Google Announces Plans to Allow Android Users to Opt-Out of Tracking Later in 2021

Google is an advertising company and the vast majority of you are probably using google services in your everyday workflow. I still am - because there’s no substitute for YouTube.

I’m not going to say this new option is perfect but we accept some level of tracking by the os regardless of who makes it.

So I’d just like to take this opportunity to say thanks to Google for at least giving me the option to turn off my advertising id to everything outside of the core Google ecosystem. I know google will keep selling targeted ads through them but at least you’ll be able to narrow down where your data is going.

I don't use Google for anything other than YouTube so I don't care that they know I look at funny cat videos. For everything else, they can piss right off.

Change is happening albeit slow. Non-tracking services are gaining traction like Protonmail, Tutanota, Brave Browser, Signal, DuckDuckGo, VPNs, Mastodon, F-Droid, LineageOS(Android)... There is already YouTube Alternatives like PeerTV, Odyssey and Theta project. Even Steam is working hard to port games to Linux and its working beautifully. There is a complete world out there, its happening but cooking on a slow fire.

Facebook's gold laying goose is Instagram which does not have a real alternative, there is nothing like it but there is an attempt. As for Facebook.com itself, I don't know if its still popular outside US or if its gaining or losing users.

I don’t know where the rumors of hesitancy are coming from—I would have expected Google to be delighted Apple gave them an excuse to do this. The key word in “third party tracking” is “third party.” Google makes Android.

“Excellent—no other company will be able to track Android users. Only we will. All the data is ours.”

and then they will sell it to the 3rd party and make even more money!!

I use all platforms besides MacOS. I use windows, linux, iOS, and android. Hell I even have a bb deivce floating around I use. I am no more worried about my activity or data being tracked. If you are worrying about that all day, you need to stop downloading shady apps and software, or visiting "certian sites". The regular user, will have no issues at all.
