple should definitely come out with a 7" iPad. One size doesn't fit all.

Hmmm...

1 million Andrioid activation per day (yea, solid number announced today in IO). You will get over it. Let your anger settle down. You will realize that resistance is futile.

Remember at I/O a few years ago when the big speech was about how Google was stepping in because they didn't think one company should control the mobile marketplace...

Did you not agree with them then, or do you just not care now that it's a company that harvests your data for marketing purposes?

I'm delighted by the Surface, THAT looks interesting. This stuff... just more of the same. I preordered a Nexus 7. I hope I am wrong about it, but I'm guessing it ends up keeping the Kindle Fire company on my shelf.

I will never understand (it honestly is just beyond me), how someone can sit there and use an Android device (of which I have tried many) and not feel like it is a poor copy of an iPhone. It feels "sloppy." I understand that's not a quantifiable thing, but it leads to a product that I do not find enjoyable to use. The iPhone and Windows Phone (7+) interfaces are created like someone cared about them - that's about the only way I can articulate it.

Slightly stronger CPU, a bit weaker GPU, and a screen resolution that's not quite up there with the whole retina display dealie the kids are going on about these days.

Overall it's not quite as strong as the iPad 3, but it's also exactly half the price. Going back to the whole bang for the buck thing again, I'd say it's almost a better deal all things considered.

Correct. A mid 2012 rig has a better proc than an early 2011. It's also smaller, plastic and I garauntee they are making no money on it. They are simply showing up to stop the amazon fork and show off jellybean..... An OS that nobody will really get to play with for a year.
