Pretty sure nobody has yet died from being afraid of the virus.
The reality is the deaths are very limited. Of course it’s awful if anyone has to die, but we are talking about business operations.

There is real money being lost and potentially huge economic impact from the media creating a frenzy over something that is frankly not going to “get” you And if it does, you’ll mostly likely recover just like the flu.

Too many unknowns and the statistical data is still coming in, and changing daily. It might be nothing.

You can't say that without knowing the danger of the virus.

It's Russian roulette, and nobody knows (yet) how many bullets are in the chambers.
It could be far less dangerous than the seasonal common flu, or more fatal than 1918 Spanish Flu (check the number of deaths from that one).

I'd rather be fearful than dead (or alive in a city with 100k dead neighbors).
There Is no evidence it is impacting people anywhere near the levels of the Spanish flu, which killed young people and people of all ages, including healthy individuals.

Would you go to a Major League Baseball game if you knew that 1,200 people in the stands would randomly be selected and shot?

Because that’s the odds of dying from this if you catch it (at least based on the best currently-available data).

I don't think Apple can hold WWDC now even if they wanted to. With both Facebook and Google canceling their events, it would be bad optics for them from a PR perspective.

Particularly if people ended up getting/spreading cases of CV there..

Blessing in disguise..

If I'm Tim, now is the time to internally pivot and make 2020 the year of doubling down on polishing up all existing major software releases.

The end result of all this: companies will suddenly realize they don't need to host conferences! And there will be much rejoicing.

Sony seems to agree ... they brought their A game in abscence of CES2020.

Why? Why on earth would you think that?

A lot can happen between now and June ... or in March and April. And if this pandemic drops significantly ... those rental fees would be considerably cheap at the crest of such an announcement.

Alternatively if no spike in this situation ... and Apple can safely hold the WWDC it may send awareness of safety and strength about Apple.

You’re extrapolating based on some very early small numbers and you’re also not accounting for healthy individuals not being impacted in the same way.

Your analogy makes no sense because it ignores those critical factors.

The most respected doctor on viruses has said mortality rates would likely fall if the disease infected more people and/or if we even knew all the people infected. It’s currently skewed because of a small denominator and bias toward killing compromised people.

Are Google IO and Facebook’s conference as big or important as WWDC?

Yet Disneyland remains open
Why wouldn’t it?

Disney World is open too.

You guys, the country is still operational. The cases in the US are extremely limited. You can’t stop all commerce because of this and Disney isn’t the only travel destination here. If you want to stop it, the only thing you can really do is ban flying into the country.

Why should Disney close with no cases reported?

I believe it's Di$$$neyland

...and thus we have our answer.. lol
They would be closed if the risk were anything near serious.

They should be open just like any travel destination.

Vegas is open too and so is your local Walmart. Stay in your house if you’re so worried, but it’s hard to shut down all forms of gathering.

Your facts are true. Your premise that it “makes no sense” is false - these are the only numbers we have. Everything else is conjecture.

Very few would get their Android update anyway... they should just hold IO every 5 years lol

Globally the annual death toll from car crashes is 1.25 million. There are so many other things that can kill us in far greater numbers. Chill people.

As of today the NAB Show in Vegas is still scheduled for April 18-22

This may be the next show to be cancelled though. People already get "conference crud" at the various shows in Vegas anyway. I bet attendance this year will be lower than normal (if the show happens)

One exhibitor has pulled out of NAB so far.

You can greatly reduce your risk of dying in car crashes by using a seatbelt, driving carefully, obeying driving laws, and driving less.

Can’t do much about this virus.

I’ve given a keynote at a worldwide virtual conference. No, it’s not as fun, no you don’t get to travel, but it gets the message out and the costs are low.

You would think Google had a way to pull it off too.

They could roll out yet another communications app for that purpose :)

It’s also a fact the numbers can’t be extrapolated for good reasons. You’re right. The numbers we have show there is nothing to worry about. It’s very, very small. The graph actually show it leveling off.

The deaths aren't all equal In terms of indication of severity. If you’re elderly, that detail matters.

The reason the spread is leveling off is precisely because people are cancelling gatherings, restricting travel, etc.

You can’t say “it’s harmless because it’s leveling off, so let’s all pretend nothing is happening” when the only reason it is leveling off is because people are taking it seriously.

Sorry. Mistaking absence of evidence for evidence of absence is a rookie statistics error. Occasionally a fatal one.
I mean, anything could happen. The question is what is reasonable. I don’t have the answer, but I could say this will be the worst thing ever and you can’t prove me wrong.

Maybe? I’m not advocating reckless abandon, but this isn’t materializing into what the media screams about. I’ve listened to countless talking heads say the virus can’t be contained and all efforts are too slow, too late, and not enough. Not even close to everything has been cancelled.
