Except that they did set a standard for facial recognition, which is why the phone has a notch.
That’s the thing. The iPhone X has the notch for a good reason. The Android OEMs have the notch just because. Take Asus, their latest Zenphone has a notch, but still leaves a substantial bezel at the bottom. They didn’t even bother going full edge to edge screen. That’s how lazy these OEMs are.

Ironic that they are all mimicking Apple's bad design. That 'Notch' might be iconic but for all the wrong reasons; it is nothing to be proud of, imitated or encouraged—and hopefully soon gone and forgotten.

I'm surprised MacRumors didn't mention the Essential Phone, which was the first phone with a notch that I'm aware of. Instead, it's written as if the notch is a) an innovation and b) Apple's innovation. It's kind of an odd thing to highlight a minor developer feature too, out of an entire major OS release.

It's a developer option. The idea is to simulate the notch when testing your apps, so that users of Android phones which DO have a physical notch will see it function correctly.

It's not intended for the average Joe with a Galaxy S7 to create their own notch effect.

this. you need to be upvoted more. It's a dev preview so that developers can get their apps ready for Android P and the slew of OEMs who will include a notch in their hardware (for better or for worse...)

A s/w simulated notch. Next thing you know they'll be selling bags of rotted potatoes in the gourmet aisle.

Eric Schmidt of Google sat on the Apple board while the iPhone was being developed and soaked up a lot of design info. He quit a few months before the iPhone was released. Following the release of the iPhone Google came out with their "iPhone clone". So what a shock  to see Google is still "innotating"...

Didn't the essential phone launch with a notch before the iPhone X? ...
Yes indeed -- in fact, it has both a notch and a chin:

... though, given that there are no real secrets in the industry at this point, and given that Apple arguably puts a lot more time and effort into their R&D, it might still be conceivable that the Essential was itself influenced by the rumors and leaks related to the (then) planned iPhone X design.

I personally think that Apple's design team knew full well that the notch was going to be panned... just as they knew it would be copied. To wit: I think they've decided to go full tilt in trolling the Android manufacturers... and we'll get to hear all about it next year, when they release the new notchless phones accompanied by much fanfare and by criticism of the competition...

Apple: "See?!? They're so desperate to beat us, that they even copied our sucky compromise design ideas! Well, no more compromises -- and no more notch! Ka-chow!!!"

Random Android manufacturer: "But... Ka-chiga?"

Will the next round of lawsuits be about "notchgate"?

Apple: Hey you thieves, we own the "notch", its our invention, you stole it from us.

Google (and rest of the world): The notch is in the public domain, you can't own the notch, don't be greedy.

Apple: Judge, we want $10 billion from them thieves stealing our notch.

Judge: OK you get the notch Apple, but if Google notch is 0.1mm narrower, then it's a different notch. Case closed.

More likely Notchghazi. It's there but the media will bury it and we'll all forget.

Apple should leak that their next iPhone case will be made out of the miracle substance "Semtex" just to see if Android follows suit.

Why would a company like Google deliberately *add* a notch to its OS display? That's just ridiculous. If I'm jumping ship from Apple, I'm for sure not going to want a phone with that notch.

You'd think that... but stupid rubs off... and it's rubbed off from Apple onto the Android world.

This is ridiculous. First Android mocks the notch, and now embraces it. Pathetic.

Reminds me of the signs at a WWDC 12 years ago, "Redmond, start your photocopiers" and Steve Jobs quote "The only problem with Microsoft is they just have no taste."

Since when "Android" mocked the Notch?

So... they have android phone that have notches already (top and bottom bars) and then digitally add on an additional notch to mimic iPhone. That’s both desperate and the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. I don’t think android users are yelling we want less screen!

When you're the number one smart phone provider in the world, everyone want to copy you.
