I'm sorry...am I supposed to feel sorry for Google, the gentle giant? Um, get real.

I agree that we need some patent reform for sure. Some ridiculous patents have been awarded. A one-click buy button? Really? A one-click upgrade/unlock button? Seriously?

That said, it's pretty hard to compete with someone who poses as a partner, sits on your board, then robs you blind and gives your work away for free under the guise of "open source" so they can sell your soul to their true customers, their advertisers. That is not cool and should not be allowed. That is not innovating, that's stealing.

I've used the new Samsung Galaxy IIs and it is a very nice phone. I like it. The Android OS that runs on it quite nice. It should be as it's pretty much a rip-off of iOS with some tweaks.

I have no problem with Android existing, competition is good, but if you're going to rip-off someone else's work, they should get compensated.

Anyone who thinks Apple plays a fair game is a clown. I own all Apple computers, but if they don't show consideration for anyone but themselves soon, that will be coming to an end.
Every company on Earth thinks of itself first and everything else second. Apple is not alone in this. You have to mad think otherwise.

Here is a great read that describes how Google courted Intel to join their side in bidding against the others. It also indicates that those who drop out typically back others who are still bidding -- this is not an organized effort against Android, but Google whining that they lost.

Couldn't have said it better myself..google needs to stop whining...they knowingly infringed and should pay...

The whole concept of "buying" a patent seems ridiculous to me. If Google files a patent and then Google ceases to exist, then the patent should be void. Just like if an individual inventor files a patent and then dies, the patent should be void.

Apple buying a patent is basically just them buying a licence to rip off Nortel's ideas. So why bother with the money?
I disagree. What if a patent holder invents something that is his families livelihood. Then he dies. How will the rest of the family support themselves. Without the patent everyone and his dog will clone it, if it's a good product. And potentially put the wife and kids on the street.

So dead people's patents still have a use. But dead companies patents. If they became void. Then it'd just be a race to re-patent them. Unless the law says you can't re-patent a void patent.

Are software patents completely broken?

Yes.

Do I trust Google to do the right thing and lobby for patent reform regardless of whether they find themselves entangled by software patents?

No, especially not after this "waaaa, we lost the bid that we didn't take seriously" post.

Google isn't taking patent reform seriously, they're just beating on the "Apple is Evil" horse to try to get them out of another jam. It's like how Apple kept beating the Mhz Myth back when the PPC chips were stagnating.

Well, they (google) should stop complaining and make Android a profitable OS for themselves. Hey they are the ones with the ANTI-competitive business strategy, giving away an operating system free!!! No matter how good iOS is, and it is infinitely better, there is no competing with free in terms of sales numbers. But look at profits, and you see why google is hurting. Apple makes what google makes (as a whole not just android) in a year in just one quarter. I hope there is a $300 OFF contract unlocked iPhone this september so Google can burn to the ground literally over night.

This thread is pointless, dull & circular. Why do we care about this crap?

Meanwhile, back in REAL life, people have REAL problems.

They didn't think it would be 4v1 against Apple, did they?
Glad to see Oracle is finally taking action against Android.

I know, Google is totally dumping. You can't give your stuff out for free to hurt other companies!

Stop being a parasite on Apple's ass ! and create your own damn OS without ripping someone off.
This really pisses me off !!

Oh come on, Apples entire business is based on what they ripped off Xerox back in the '80s.

Not exactly if you mean the Mac. They make more money off of iPods, iPhones, and iPads. And I wouldn't really call it a ripoff, Apple had the patent.

If Google wasn't using any patented items in Android, shouldn't they have nothing to worry about?

Apple had what patent? A look and feel?

Thanks for taking time out of your REAL life to post that.

That is why the companies are working hard to push Google out.

Google innovates search.... let them focus on that. Copying and "giving away" other people's work is not good for innovation or competition.

They don't innovate search. They did at first, but now they just buy stuff and give out free versions of old services. They don't innovate at all.

I used to like Google until I realized this.

Waaaa

Cry babies. They have copied everything to get to where they are. That is why all their crap is Beta.

Learn your history man! Apple didn't rip-off Xerox. Money and stock in Apple changed hands. They had an agreement. No question that Apple got the better end of the deal though. Apple wound up hiring many of the engineers so they could continue what they started. Xerox brass saw little value in the GUI. Big mistake.

Microsoft reverse engineered Mac prototypes when they were supposed to be developing Mac applications. They paid no one. Not Apple. Not Xerox.

I bet Google wouldn't feel the same way if Apple was infringing on it's search patents.

They wouldn't feel that way if they had won the bidding battle either.

1) Perhaps Google analysts should have worked a little harder on the math while the patents were still in play, it was certainly covered enough in the press and there was little doubt that Android might be the looser.
2) If Google thought the loss of the patents where a business killing threat why didn't they form their own block with their Android hardware partners?
3) Hilarious that Google is again trying to position itself as the underdog, while simultaneously promoting itself as the market share leader for mobile OS. I guess we are to buy into the corporate meme that when Google does something they are championing "freedom of ideas and technology, open markets and entrepreneurship," even whilst they lobby against net neutrality and call-in political favors at the FTC.
4) If Android incorporates Novell-IP, how is it that Google's got away without paying for it this long? In representing and distributing Android OS licenses as the IP of Google while knowing it exploits unlicensed Novell patents haven't they mislead hardware and software developers building on the Android platform? Wouldn't there be some sort of legal liability in this sort of misrepresentation?

I bet Google wouldn't feel the same way if Apple was infringing on it's search patents.

It seems you completely miss the point, along with thousands of apple fanboys.

Google's search patents were self-developed; not bought up by google from someone else, to stifle competition.

The blind apple support here on this forum makes for some hilarious reading!
