I agree with the quoted post. I’m not lying to myself. How much time do you need to save that you can’t make a call yourself and, you know, talk to a real human. If someone calls me with a damn robot I hang up. Pure and simple! It cracks me up that folks think they’re so busy they can’t possibly do two things at once.
If you have to call somebody and you are running late and have a busy day ahead it is very useful. It might not happen often but it might where you don't have time to call to book a table past 9am once you're working so you set it for google assistant to do it at 9am there is certainly a market for that.

Or as said some just aren't good on the phone booking things such as a table for restaurants or even to book a takeaway.

What is this comparison?
I cook my own food ...And you really need a barber but to make an appointment to a restaurant you don't need some AI if you're able to do this.
I didn't know you're not able to make a simple call . Sorry.
You said to stop being lazy and find a restaurant or barber.

I hope you have never ate at a restaurant...else by your logic you're damn lazy.

With AI you can have it help to find a restaurant and other times find it yourself. Just because someone have AI find them a restaurant doesn't make them lazy.

Hmm... Duplex will be a good way to deal with people you don't want to talk to like robocallers, scamsters, telemarketers, etc. Google Voice with Hangouts already asks the caller to announce their name before ringing your phone so Google can expand on that with Duplex.

(profanity warning)

LMAO John is NOT getting any for a LONG while lol ;) This girl is going to roast his full name ... John better make like a tree and leaf the city ;)

ON the other hand ... MKD posted a serious realization that I had as well just forgot the term

Google Assistant's Duplex just passed the Turin test!!

God your arguments are....
I just gave a few examples...But in a larger scale people can become lazy and dumb. Stop replying please.

Guess there aren't too many tech fans on MacRumor. Any tech guy, or girl, that watched the video of Google's A.I. advancements and doesn't find it more that incredible is...

Oh, I don’t think there is any denying that this is an impressive display of AI.

Thing is - awesome technology alone doesn’t always result in a great end user experience. How many times have we seen a company present a great tech demo, only for the final product to bomb?

The way I see it, Google Duplex is a typical example of a product born out of an engineering-led culture. A product which is all about cool technology but completely forgetting about the human aspect. Such products get a lot of attention and praise at tech conferences and in the tech media but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will resonate with consumers who are more interested in the actual product experience.

Even as we speak, Google just announced that duplex will be pre-announcing to the recipient that it is a voice assistant, and fresh questions have surfaced with regards to the legality of deploying such technology in states with strict recording laws.

I don’t think Google has quite thought through the feasibility of Duplex here. There’s still a long way to go before this feature becomes available to the masses and I expect a great deal to change in response to feedback and user sentiment.

Don’t be surprised if the end product ends up being nothing at all like what was demoed earlier this week, or if it never gets to see the light of day due to some other concern about ethics popping up (anyone remember google glass?)

it takes about one sec to launch the app and use the google assistant. hardly an issue.

with sometimes how long it takes Siri to respond going into the app can sometimes be quicker anyway. you can also use google assistant on the lock screen widgets and just use Face ID to open the app without needing to click the app.

ordered a google mini from google today. was £10 off the retail price think arrives tomorrow.

Again - not hands free - when my phone is across the room or my hands are full with kids or wet from doing the dishes it is not more convenient.

Well surely in this situation having a google mini for example would be better use than your phone anyway?

You can still get the google home.

Mine came today. I’m impressed with it. I can make phone calls with it and I can just tell it to play a show and it will automatically start playing on my chromecast. I can also tell it to play YouTube videos and it will automatically play them on my chromecast. It even auto switches if I have it on another input.

I’ve thought about it - we will see what Apple has in store with WWDC first though.

What I really want to see is all these ecosystems giving up some control. Like Apple allowing Spotify, or google allowing Apple Music (which is what we use). I could care less about it making phone calls for me (although I admit it’s amazing). What I really want is for the interactions with Siri to seem more natural. Maybe let me change the trigger... drop the “hey” requirement... support ongoing conversation (as the google home does).

There are things that all the smart speakers don’t have that is super irritating.

Seriously Google... no native to-do list?

Apple... no multi-user support?

The products all just need to mature and at the current rate it seems as if Google is making headway and Apple has fallen way behind.

Turns out that the plan for their AI call bot is to record all phone calls. I suppose it’s another method of data mining for Google. I don’t think it’ll ever stop.

You were expecting a company whose job is to mine to do the opposite?

It’s their nature. Just like in the tale of the scorpion and the toad. A scorpion must sting. A scorpion which doesn’t is useless.

Haha a vague article assuming that Apple may or may not give up contacts investigated by police? Yea I don’t think that’s nearly the same as creating an AI bot to replace human conversation so that you can collect more data about its users and speech. Even so, if you’re okay with Google’s approach, it sounds like Apple is doing no harm. You guys grasp at anything.

I’m more so surprised that people aren’t creeped out by a company who’s sole purpose is to gather human data for advertising.

Siri is so far behind here it’s not even funny. How could Apple let it languish for so long? It should worry Apple when someone like Rene Ritchie tweets this:
Yeah, that dude is super apple apologist. The fact he is being openly critical of Apple is really surprising to me. He not only chugs the Apple Kool Aid--he's a Kool Aid dealer.

Who is Rene Ritchie?
The biggest Apple Apologist in the world. I don't think that statement is an exaggeration, either. It's truly shocking how in the tank he is for Apple.
