0.5 in billions seem like a small number. Let me convert that for you. A billion is one thousand millions, so half a billion is 500 million USD which is not an easy thing to digest. And for further analysis, a 0.5 increase on $4 billion is a 12.5% increase in price.

Additionally, it is up to these enterprises to study at what point paying a licensing fee becomes more profitable (or not) than dishing out such large quantities of money.

Or let me put it another way
$500 Million is piddly when the product you are selling generates revenue
Google insists on giving their product away for free because their revenue is from finding ways to push ads to your phone...

When you are in a capitalist economy and charge for your product, it becomes easier to justify paying larger amount for patents....

We do it because we can.

For the Apple fanboys defending their holy corporation;

Whats in it for you to be so obsessed with Apple's success? Unless you own Apple stocks, you shouldn't be so psychotically in love with Apple, or any other corporation. -=[blah, blah, troll, troll]=-

We do it because we can.

Any other questions?

Poor google got sand in its eyes, they only like fair fights when they can plan them behind closed doors to make sure they win. Anyone remember how Steve jobs made googleboy walk home from burning man after he told jobbo they where getting into the phone biz because he was sure they could win?

Next they should let the market fight it out, you know by selling copies of the competitions highlights: Dear apple, please invent some more stuff for us to re-invent.

So now they are cockblocked because they cheated, so sad. Poor google. As for anyone who thinks Apple doe snot play fair: Apple would have gone decades ago if they did not and you would be listening to your portable CD player and using a computer with 60 buttons for multimedia and a mouse with 12 buttons. No iPad or anything, no Windows 7. So they play whatever game they HAVE to to survive. If you don't understand it: come and work for some of these companies, they are all total bastards.

Google is as badass and cut through as any one of them, all they got is what they deserved.

He has no moral title to complain about good companies like Apple in this patent dispute, patents MUST be respected.

Nice bit of mud flinging there. If anything, it wasn't the Italian justice system's finest moment, was it?

Your apportioning of righteousness is also partial. Apple has been convicted for patent infringements several times already.

i actually agree with google, if every little thing gets a patent in the redic american system it will get nearly impossible to invent or improve existing ideas. an old apple slogan about why apple is the successful even said "taking existing ideas and making them better".

now let the "-" coming

Because Google is so honest, with it's snooping open wifi and copying ever book in creation. There were going to hold our library captive. Let's not forget Google's Double Irish/Dutch way of making sure they avoid US taxes. Sure Apple has issues too, but don't pretend Google does anything fair either.

How could anything Google does be bad? Their motto is "Don't Be Evil"!!! Clearly anything they do is Good by definition!! QED :p

Android is only successful in the iPhone clone space. Not in the iPad clone space. And why is that? Only 1.5% of Android running on iPad clones? Why only a roundoff-error share?

iPhone clone space lol. Of course, Apple created the very first smartphone. They also invented the RDF (reality distortion field) that you're currently riding high on. I'm no fanboy of any company, but you take the cake on fanboyism to the highest bidder.

Answer: because Eric Schmidt was shut out of all iPad discussions while he was on Apple's board. Schmidt stole ideas for iPhone and iPhone OS, as it was called back then, and told the Android team to radically change their design. iPad caught Schmidt and Google by surprise, and so far they show no signs of catching up.

If you don't recall, the original Android phones were ripoffs of BlackBerrys. iPhone's hardware and software were vastly superior, and Schmidt's corporate espionage helped Google mash up a quick and dirty iPhone clone. Without a proper Java license from Oracle. And that hastiness, which appears to be deeply embedded in Google culture, will cost them dearly.

Love how you make up stories. Please do give a link as to how Schmidt was 'shut out of' iPhone OS? We all know that he left the board of Apple, but you're going miles further with a lot of fluff you can't really substantiate.

When a company is 'patent trolling,' its an admittance of defeat, fear, and anti-innovative. The entire tech blogosphere LOATHES the patent system here in the U.S.

Google backdoor dealed their way into the phone business. Time to pay the piper.

Also nothing in this world is free as much as this guy and google wants to think it is. Those ads all over my gmail account 1/2 of which don't even make any sense (great algorithms google) tell me otherwise.

these threads always turn into fanboys vs fanboys. the truth of the matter is, if google had won the pats instead, it'd be the complete reverse. the loser always cries. That simple. Google didn't bid 4B on the pattents to share em for free. So arguing that apple is unfair is simply dumb. Learn business before commenting.

Cry moar. Google's monopoly is worrisome. That is why other companies are joining against them. Duh.

Google should just shut up. They close their own labs, and every researcher knows what that means. They are no longer interested in innovation (read: too saturated). So the only one who started a "Hostile, Organized Campaign Against Android" is Google itself. The only question is now: Why (are they just too saturated)?

Unless we act, consumers could face rising costs for Android devices — and fewer choices for their next phone.
Really? Hey, screw you Google! Do I even have a choice in the US? I want an unlocked non-OEM/carrier-molested Android phone. What are my choices? 2. The old Nexus S, or the older Nexus One. Is that choice? That's the same as Apple, 2 phones, the latest, and the previous version.

Now, if I just want an unlocked Android phone in the US, the choice is not really better. The only OEM that is actively selling unlocked Android phone in the US is Sony Ericsson. That's it. Choice? Where?

Google, you slept with Verizon, and you threw net neutrality under the bus. Now you want to act goody two shoes? Screw you!

I whole-heartedly agree with this statement. Somethings gotta give.

Google elected to not take part in these alliances, not the other way around. All of thes companies, google included, belong to several patent consortiums together.

Whats in it for you to be so obsessed with Apple's success? Unless you own Apple stocks, you shouldn't be so psychotically in love with Apple, or any other corporation.

Do any of you ignorant fanboys realize that so much control, lawsuits, market dominance, and patent holdings only stifle competition and innovation? If Apple had its way, smaller companys woud cease to exist, competition would be gone and the push for Apple to innovate themselves is gone. Good luck with technology moving forward when theres no push any corporation to do so. This has already happened with the iPods complete obliteration of the market, and it helped Apple further when they were able to suck up NAND flash memory, not only at a lower price but also killing off the supply possible for competitors.

A great example would be Canada's duopoly in the broadband internet market. Only Bell and Rogers exist and have nearly complete control over the entire country for internet services. Only recently have Canadians generally been able to get speeds beyond 10-20mbit connection, depending on connection. Bell doesn't offer me anything faster than 1mbit connection in my area with a 300gb cap and they still charge me $45/month just for internet. I don't have any other options.

You think these corporations are in any rush while they can milk the consumer for everything they've got?

I like some Apple products as much as I dislike their other products. I give both harsh criticism as well as great praise wherever it is due, but the lot of you ignorant fools need to adapt some sense of rational thought.

Of course, I expect this message to get 'negged' (as it already has THREE only minutes after this being posted). Its obvious that certain macrumors members either; don't read more than the first line or have trouble with critical thinking.

And you need to learn some non-extreme words. One post:
harsh criticism
holy corporation
ignorant fools
great praise
killing off
cease to exist
obliteration
gone
obsessed
fanboys

Get a grip, kiddo!

Doors

If technology patents were "real-world" we'd see patents on things like doors (a device used to temporarily open a solid structure to allow the passage of items).

We need patent reform when it comes to technology and we need it soon.

The US Patent Office (uspto.gov) shows 15,944 (current) door patents. Do you hate all of them?

If so, I suppose that you are in "good" company. Google, founded on the Stanford search patent -- use-rights purchased with a million or two shares of stock -- seems, like you, to have found religion: patents are evil.

That does not make it true.

THey did create the first PDA, and it all follows from there.

Italian law and government is completely disfunctional. Berlusconi should have been convicted several times over. The Italian judicial system is rigged and corrupt. You must live under a rock not to know this.

Google's customers are advertisers

Just have the ads pony up more money per handset.

Google's whole model revolves around how much ads they can have you view, so NO Android is not free

Patents were meant to encourage innovation, but lately they are being used as a weapon to stop it.

I do agree with that, all this suing and crap is getting so ridiculous. There is a new one every week. It is a stupid pissing contest.

Though I think the campaign against Android is ridiculous and as others have said it would be quite a unholy alliance. Pretty sure Microsoft views Apple a bigger threat than Google.

Do any of you ignorant fanboys realize that so much control, lawsuits, market dominance, and patent holdings only stifle competition and innovation?

Well, that's what 99% of posters here ARE complaining about.

But wait...you apparently can't understand a nuanced viewpoint (patent laws bad, Google still being stupid) and so you have to cast everything as an 'us-vs-them' drama that only allows cartoonish superheros and supervillains.

So, in your world, everyone here is apparently praising Apple since you're unable to read anything more subtle than a Bazooka Joe comic strip without getting confused.

I'd say that you're wrong but you're probably not going to listen to me anyway. Regardless, I have to say that it makes me angry to see someone such as yourself come in here and bash MacRumors posters (who are fine people) because of your own misreading of the posts here.

No, it's not. Android is very successful and taking a lot of flak recently. It looks as if every parasite on the planet is trying to suck some blood out of it.

Like all the Apple-haters that troll the Apple fan forums in order to trash the things that Apple fans love most? Is it like that?

Actually, it couldn't be worse that that actually.
