PWA isn't proprietary and I find it hard to believe they wouldn't have had to have added it anyways. Don't know anything about bluetooth controller in browser support, but I know USB access has been in the works for some time... other browsers already support it.
no, not proprietary at all. I'm sure you'll find more info in the articles on apple helping amazon with their game streaming luna service.

I'm surprised that Apple didn't want a piece of the revenue, now the gamers will flee elsewhere. Sounds like Apple is underestimating gaming again. Gaming led to the downfall of the Mac, it could pull the rug out from underneath the iPhone.

Why should Apple allow other companies to use their platform to market their competing platform. It’s like Target putting up a tent in the Walmart parking lot selling their wares to people coming to Walmart
Apple Arcade is a joke, not a competing platform. Cook is delusional if he thinks otherwise, like McDonals were considering fine dining as a competition.

This will only push web apps to be more powerful, which is a good thing but not good for Tim’s cooks indoor dolphin marina
I just don't see how running javascript bloatware in browsers is better than having native apps. One of the biggest reasons I've waited for Apple Silicon was getting rid a handful of browser tabs on desktop too. Sadly a lot of companies opted out not to loose their cross-site spy cookies.

Serious question -- why does it matter? Having used GeForce Now this morning, I can't tell the difference. What do you think an app would add to the experience?
The same thing an app adds to every experience. We could all just use web apps. But apps are better richer experiences.

Come on Apple - let Playstation Now on.

...Target does have mini-stores in them for specific makeup brands and the like.

IIRC, Samsung, Apple, and Microsoft all have agreements with Best Buy to have mini stores within the best buy store too.

There is where progressive web apps come in to play.

And it's not a matter of apple letting playstation now on, playstation now doesn't even support mobile period. Sony only supports it on playstations on PC. And pulled support from other devices.

For the same reason that Apple allows Netflix, Amazon, Spotify, and a million other third-party apps on iOS? Great app support sells more iOS devices.

... and then giving them 30% of the proceeds? I don't think Walmart would mind!
The problem is that Walmart won‘t be getting the 30% in that analogy. This is like Target setting up a shuttle in a Walmart parking lot. Game streaming means no revenue for Apple because users won’t be buying through Apple.

Hope it works well. Really bummed I don't get "native" Xbox Game Pass streaming via an App, but better via web app than not at all. :/

More great news for Apple Arcade ... Apple really needs to step it if they hope to keep it afloat.
Apple Arcade seems like such a different target demographic than Xbox Game Streaming, Luna or Stadia. The latter are all targeted at much more intensive games than Apple Arcade (apart from some gems like Pathless).

If you think that analogy is accurate then we need to reassess critical thinking, its easy but doesn't account for the myriad of nuances between a physical retail business and modern digital platforms.

These analogies always make me giggle. Generalized rhetoric rarely passes the logic test. Apple/Google would be nothing like Targe/Walmart in your scenario. Google has over 70 apps on the App Store. The some of the most popular ones actively compete with Apple's apps. The App Store also hosts apps from other Apple competitors like MS and Samsung.

Tried to code a quick PWA once. Damn, there are so many limitations. Support of PWA isn't there as of yet.
So, can't wait to see Apple roll back support for PWA instructions in Safari 😁! Would be so "funny" to watch Nvidia, Google and Microsoft yelling at Apple, especially considering that the whole idea of a PWA was introduced by... Apple years ago, before the App Store.

I think it's great that Safari has gotten to a point where this is possible. I also think its stupid that Apple has these restrictions so companies have to go this route.

How so? The App Store is owned by Apple for the purpose of making money selling apps. What you're proposing would like you showing up at a McDonalds and asking to set up a hot dog stand in their dining room.

If Apple would just allow everyone to put apps in the App Store without all of the silly nanny, and anti-competitive rules, Apple would make even more money. But no, we have to have Apple megalomania.

Anyone can put apps on the App Store. What they can't do is put their own app store inside the App Store.

Apple's prohibition on streaming services needs to end. Why is streaming games via Stadia any different to streaming movies and TV shows on Netflix or Amazon Prime? And they can be used via the web, but not a first-class app that would provide a better user experience? So silly!

Does Apple require Netflix to submit all their content for approval? I don't think so.

Content and code are not the same thing. And even if they were, it's Apple's store.

because if developers don't use their platform, neither will the developer's users. I'd like to see how well Apple iPhones would sell if the only apps you could run on them were Apple's own apps.

If Apple allowed end users to install Apps outside of the App store, then you might have a point.
Welcome to the future of MacOS, one release at a time.

lol It’s always these kind of comments whenever someone brings up Apple’s stupid rules concerning game streaming apps.
True, but there is a point that this leads to. Apple should be able to control and regulate their market as they choose. Market owners in the physical world are allowed to set rules on what vendors may sell and how they may sell it. The difference is that there are multiple markets in the physical world. So he’s right. It isn’t the market that is the issue it is apple’s control of the platform and prohibiting other markets.
