The latest version of the Google Chrome browser designed for Macs includes optimizations that are designed to preserve battery life. In a blog post shared today, Google says that with a single full charge, a 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro running Chrome can be used to browse the internet for 17 hours or watch YouTube for 18 hours.

With improvements to Energy Saver mode, browsing time is extended for another 30 minutes by reducing unnecessary background tasks, and while Google uses the M2 MacBook Pro as an example, the company says that those using older Macs will also see performance gains.

To boost battery life, Google made changes that include tuning iframes to consume less energy, tweaking JavaScript timers to wake the CPU less often, streamlining data structures to optimize access, and eliminating unnecessary redraws.

Google plans to continue to optimize Energy Saver mode in the future. The Chrome browser for Macs can be downloaded from Google's website, with the 110 version released last week.

I was playing around with my Google Pixel 7 Pro the other day and discovered this feature:

It’s an awesome feature! I enabled it and it immediately gave me a quote of 19 1/2 hours of battery life!

It basically disables every single app, unless you have applications on a preset list with the ability to reenable applications when you need to use them, and it has a timer where it disables background activity after a certain timeframe, which is around three minutes

it would be awesome if Apple brought this feature to both the iOS, iPadOS and MacOS

I pretty much only use a few applications on a regular basis and is feature is so useful to me that I am pretty much going to always use it
I thought we have a Low Power Mode from Apple. Isn't it the same thing? 😙

We do need Low Power Mode on Mac OS.

18 hours of streaming of YouTube several days a week? I'm sure their ISP will throttle them or charge them when they hit a usage limit. 😂

I don't love Chrome as I actually think Edge is more advanced these days but man I am starting to worry at the level of Apple software lag in terms of modern features. Looking at AI, Siri, iOS, iPad OS, and even Ventura it looks to me like Apple is constantly focusing on silly stuff like Animojis while ignoring what people actually want and request.

Good thing for Apple Android is in a terrible state right now.

What some people actually want and request is Animoji’s.

Chrome's Energy Saver mode kicked in today for the first time (I hit 20% battery life, so it got activated automatically...) which was super annoying because the 4K video I was watching got incredibly laggy then. I turned it off immediately.

Then there’s me who doesn’t want to switch from Safari. LOVE the syncing between all of my devices and the privacy.
Orion by Kagi offers Safari with Chrome and FF extensions. I am still awaiting on a response of iCloud backup/sync is end-to-encrypted and stored. Safari has only recently gained this ability if advanced security has been turned on.

I wonder what this means for M1s? My dilemma is that I prefer the customization of Firefox and esp. being able to download from YouTube. I tried the Foxified extension with Brave but it didn't work. Brave to me is faster (not as fast as Safari) and has some customization. The biggest problem I have with Safari is the terrible lack of customization esp. no themes. I'm curious though if these tweaks to Chrome would carry over to Brave.

Still very unimpressed with the scrolling performance of Chrome on ProMotion Macs. It's very jittery. It does seem to be worse with uBlock Origin running, but without it running, it also stutters on every ad it loads.

It already exist. https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/change-battery-settings-mchlfc3b7879/mac
There is also an option to only play SDR video on HDR compatible Macs to save even more battery.
