No, Flitzy is wrong, Facetime is not an open standard. Using some open standards doesn't make it an open standard

Yup. An open standard needs a third party to be able to implement it.

At the moment that is impossible.

So it isn't an open standard. Apple did just flat out lie about this.

Can we please can the absolute statements. Keep this kind of discussion going and someone will end up in Time Out.

As the Wikipedia quote implies above, Apple said they would work to make Facetime an open standard. That is certainly not the case today. However, there also is no evidence that they are, or are not, actively pursuing it as they suggested at the keynote.

However, there also is no evidence that they are, or are not, actively pursuing it as they suggested at the keynote.

It's been two years and they haven't even published a draft to any standards body, and have acted to actively lock down the implementation with hardware certificates.

Remember, the exact quote from Jobs at the keynote was "we're going to the standards bodies, starting tomorrow." This did not happen, and has gone way beyond the point of something that could be explained by a staffer being off sick or even a little bit more work to do than had been expected.

I really don't see how you could describe that at this point as anything other than a lie?

This did not happen
How do we know this didn't happen? Maybe they started something, maybe even the day after the keynote, but didn't pursue it for one reason or another.

All we know for sure is that it isn't an open, ratified standard today despite Apple's early assurances that "they'd take care of it" and despite the fact that it is in fact built on top of several other standards that are open and ratified.

Because the relevant standards bodies all publish their submitted drafts, and none of have been published, so none were ever submitted.

If they didn't persue it, it was a lie.

If you are not in an area with an open WiFi network, WiFi only devices are effectively offline. 3G/4G devices aren't. That was Lindsford's point.

Well then it was an utterly useless point to make then as the solution to no sd card slots INCLUDING the iPad is not extreme data charges from mobile carriers but free wifi hotspots.

Unless you really do have more money then sense?

Looking forward to getting a N7 16GB. I am heavily entrenched in the iOS ecosystem, but it'll be fun to futz with something different. Also might make a good tablet for the kids.

Part of me wants to wait until the iPhone 5 announcement in the fall though, to see if the mythical 7" iPad shows up.

The Nexus Q is quite curious though. $300, and it doesn't do 1/4 of what my $70 Rokus do. Beautifully engineered, but if I can't make use of Hulu+, Netflix, and my own Plex server, it's kind of a non-starter for me.

I agree. I'm definitely going to wait until the Fall. If a 7" iPad arrives for approximately $300, I will buy it even though I have the iPad 2. Apple is sure to market it as a premium 7" device, so I don't think it will sell for much less than $300.

I would appreciate a smaller form factor for reading ebooks. My iPod Touch is just too small and the iPad, while great, for longer reading sessions, it's a bit awkward.

How isn't it? Apple pioneered the single store policy and code signing, and have used it to block applications with content they don't approve of, including sexual freedom applications, artistic works, parodies and political speech.

Yes, a PRIVATE COMPANY making a decision about what to allow on their OWN service is TOTALLY the same thing as the government of China controlling access.

Hahahhahaha... no.

Apple can do what they want with their store that THEY created.

And, in case you haven't seen, it's widely popular.

Hmmm... well, the Nexus itself look pretty good. AS in, I like it's aesthetics. Seems useful too... I wonder how good the sound quality is though, for the amplification. I'm picky about my sound quality... (which is why I would never spend $399 on speakers made by... google! Although you never know, they might sound good).

I'm hoping the tablet functionality will actually be good though since it's more directly backed by google. Only time will tell!

Ok... I see one thing Google missed.
No external memory card support.
So it's either 8GB or 16GB.... sorry, but that's a failure in my book.

True. But I think this shows they only consider the Fire their direct competition. It's twice as viable as the 8GB-only Fire. The Galaxy Tab has ICS 4.0 and 8GB + SD slot.

I will be buying one just to support MADE IN AMERICA

I do have use for a second tablet, and was planning on buying another iPad, but this one caught my eye.
1. Made in America
2. Far better than Fire
3. For email and reading books, and quick web surfing.

This is not a bad unit for the price.

LETS PUT AMERICA BACK TO WORK.
This is the only way we are going to get ourselves out of this damn hole we are in.
It is about time that Corporations think about America First, instead of their damn, how many Billions do I need to make at the expense of the workers, which in return gives us a Return in Tax $$$'s
The more Corporations make, the fewer Tax $$$'s come in

I love my iPad for reading, but it is a bit heavy, 7" would fill the spot nice.

The tablet isn't made in America. The Nexus Q media receiver is, which explains why something without its own UI is $299...

Yeah, I'll pay $50 or so more for an iPad, if it comes out. Otherwise the N7 is fine. The one compelling thing about the N7 is that it does have GPS. That means I could pair it with my car's stereo with BT, as well as use it for navigation. It'd be cool to figure out a way to mount it in there.

I'm skeptical that'd you'd ever see an OS update for the Tab, and I also greatly dislike Touchwiz. The N7 may not have the SD slot, but the pure Android OS plus the likelihood of getting at least one or two OS updates is nice.

I'm sorry but there is a big world out side of America.

Google started taking pre-orders for its $199 tablet, the Nexus 7, yesterday after the product was announced.
At such a competitive price, you'd think it would sell pretty well at first.
It is.
We cornered Hugo Barra, the director of product management for Android, at a press meet and greet last night to get some insight.
Barra wouldn't give us a specific number of course, but he said the first-day pre-orders were really, really good. When we pressed for a ballpark figure, he gave us a knowing smirk and said "it's big."

Eh? Are you suggesting the Nexus 7 has no WiFi? Or the Google Glass? Because both do have it .
Please explain your post in more detail.

Reread what I wrote. If there is no wifi (as in wifi available where you are, ie. plane, hotel, cabin in the woods etc) cloud storage is unavailable. Which is why most don't mind paying more for more storage.

I never said anything about google glass?

My point is the 8gb is hardly a tablet, it's a toy/web browser.

16GB is acceptable but costs almost $300 after everything is said and done.

That is totally pathetic!

Not what you write, that is correct, but Apples policy.

Why must I d/l from iTunes? And not just any iTunes, no, a specific local iTunes. That is totally silly.

To give you a specific example: I was planning a trip to Germany, as part of the trip is shopping I wanted to get the Aldi app:

http://itunes.apple.com/de/app/aldi-nord/id390394197?mt=8

It's a free app, but I can't install it since it's not in my local iTunes. How stupid is that?

I want freedom, not the by Apple defined freedom.
