Google's dumb? They are preparing Android to support hardware OEMs who are already in the process of designing hardware that necessitates a notch. Dumb, indeed.
This is the main point that people are missing.

2007 phone makers:
The iPhone is not a real smartphone. Nobody is going to want one. It doesn’t have a real keyboard, the battery drains too fast and nobody will pay $599 for a phone.

2010 phone makers:
Who in their right mind would put the phone antenna on the outside? Apple is stupid for their antenna design. And a glass back!? Apple once again prioritizes form over function.

2013 phone makers:
Apples 64 bit A7 is nothing more than a marketing gimmick. Finger print readers are not a killer consumer feature, and it’s insane to think a finger print can secure your phone when you are leaving finger prints all over the glass. Big security risk.

2016 phone makers:
“Portrait” in the iPhone 7 Plus is not useful. Apple is not the first to ship a dual lense smartphone.

2017 phone makers:
The “notch” is ugly, disruptive, and ungainly. Apple has lost their sense of design

Android debuts with its own notc---

Why would a company like Google deliberately *add* a notch to its OS display? That's just ridiculous. If I'm jumping ship from Apple, I'm for sure not going to want a phone with that notch.
Google is trying to move towards vanilla on all devices. In order to do that they need to support different types of hardware.

This isn't a requirement. It's simply
Google accepting what manufacturers are doing right now and deciding to support it.

I like to look at "copying" in a different way. The cheap OEMs copy. What Apple does is "embrace and extend". It is a perfectly valid product strategy. Samsung's realization that they can't or don't want to be first will see them do this a lot more, too. Just look at their version of Animoji's, classic embrace and extend. The notch: embrace Essentials notch and extend its form and usefulness.

This is because the developers know that people want something that looks like an iPhone, doesn't matter if it looks good or no. Hardware makers will add the notch, so Android adds the support for the notch. I must admit that Apple notch looks better than Asus.

"Asus bragged that its notch is 26 percent smaller than the notch on the iPhone X. "
- except there is a chin at the bottom!

Don't see what the big deal is since it's like Microsoft or Linux adding a device driver to the operating system.

A lot of it is also fake news to re-spin the iPhone X notch to make it look positive and wanted. Much like the fake news that came out before the Galaxy S8 and Note 8 releases that Samsung was going to remove the 3.5mm jack but it didn't happen. It was fake news to calm customers over Apple removing the 3.5mm jack by saying, oh look, Samsung is doing it too.

There's a difference between what Google is doing and what phone makers are doing. Google's handling this from the OS side to address copycat phone makers that also want a notch.

From an OS standpoint it absolutely makes sense if your hardware partners are going that direction. Now it's a different thing to criticize Google IF their Pixel phones also add a notch.

First there are Notch removers on iOS, then there's a Notch adder on Android.

This is insane, but proves Apple is still sought after design-wise.
Not entirely, many folks on the Android side are crying foul - instead of fighting the notch by releasing something different, manufacturers are copying the notch and making it "legit".

Frankly, it's boring and uninspired, I won't be going after any of these models.

Reading most of the comments on here it shows how little Apple fanboys understand technology.

It’s not to make a Pixel look like a iPhone, it’s to test apps for phones that do have a notch coming out. How do most of you think this is to add a notch to a S8/S9 or Pixel is funny.

It's a developer option. The idea is to simulate the notch when testing your apps, so that users of Android phones which DO have a physical notch will see it function correctly.

It's not intended for the average Joe with a Galaxy S7 to create their own notch effect.

Thankfully someone gets it :)

Notch embracing just shows how all these phone companies really dont have a clue to what they want or where they re going with their phones. I know these phones are that expensive, but they really do look cheap because of it.

it’s interesting that they use screen-to-body percentages. If Apple creates a bigger screen with the same size bezel then the percentage goes up, but the bezels are the same size. I don’t think it’s a good representation of the size of the bezels.

You’re being too logical and making too much sense. You don’t belong here, you’re poopooing on the “screen to body ratio” trolls.

Most of them won’t even understand what you said or care even, so maybe not...

So now this is the direction everyone wants to go in? News flash - you guys actually had it right with the slim bezel front design. Please reconsider copying Apple on this.

And “Fruit Phone X”? Ha.

Yeah yeah yeah , Apple Never copied anything from Android, right? Or any other phone? Apple wasn't the first to do a lot of things, like icons on a screen

I am not sure how that relates, but Android in it's current form wouldn't exist without Apple.

Essential PH-1 announced and shipped with a display with no bezels and a notch.
Apple shipped and announced 2nd.

Just for accuracy.

Essential has a large bottom chin/bezel.

I'm kinda meh towards the iPhone's notch, but at least it kinda makes sense there for what they're trying to achieve. On Android phones however, with those bottom chins and the extra area occupied by software buttons, the notch just looks pathetic.

Google should also include an option for a cutout on the lower part of the screen, so some manufacturers could place a big fake exhaust there. The bigger the better

I think most understand. Android is embracing the notch as a lot of their manufacturers are moving in that direction for design. I am sure Samsung and potentially Google will head in that direction soon enough.

Please read the article. They did not add it to any of their own phones, however, given that the operating system is used on dozens of phones, like any other good software developer, they are providing support for the display. I know it's hard to fathom because Apple likes to brainwash it's developers to stick to certain resolutions, and only recently started experimenting with multiple resolutions, but other software vendors provide options.

Good for google

Android phone companies are so manipulative. Yes you have a small notch, but you also aren't fitting in a dot projector and other sensors. Android followers are sheep.

Holy cow the never-notchers are going into meltdown mode! This news is notch what they wanted to hear..
