No, but you do have to buy the paint brush...

Look, this is all settled in courts. If apple et all are actually wrong and unfairly using patents, that'll come out in court. Acting as if somehow apple is evil for following the judicial code is absurd. If google is right, they have no reason to worry. By the sounds google has been making publicly, they don't sound too confident they are right and instead are hoping to paint other companies as evil for following the law.

Exactly...apple is protecting their patents and google and the oems are whining about being attacked...gimme a break. Pay or don't play

Just a little fact for you. Google is an advertising, search engine company. This is where their profit comes from.
You realize that Google knows more about you than your mom. Yeah, you're not paying money to Google but rather paying your private information that Google uses for their algorithms. Google is just using you as a piece of DATA. Little wake up call.

uh, why even be on the internet? the moment you are online, your identity is exposed. all this 'they're using you for DATA' is a) duh b) who cares?

everyone is already on facebook getting all their personal data being given to 3rd party entities.

if thats the excuse that the Apple fankids are saying now, its a weak argument. it just further demonstrates why i trust Google's business model (there is no interest for them to sell hardware, they just want you to be online searching for stuff via google/voice search).

In essence, Apple will stagnate innovation for the sake of $$$. They want as many of their devices to be sold as possible. And why wouldn't they? They are a publicly traded company, and make huge margins / device! Their interest ultimately lies with their shareholders, not the end user.

Now Google is publicly traded company as well, and make $$$ through ads. Yet they consistently provide a lot of free productivity driven applications as long as they can place miniscule ads on their products.

Still, nobody has answered my original question. At all. Nobody even tried to answer it, which was, what products does Apple bring to the table to end users that are free?

personal anecdote: my mobileme account was compromised. I had multiple unauthorized transactions to my PayPal. This is not a minor issue, neither.

iCloud, updates to iOS, iLife, and find my phone to name a few.

If you don't want apple to make money off you, dont buy their hardware. If you don't want google to make money... Don't use the Internet? I'm not following how apple is the scarier company here.

Also, google knows way more about you than what follows from "logging on the Internet". They know what you purchase, where, what time, what you were looking at beforehand, etc. and so forth. This is a wealth if information that not everyone is comfortable with, even if you are.

Also, not everyone is on Facebook. Many choose not to use it, some for privacy reasons.

What is this suppose to mean????

"Patents were meant to encourage innovation, but lately they are being used as a weapon to stop it."

From what I've been taught is Patents are meant to protect the inventor from getting their technology ripped off. But lately, the tactic by companies are steal what you want and wait to be sued. Then fight like hell to see if you can get the patent dismissed or negotiate a better rate.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

ah, finally someone answers my question. not like it was a trick question or anything.

updates to iOS seriously? that should be a given that its free. charging for OTA updates LOL. Although I wouldn't have been surprised if Apple did something like this if there was NO competition at all. Fortunately there is though, and the users are benefiting.

iLife costs money. its $49

iCloud (only 5GB free, Google has something in the magnitude of 25GB+ iirc)

find my phone isn't really a product, but a feature within the iPhone. This would only be useful if you bought an iPhone.

You buy the iOS upgrade like you would buy a Mac OS upgrade. Or should I have gotten Leopard free after Tiger?

That's a cop out. Go to an Android forum and say you agree with Apple and see what happens.

Here's a thought, support your opinion with an argument and have an intelligent debate.

I don't own any Android products, so I don't frequent Android forums. Intelligent debate is not possible on most forums other than with a handful of users. If anyone here offers the least bit of criticism of Apple, they are a hater and a troll. It happens multiple times a day by regular users. If I say I wish Mac's had flash the response will be, who uses flash? Flash is useless, etc etc. If I say I want BluRay on my Mac, the answer will be, BluRay sucks, optical media is dead, just by the content from iTunes, etc etc. If I say a professional laptop should have a fingerprint reader option, the response will be, fingerprint readers are useless, no business uses them, they provide no security, etc, etc.

Does that make it any clearer? That is what goes on here 24/7. Oh, and the response to that will be, if you don't like it, go to a different forum. Don't post here if you don't agree, etc etc. Pathetic, actually.

Explain this to me

If you tell an Apple-hater that Apple has innovated somewhere, they'll treat you with scorn. The iPhone wasn't new, Nokia did it before, besides, the Blackberry is way better, etc., etc. Then, two years later, it appears that everyone in the world is imitating this very crappy phone, well, it turns out to be right. If it wasn't new, and very cool, why did it sell? Why is everyone copying it?

I don't know where I stand on software patents. Some of them seem absurd, and yet, without patents to protect genuine innovations, won't the tech world become a realm of copiers? If you only make money on an invention for a year or so, why not join the copiers? Why on earth would anybody take a risk like the iPhone or iPod or iPad? Each of those went through the gauntlet, and each one created a new reality. I think, within limits, Apple has a right to a certain amount of exclusivity for some period. Another company can invent their own stuff, and have it to themselves.

You don't want to make patents too exclusive, but I don't think that I want them to go away, either. What the Japanese did in the tech market was begin by copying, slavishly. But they started innovating with Sony, Honda and Toyota. Is it time for Google to correct their business model?

When apple announced the iPhone, it looked and worked different than any other phone ever built. Now most phones look as close to an iPhone as possible.

Then 18 months ago they announced the iPad, which was ulike any tablet computer ever. Now the whole industry is scrambling to build something as close go what apple has done as possible.

But I guess they haven't invented anything?
You'll have to be more specific. Are you talking about hardware or software? Because hardware wise, the iPad is a rectangle. Are other tablets supposed to be circular or hexagonal so as not to be an ipad clone? Should they be thicker? Should they have less desirable screen sizes? The same goes for the iPhone. You can ooh and ahh over minor form factor changes between iPhone generations but then turn around and say that most phones these days look the same as the iPhone?

If you mean software, there isn't much outside of Android for tablets atm. I know HP has some WebOS ones coming out or are out recently, but isnt WebOS the go to OS for what a non iOS clone looks like?

No one says it was a crappy phone. It was a good phone for the time with excellent marketing behind it. People say Nokia did it before when Apple fanboys go on about how Apple is so innovative and how they invented the smartphone and now everyone just copies or makes minor changes.

There is so much straw in this post it should be sitting in a barn. Tell us more about the imaginary conversations you have with Apple people. I asked you last time, got nothing.

Sorry, but it's pretty clear you're here for one reason, which is why people tell you to go to another forum. Your version of intelligent debate is to insist Apple users are sheep and anyone who disagrees is a sheep by default. You bring the same anti-Apple user cliches to the table in every post.

I'm betting you frequent plenty of Android forums. Spare us.

Anyone who thinks Apple plays a fair game is a clown. I own all Apple computers, but if they don't show consideration for anyone but themselves soon, that will be coming to an end.

Why should they? They aren't in business to make other companies profitable. What exactly have they done other than being a profitable company for their share holders?

There's a reason why they are in the position they are and it isn't because they helped their competition.

and how is that a bad thing? apple innovated the smartphone but i dont see what's so bad about other companies taking the idea. i love having different touch phones to chose from. the iPhone sales show that it doesnt really hurt them anyway.

Really? Did you see the options before Apple came on the scene? Let's see, we had Palm phones (great idea, but in reality they were a crappy phone AND a crappy palm), WinMo phones (sucked in every way period), and blackberries.

Then Apple innovated the $#!t out of the phone, and killed in the market.

Then Google copied.

Then Apple got tired of Google raining piss all over them, so Apple got up and did something about it. Good for Apple, and I hope Google pays dearly.

I think people who forget how abysmal the "smart" phone market was pre-Apple should be forced to use one of the pre-iPhone handsets for the next 15 years. Have fun with your silly styli, constant reboots, QVGA camera, and 240px sucky touch-screen. Remember the days when carriers charged PER KILOBYTE for data, because the phones sucked ass so bad for browsing the internet?

Yeah, good luck posers.

Let's assume for a minute that you're a professional artist. You create a very nice painting. I take a picture of it and start selling postcards with your painting on the back.

Would you show me some "consideration" and not sue me?

And the brush you painted with is an Apple iBrush, so you have to give Apple 30% of the painting's earnings.

Then don't buy the iBrush.

I've gotta agree here. Yeah there were "smartphones" before the iPhone, but are people really trying to downplay or deny how revolutionary of a product the iPhone was?? It changed what the word "smartphone" meant and it has created, to this very day a slew of so-called "iPhone killers" all of which have fallen ridiculously short of even putting a dent in the iPhone.

Google stole IP and infringed on patents. There's no ifs ands or buts about it, and all indications point to the courts agreeing with that. Google is in trouble, and fandroids are in full-on denial mode about this because Schmidt says "I'm not worried" and cuz Google is "getting fired up" about the patent trolls (the fandroid's new buzzword).

I don't own any Android any products and I don't even read Android forums. So you are wrong. Sorry. The stuff I referred to in my previous post goes on here a dozen times a day and even the most ardent Appleonians can't deny that. Or maybe you don't read much of what is posted here?

Funny all of the Appleonians never bring up any of my posts in the non news forums or ever mention the Apple products I praise in the news forum, but then again, that's typical of so many here. Disagree, and you are a troll and hater. Priceless.

There is a big difference between someone who likes and uses Apple products and sheep/fanboys. The difference is quite obvious.

The arguments are funny and have nothing to do with anything.

Bottom line... Google thought they we're worth a lot of money but lost the bid. If Google would have won the bid I don't think they would have just sat back and admire their purchase. I think they would have been knocking on doors in Redmond and Cupertino in no time.

Has nothing to do with Google vs Apple, or even Microsoft... it just sounds like sour grapes to me.

Just another day @ Fanboy central; how predictably tedious...

It's software, nothing more. Get a grip.

Welcome to the internet. There's fanboys everywhere, man. Why are you so shocked by this? If you go on a Fandroid forum you'll see the same thing. Stop being so affected by this.

81 people disagree with your statement, but i not one of them. Im with a blackberry right now as i wanted to get way from apple. It is quickly becoming the evil person it was so against in its 1980 tv ad. Unfortunately Mr Jobs has made the whole apple work very difficult to get away from so i'll probably be back with an iphone to go with my macbook pro, but im under no illusion that apple would try something like this. Look at how much iphone and the mobile business is worth to them. We can't honestly say that not having any competition is going to be good for the gadget we all like.

Its funny how its the exact same thing except the companies names are swapped. Waste of time really. Anyone notice youtube (off topic sort of) has like 90% + Android lovers? Not saying its bad or anything, Galaxy S2 would be my choice if iPhone 5 wasnt coming. Must be the demographic.

But I'm not. And I don't own any Android products.

Oh ok you just seem so surprised or shocked that there are fanboys here who get mad when you talk about Apple. It's the same on any site. I own an android phone and there are plenty of fanboy morons on android sites, just like there are on this site. It happens.

We're not hating you for not liking Apple but for attempting to justify that all of the people who dislike Apple competitors are sheep.
I find Bluray overpriced and useless, is that a problem? I prefer Thunderbolt to USB 3.0 for its video capabilities, is that a problem? It's very well justified, unlike your argument.

And FYI I do like Adobe, but I think that Flash is too buggy to be a common format. They're making an HTML5 editor, and I think that is a good move. I don't like Google because they only invented a better search a long time ago and nothing else after that. Trust me though, I hate some of Apple's formats like MiniDVI and the cursed slot-loading DVD drive on my iMac. A stupid HP disc got stuck in it.

You are being too sensible and open minded, that doesn't work too well here.

I like my Mac OS and iPod Touch, is that a problem? It's very well justified, unlike your argument.

I have never once said that all people who like Apple products are sheep. There are Apple users here who are not sheep or fanboys. I know many IRL. I have also said many times here that OSX is a good OS. I stand by the comments I made.
