If this thing is not as fast as it would take me to do a google search via the iphone web browser or via the google search app, then it would be only useful to blind people with brail iphones.
Well, I think it could come in handy if you're driving (using some form of headset / earbuds, of course), or even if you're walking (especially for those of you in the city with busy sidewalks).

Actually, if it can translate good enough, it will just save us from having to type when we have long questions / search queries. Now, if they can just work out some of the entry options (not, and, plus, minus, quoted, etc...)

Combine this with a translator and we're good to go! Maybe google translate for trips and whatnot.

I downloaded an App called "Free Translator" and it works really well. It sends the text you type to Google's website, and then sends you the translated version. But I get what you are saying ... if it could be "voice," it would be awesome. I agree! THEN IT WOULD INCLUDE PRONUNCIATION!!!!!;):D:cool:

Because Google is an advertising company and apple has 10 Million for now (30 million next year depending on economy) pairs of eyeballs they can put their ad links next to. (google phone MIGHT get to a half a million this year. might.)

and also because the iPhone is popular inside google.

Bingo. Google does not make the G1. HTC makes the G1. Google is a software and advertising company. It doesn't matter to them whether it's on the G1 or the iPhone. Google wants to reach as many people as possible and gain market share.
With ten million iPhones and far fewer G1 phones, the iPhone is clearly the more valuable medium to Google. The more people they can reach, the more advertising they can sell, and the more data mining they can accumulate. Most valuable is that Google already has the statistics of what the average person uses Google search for the most on the iPhone. What percentage of the time are people searching for restaurants and businesses, and what percentage of the time is the average user searching for non-commercial info? Google knows that! And Google will use those statistics to further improve current products and create new products in the future. Microsoft and Yahoo are far behind Google in this area. And Google has ten million iPhone users feeding them data every single day.

Hmmm. Interesting. Does Google Talk support sending pictures in addition to its texts?

*Goes to repeatly search "Google Talk, MMS, iPhone" over and over again*

And they also often know the location from which each search originated. So they can target and charge for ads according to what's popular in a certain area.

In the license that everyone agreed to when you accepted Google Maps on the iPhone or touch, is a clause saying that Google can even track and display all searches in realtime.

Knowledge is power.

All the news stories seem to be saying it'll be available in 'US English' only, this better be available in the UK at launch as well!!

I really like the idea of this app and you can't beat free. I hope it gets released soon. They were all speculating this past Friday for some reason.

Thanks Flowb, but that's the other video. The more official looking one from Google is the one I was looking for again. I did manage to catch it, but when I returned to show a friend it was gone.

Here's a screenshot that was captured (scroll down): iPhone: Has Google lost its voice?

The video in question was a little more specific and demonstrated more of how the GPS functionality worked in searches.

New from the link above: "UPDATE: Still no Google Voice Search, and now no video either. Sorry about that. When I ask my iPhone when voice search will be available, it just stares at me blankly." :D

EDIT: Found: Google Mobile App for iPhone, now with Voice Search

Ahhh... I hadn't seen that one. My bad.

Is it just me or is it kinda funny that Google releases these Apps for the iPhone yet not for their own Android..

Google Earth - available for the iPhone but not android

Google Mobile App - available for the iPhone but not android

I figured developing for a competitor platform would be low on the priority and developing on your own would be much more important.. hmm guess not.

stop complaining... google has done a lot for the iPhone and I for one don't want it to stop.

Word going around is that it's been rejected by Apple because of some problems while on a call?
