So basically this is what Apple implemented in iOS 10 back in 2016, 5 years ago?

Following apples lead!
You really add very little to these conversations. Its very obvious you hate Apple. You have yet to prove anything you say about Apple and how they track you as Google does yet you continue to make post after post alluding to this. Move on already. There are MS and Google forums all over the internet.

Alright Mister Zuckerberg, where is your outrage now? Already buying page-sized ads in the Washington Post and New York Times to cry about how Facebook is helping small business owners and how Google is now going to destroy this with the anti-tracking feature?

Probably not, you hypocritical *beeeeeeeeeeep*

I’m glad to see Apple causing change in the market. It’s one thing to change iPhones that’s only a small percentage of the worlds phone but to force Google to make this change affects a huge majority

I don't. I get a laugh at everyone claiming google is the devil, however apple does the exact same thing and everyone is fine with it. There is no difference. I use an iPhone. it's not because of the extra security of my privacy. It was due to polish of the OS, which, has now gone down the crapper as Tim and co. are only worried about their beloved money. The truth hurts. Prove apple doesn't, other than their marketing rhetoric. which means zero. They tell their min....I mean users exactly what they want to hear so Apple can collect the greenbacks. Simple. They are NO BETTER THAN GOOGLE. It is just they are back handed about it.

Just a funny coincidence.

Instagram isn’t listening in the background to you or me or anyone in dozens or hundreds of languages, with zero effect on battery life, and it’s impossible for an app to get rid of the small “recording” dot.

Also, toggling off tracking has zero effect in Instagram’s ability to show you relevant ads based on accounts you follow, what posts you like and whatever information they already have on your profile.
It’s not a coincidence if it’s regularly occurring.

I’ve actually tested this with something I’ve never searched for on any app or web page. Never talked about it in my apartment.

I opened FB and other apps and said “I wish I had a robot lawnmower”. I did this for 2 days.

That weekend, I got an add for a battery powered lawnmower.

this was only done by voice. I never searched for a lawnmower because I never needed one.

A few days go by and decided to try another one. So I spoke about solar panels. Next day I get Ads on solar panel installation companies in my feed.

Again never searched for it.

I don’t know what app is listening. Maybe they found a way to listen using the same API as Siri does. Who knows.

I highly doubt getting ads of two products that don’t relate to me is coincidence.

it’s not like an ad came up for iPhone cases.

Google's approach here is far better than Apple's !
What? Apple has literally had this possibility since iOS 10, and still does via "Ask apps not to track", it's literally the same thing, it's just that Apple also has an option where individual apps actually can be allowed to track me.

People outside the tech bubble seem to understand and appreciate A LOT Apple’s anti-tracking push, much more than I was expecting. It’s quickly becoming a selling point.

Google have to begrudgingly react somehow.

An extraordinarily smart move on Apple's part, paying enormous dividends. Hat tip to TC.

How on earth an ad selling company, can make a private system?

They will just shut the competition out, because they will still be able to collect user information.

The average person really doesn't care overally though.

Nice, so Google will put the anti-tracking into a paid plan presumably. While for Apple users the anti-tracking is free of charge! How much are Android users gonna pay? Any indications yet.

Google already collects enough data on users to be able to fingerprint them without the use of an IDFA on the user's devices. This would be a win-win for them because it would allow them to pretend that they care about privacy while still doing evil to their users behind their backs.

I am almost disappointed by the lack of Apps that I am using that seem to have tracked me that way before due to the lack of pop ups I am receiving compared to the specific ads I always get. Instagram is still as specific with ads as before which is down right creepy. Yesterday I was meeting a friend with our dogs outside and my friend was mentioning how he is on his 50 day streak of learning spanish with duo lingo and just as I get home I am getting an ad for learning spanish in 30 days
You mentioned your issue right in your post: Instagram (Facebook). I was reading something a while back about a security issue where Instagram and possibly other Facebook apps if given permission to access your photos, mic etc. the ads are much more targeted because it will always listen. I you want to check - disable all the access rights you have given Instagram and have your friend so the same.

Every time I see an Android phone I really want (to try something new), I remind myself that I'm not willing to sell my soul to Google so they can predict my entire existence. Moving away from Google to Duckduckgo makes me sleep better at night
I agree completely. I have no Google or Facebook apps on any of my devices. I have also opted to pay for a private email to limit google's reach on me. I still have to use Google for work, but my personal stuff is out of their hands.

Too little too late. I've started letting going of Google services as they've soured, and I know I'm not alone. My most recent switch is is moving to DuckDuckGo. It isn't quite as good results but it is a better product and company overall because of how it treats its users. The next one will be gmail. This will probably be the hardest of the bunch and is gonna take some research.

For all the caterwauling from Google and Facebook about customers being harmed by Apple’s privacy push it looks they are resigned to their customer’s desire for it. But as others point out, neither Google nor Facebook have any street cred when they say they’re on board. Customer data is their business model, their profit engine, their reason for existing.

When Apple announced this, a bunch of Android nerds were posting about how "Google let you do this already".
I guess they weren't after all.

So let me, if you don’t mind, ask you about using DuckDuckGo as your search engine. Are results roughly on par with Google or are they a little in the sub par compared to Google but you’re fine with that because of the privacy. I tried them once a couple years back and I would get some weird results but maybe I need to try again and see how things work.

Google is an advertising company and the vast majority of you are probably using google services in your everyday workflow. I still am - because there’s no substitute for YouTube.

I’m not going to say this new option is perfect but we accept some level of tracking by the os regardless of who makes it.

So I’d just like to take this opportunity to say thanks to Google for at least giving me the option to turn off my advertising id to everything outside of the core Google ecosystem. I know google will keep selling targeted ads through them but at least you’ll be able to narrow down where your data is going.

This option has existed in android for a long time. So I’m not exactly sure what is ”new” here?
