DuckDuckGo sucks. You can't find anything with it. It's completely useless. Bing and Yahoo! search suck too.
Google is the only usable one. (Especially in Europe). Even Apple Maps sucks in my country, but Google Maps is really great.
I’m in Europe, I have been using DuckDuckGo for quite some time now. And it’s my default search everywhere. So, sure, let Google piss away 15B for something that is only on clean installs and no guarantee.

I personally like Apple Maps better then Google maps too, but I most commonly use the nav that came with my car anyway. (Because it’s the only one that shows nav instructions on the hud)

[…]". You're telling me these people would notice the difference between bing and google?
Yes. The younger demographics. Absolutely. But we are all "arguing" over our anecdotal observations on this. Google must have some stats to back up their $15B.

I tried other search engines and they were all pretty ouch doo doo compared to Google.

I ditched Google a long time ago. I don’t knowingly use their services. I even go and change the default DNS servers on my router not to use Googles.

Bing was never good, and would never use it (I mean - whats the difference since when is Microsoft nicer than Google??

Duckduckgo is really good these days, I almost never need to switch to Google.

Also because it's 2020 there's certain things that are actually hidden on Google, and can only be found on Duckduckgo.

Example anything health related - it's crazy how different the search results are between DDG and Google there - and it's all due to the fact that GOOG has obvious vested interests in big pharma.

I did a few tests that were mind blowing, anyone can do them - searching for Hillary Clinton email scandal for example, it was gone from Google. Things like that.

So Google is shooting itself in the foot with its "other" interests, be they political, monetary, or both (Google's parent Alphabet is massively invested in Pharma, unfortunately something Apple is also looking at)

All that being said - I would imagine DDG is probably still pretty bad in non-english speaking countries. It's only recently got good enough for me to use as default.
Thank goodness you did scientific tests to uncover this Google and Big Pharma scandal. I know a guy who might help you have a convention to show your findings.

DuckDuckGo (ie anonymized Bing search with a few extra bells and whistles) serves me well 95% of the time, but there are occasions when I am forced to go back to Google as DDG just isn't giving me the results I need, which I get immediately from Google.

One thing I did notice quite quickly when I started using DDG was how the online advertising on other sites started to lose track of who I was, as they didn't have any of the Google search history cookies, which was refreshing... mind you it does now mean that I see ads like "Buy this device that uses special red light to clean your chakras and can cure 99% of known ailments and perform reiki on your reflexology points"... at which point I realize we're doomed as a species.
LOL. I looked at a halloween witch decoration this morning, and it's been popping up magically all day on every web site. Including MR.

We’re “arguing” about apple hypocrisy by taking money from google and if apple were privacy minded they wouldn’t take money and set the default to DDG. @IllinoisCorn contention is most people wouldn’t know the difference. I agree if you are 50 or older. But 35 and under they are right there technically. 55 and under have a pretty good understanding. Apple is giving the people what they want and are getting paid for it.

This is what I am saying. Plop a search engine in front of random person A and they will just search and not really think of a "Google" search or a "DDG" or "Yahoo" search. It's ALL THE SAME TO MOST PEOPLE. The idea that one of my 45 year old peers would stop and say..."well, that's not exactly google...let me go to google.com..." is nuts.

To those in the know? There is a difference. To most people? It's just a box to type in.

well, both of you are right.
Apple is hypocrite by saying they are privacy minded company then take money and install google surveillance ware on iOS as the default

AND

A lot of people do not know the difference between the interface of Google or Yahoo. You will be surprised by this. All I can say to them its the same as much as a Shiseido cosmetic palette is the same as L’Oréal comsetic palette. Some do, but many many do not. Most people are not techies.

here is a surprise: DDG, Qwant, Ecosia all use Bing results they kind of act like a middle man between you and them.

Brave has new search engine that is indepedent, its in beta & no where near as good as the others: search.brave.com

I think Yandex has its own indepedent search system.

You can use Startpage.com to get Google results, they act like middle man between you and Google.

THere is software called Searx, it searches multiple search engines and you can customise it to your like and you can run it on your own server, but there are people out there that installed it and let others usei t for free. Here is one:

If you like to see less ads and tracking install uBlock Origin for the browser, 1blocker(paid) or AdGuard for Safari, and consider using a PiHole , NextDNS (PiHole in the cloud) , or use the free DNS that block ads from ControlDNS which is 76.76.2.2

As much as I dislike google their search engine is just so much better than the others. More often than not the most relevant results right up there at the top of the search. For all the money Microsoft has poured into Bing, the results are mostly terrible.

There is a reason for that, Google harvest data from every where and every single point. Maps, Locations, emails, YouTube, browser, chat history, Android activity, search Engine, calendar, Google Docs, ...etc and by that they can serve you a more precise result.

So yes, the results are better but there is a price to pay for it.

What is google surveillance ware and does it apply if the default the user has chosen is bing?

Again we’re arguing to make a point (or prove the premise) based on our anecdotal experiences.

When finally released, Apples search engine will dominate. Unless it turns out to be a flop like their news app.

I've been satisfied with DuckDuckGo.

If you want talk about being anti-competitive and not being fair....

"In addition, Yahoo and Microsoft have both been interested in inking a deal with Apple to overthrow Google as the default search engine on iOS devices, and the analysts suggest Google's huge payments to Apple are made to ensure Microsoft doesn't outbid it."

Never mind the app store fees. Being competitive, or not, doesn't have holes in.... its universal.

Oh lord... maybe we need a "Search Ballot" on iPhones now... like the "Browser Ballot" on Windows a decade ago.

:p
