One size doesn't fit all.. Just because it look hideous on Google may not mean its looks hideous on Apple by all
I have no problem with the Notch, I don't even notice it's there. My question was directed to the majority here that complained about how ugly that notch is.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery.

Proof that Apple sets standards.

Many would disagree with this, but Apple is a trendsetter. They’re not the first to release certain specific features or capabilities, but that usually take that same or similar feature and make it more refined and better for the user experience.

I missed when Apple held onto really good patents and went after people who used them.

Like multi touch! Why isn't apple suing over this notch?

If you copy their faceID tech, you will get sued...

Most flamers here can't even read an article. Only dannys1 got it right.

The notch is a compromise for having a full screen display, but still using some sensors which can't be hidden behind the display (yet). Most devices without a notch have a slightly larger top bezel.

And again, it's a DEVELOPER function to simulate the notch, nothing else.

Why would a company like Google deliberately *add* a notch to its OS display? That's just ridiculous. If I'm jumping ship from Apple, I'm for sure not going to want a phone with that notch.

It's a notch *simulator*, for developers to see how their apps will look on phones that do have notches. Now the OS has better support for notches — let's just hope that OEMs don't take that as an excuse to put a notch on every phone.

I wonder if Google was prompted to add this functionality to Android after seeing some of the absolute UI train-wrecks at the most recent Mobile World Congress from some of the Chinese suppliers who added rounded corners and notches to their phones that covered elements like the Clock and Cellular Strength indicators.

Not surprising, it was only a matter of time. Android design has always followed the trend of Apple, this is nothing new. Still funny that they all mock the notch and then do the exact same thing. It's a fair representation of their OS as a whole.

The notch is a compromise and I don't know why anyone would deliberately copy it.

That said, I assume that Google adding this feature to Android isn't them "copying" it, but rather adding support in software for OEM's that will inevitably copy the notch, however ridiculous that is.

Now if Google adds a notch with the Pixel 3 instead of just keeping a very small bezel on the top and bottom of the phone, I'm going to lose it.

This will die a natural death, nothing to see here. How many people will buy the Asus phone w/ notch, maybe 1000 worldwide? /s. The next OnePlus with a notch, maybe people will buy. Apple can get away with / use a notch because they are Apple and there is actually a very good reason hardware-wise for the notch to exist. All the other Android OEM don't have the tech to utilize a notch properly. Most of the cheap knock-offs don't even have anything inside the notch and it's just there for cosmetic purposes. This latter approach really amuses me. All of the Android OEM who are preparing phones with notches are in for a rude awakening, imo. No one will buy them like people buy iPhones, and they will lose money. And they should lose money for this.

Hopefully Samsung and Google will still have enough sense to not use a notch in the S10 and Pixel 3.

Who is "they"? All Android makers? Google?
And Material design followed the trend of Apple?

Your post makes no sense at all.

"26% smaller than Fruit Phone X*"

I find that Asus announcement photo funny, the childish "Fruit Phone X" aspect notwithstanding, but I feel like it needs the below:

*"with 100% less 3D facial mapping technology that necessitated the wide notch in the first place that we are bragging about being smaller than sine we aren't including anywhere near the same level of technology in that are of the screen"

and add:

"disclaimer: the saved space from the notch it's being allocated in the bottom area of the screen, mother***rs!!"

XD

I like the Google phone with the bezel and the notch. That's really special. :p

I would love it if after all these Android abominations get released with notches, Apple blows everyone away in September with a notch-less iPhone X. They all will be caught with their pants down, embarrassed, and CEO / designers of all notch knock offs should be fired for incompetence. Of course this won't happen, but I would love to see it.

well that's ridiculous..that notch is the ugliest aspect (after huge protruding vertical camera lens) of iPhone X..
I have to say it never bothered me during the 2 months that I had an iPhone X..(the camera bump was a different story though)..
kudos to Samsung for Better design and engineering..no camera bump on S8/Note 8/S9 and better/as good camera compared to iPhone X and they way they deal with edge toe edge display is frankly the best.they beat Apple in terms of design.
that's for sure.

I went to go get a haircut today, I just said, "give me the notch". She knew exactly what I was talking about.
LOL. This may be my Halloween costume this year. Walk around like a smug jerk with a notch haircut, backpack in tow with iPhone raised and condescending look down on everyone. It is seriously one of my favorite commercials of all time, and I hate commercials.
