Facebook can't catch up without changing their model. With G+ you can follow people who aren't your friends or neither your friends' friends or in your network, etc. You add a dude (or gal) to some circle and you'll see their public updates. It might eat somewhat into the Twitter crowd as you can use it for exactly the same purpose (and much more).

Even though it's early, I already think FB is too late to recover. These social networking websites are either niche sites (IE Linkedin) or succeed each other as king of the hill. FB is old now, has privacy issues that are solved by G+, and G+ has enough PR and interest to reach Gladwell's Tipping Point. And Google's engineers are smart enough to make it work and expand the feature set and they already have experience from both Wave and Orkut.

Now we just wait for people to migrate over.

Wow, you guys are fast! I'm in. Thanks to everyone who sent me an invite (I just used the first one).

If anybody still has invites I sure would like to try this out.

thanks!

So is registration open to the public yet or do people still require invites? I can send invites if anyone needs them as that feature seems to finally be working.

Google+

What do people think of Google+ so far? I'm curious as to the level of integration things will get with Google+ on iPhone since Google is a direct competitor, especially since the Twitter integration in iOS5. As far as I've read it will get it's own app once it's out of beta stages. Personally, I think this could be huge and could be a unifying point between iOS and Android if both were to feature, but I'm not sure if Jobs would like it, especially seeing as they seem to be trying to cut their ties to Google.

What do you guys think? Would you prefer Google+ integration over Twitter (or possibly Facebook?)

EDIT:Thanks for the invite :D

Having never been a fan of Facebook my first impression is that its almost exactly the same as it.

I checked it out after receiving an invite, but since then it holds no further appeal to me (in the same way that Facebook doesnt either).

This is what I like. I stopped using FB because my damn relatives found me. Now I can choose who sees what.

You actually can do that on FB with groups but it is not at all obvious that you can and the interface to do it is clunky at best.. and many people don't even know it is there.

I expect we will see FB give their groups interface and implementation a facelift in the very near future.

I am on G+ but very few other people are. The limited invite things worked well for something like gmail since it let people feel exclusive, but exclusive and a social network don't work well. I played around with it some after I got my invite and enjoyed it, but with so few people on it I find myself checking it less and less everyday and rapidly losing interest. Not similar to a web forum that has no new posts for days on end.. at some point you stop checking.

I dont think greed can every be applied to google as pretty much everything they do is free.
I know, I know, they make money from the ads, but really, you sit on a PC for Xnumber of hours a day, its not like using a service from google instead of a service from FB makes any difference to you. I don't think of it as Google being greedy, i think they are simply giving users et another option.

um. you really are naive if you think Google or any corporation does ANYTHING out of any motive other than making more money. "...giving users another option" -- REALLY?? What purpose would that serve? They want MONEY - just like Apple, Facebook, and every other corporation. And NO, their services are NOT free. They require personal information to sign up, and they gather much more personal information from your usage of their services. They in turn, sell you to advertisers - either by targeting ads based on your profile or by outright selling your profile.

Please don't attribute altruism to a corporation - nothing could be further from the truth.

Well how do you expect services like this to be free?? On the other hand...if your paying for something then it should be at a premium, no ads no commericals, secure data, etc.

On the business side of things, Social networks are nothing more then a giant advertising audience.

I don't expect them to be free. That's my point. I was pointing out that they are NOT free. It's just like filling out a contest entry form - why would someone give away a "free" car or whatever? Because the personal data they get on the entry form is worth more $$$ than the prize they give. And yes, having the option to pay for a service without ads is one I would choose every time. But you'd be surprised how many people would sell their brain (i.e. attention) to advertisers for as little as $25 (e.g. Kindle "with Special Offers" vs. standard Kindle)

Invite request

I'm looking for the type of privacy feature G+ has to offer.

I would appreciate it if someone can forward me an invite:

zaphodtheprez at gmail dot com

Cheers

Not enough people on there yet, and the lack of third-party apps means I can't be too involved in it.

So, atm, boring.

Hmm, I'm sceptical about Google+, my main problems with Facebook are it's insular environment and harvesting of user data. I just don't see how Google+ can be any different.

That said, I'm open to giving it a go!

If anyone has any invites I'd be a grateful recipient :) mikey [dot] j [dot] clarke [at] gmail [dot] com

It will still probably harvest your info, but you will have more control over who sees it. Just with how they implemented it (and honestly I trust Google over FB), I feel more secure that when I tell Google I only want my friends to see a status, only my friends will see it. I've never trusted FB from the get go that what I post won't some how end up public (and I got on FB before all the privacy freaking out.. just something about how flakey it was or interface just had something in me prickle that I shouldn't trust it).

That's a standard clause on all sorts of photo sharing sites (Twitpic also picked up some media attention recently for having the same thing in their ToS, for example).

As for Google+ monitoring your usage for ads, it lets you opt out of that when you register, which is more than I can say for Facebook.

Now I've been on G+ for a bit longer, and am building up more connections, I'm starting to warm to it. The web app works very well on my iPhone, too, though the basic one it shows on my BlackBerry is near enough useless.

Not for all but yes for twiptpic and for that, I opt not to use it or just not post things I find important to it.

If anyone can spare an invite it will be greatly appreciated...

Thanks in advance for your time!

No, longer need one.
