Maybe the quality of search results from duck duck go differs from country to country. As a software developer I can say the duck duck is very bad at finding solutions on stackoverflow / find useful libraries / find documentations / find specific and relevant youtube videos. I tried it for a few months and really had to use Google here and there to do my job. And I really don't like Google for a lot of reasons.
When did you last try it? My experience has been the opposite DuckDuckGo is amazing for programming questions and typically provides them in the instant answer section while Google struggles to find anything relevant.

Some of us want as little to do with Google as possible. Every interaction that you have with them that can be tracked back to a person will be. Search is especially lucrative. They'll sell the fact that user X is looking for widget Y to a company that sells Y or something similar.
I use DuckDuckGo on some devices and Startpage on others. If I could block google[dot]com then I would but some sites insist on using those stupid captur things.
Google is at the top of my list of sites/companies that with their demise, the world would be a better place.
Lol tinfoil hat god level. Ban Google altogether from your use but throw your money at Apple who profits with your data as well, this is one of many examples.

I'm still amazed that no one has been able to match Google's search abilities.

Even if you can't get your eyes on Google's exact search code... we still know what we want from a search engine.

Every search engine searches and indexes the same thing: the Web.

So how has no one else been able to create a search engine that has results as good as Google's? Does Google really have some magic special sauce that no other software engineer can ever figure out?
Its not the amount its the search bubble no privacy focused search engine will ever give you the same feeling. Religious individuals will see results that align with their world view same for political or other controversial topics like vaccinations. Duckduckgo might link to something that challenges your worldview making it seem worse than it is when Google only gives you what you want to see or hear.

These days I tell people to ‘Duck Duck Google it’, which is exactly what I do. I find DuckDuckGo great for maybe 80% of my searches. If it comes up short, I try Google. That’s the great thing about having choices folks—there’s no law that says you have to pick one and stick to it!

This deal is proof that Apple has never cared about user privacy or having "privacy by default" or whatever. Apple wants to maximize profits and they have no higher objective than that.

Google doesn't pay Apple $15B for fun - they pay that to acquire the data from the 99% of Apple users who will never bother changing the default search engine.

Same here - I use DDG on my phone no problem, but on the laptop, I use it for work, and it's Google all the way - Google finds anything and everything on Stackoverflow, the most important website for developers... it's basically amazing at that. I am also a software developer - need to use Google for that.
StackOverflow is garbage

Can you actually prove that 99%? Or is that number an opinion.

Basically the above seems fictionalized.

As much as I hate Google and especially their business model, its search engine is the only usable one.
Save your money, people will switch to Google search anyway.

I tried Bing, I really tried DuckDuckGo.
It was only one thing: Frustrating.
This has been true for me as well. I would LIKE to use DuckDuckGo (competition is healthy and good) but it always falls short. I'm curious as to how so many others find it to be usable and preferable over Google.

I use Bing daily... primarily to rack up the Amazon gift cards through Bing rewards... most of the time search results are inferior to Google's. If I'm not satisfied with Google's results, I'll try Bing, and it almost always provides the thing I'm looking for.

Remarkable that Google is paying so much for something that anybody can change. I’ve been using DDG as the default search engine for years. And I find stuff, how about that?🍸😹

I never really got this huge sum of money.

Isn’t Google the best search engine and doesn’t Apple want to offer the best to its users?

This should be a win win situation for both companies without any transaction between them, but I’m obviously very wrong. 😛
Google the best search engine? I don't know about that. It used to be. But I switched to DuckDuckgo years ago and haven't really noticed it being any better or worse than google. Except now I have bit more privacy. My policy is to never use google products if I can help it, and it's working out pretty well. I never get those creepy ads that show up because you talked about something at a friend's house, or whatever. The only targeted ads I get are for things I specifically searched for on amazon or some other shopping site.

If this is worth Google's while, think how much money Google makes off each Apple user who leaves Google as the default and what they do with your information to make that money. Do you really think it's in your best interest as a user to use Google?

Google is not the best search engine. It's the best at bribing companies to stick them is as the default and since most people use them, they just assume they're the best.

This is probably the reason why Google is so aggressive at this in-page pop-up campaign since iOS 14.

What's the "best" search engine and by whose metrics?

It's not only Apple ios users. But a lot of ios users also search on a mac, pc, ipad or other tablet. In other words, does the ios user, on a device that is not ios driven, still use google?

DuckDuckGo user here and couldn’t be happier switching away from Google. No more censored search results, go try it and you’ll have your eyes opened at how heavily Google has been filtering and censoring your results.

That plus the privacy is why I switched.

I’m surprised Apple doesn’t make its own search engine.
Ahh, lord no. Apple Siri AI sucks, apple spellchecking sucks. I am not aware of any Apple end use AI that does not suck. Sure Apple makes great tools, but I cannot imagine Apple search being any good whatsoever.

I am forever sold on DDG as default AND their browswer.
Fantastic search engine and browser too.

If Google is willing to pay this much to Apple to remain the default search engine, how much are they making from searches on iOS?

HATE everything about Google and do my best to never use any of their products. That said, I'm glad they are giving Apple all this money.... just that none of it has been made from me.
