I don't trust Apple either (I refused to use Apple's keychain/passwords), but I trust Google far less (as in, not at all).

Yes, that is what was reported before and is in this article (and the announcements). Now, it's likely people will be able to send queries to Google-hosted servers, but this announcement is that Google is providing the model for Apple to run on its own hardware.

This is what the rumor mill has been saying for a while, but the statement ran by CNBC and The Verge this morning was less descriptive so it made me skeptical.

I mean, I’m still skeptical of how they can do this. If they are REALLY doing that without compromise I can only imagine the staggering amounts of money involved in making this happen.

Ideally, I'd prefer to be able to pick my own LLM provider instead.

I have Apple Intelligence turned off, and would turn off Siri altogether if I could and still use CarPlay.

I wonder how this will impact ChatGPT integration. Gemini is capable, maybe even more so, but I don’t trust Google, and ChatGPT is still my LLM of choice.

I don't trust any big tech corporation to do anything other than what they perceive as in their own best interests. That includes Apple.

They may be less bad now than, say, Google or Meta, but that could change in an instant when the leadership changes. And if that happens, all the data you've been sharing (including very personal data like health data) will be up for grabs.

Apple earned my trust by consistently delivering in that area (e.g. iMessage was E2EE long before anything else, Apple Pay is incredibly well architected etc.). They spend a lot of time sweating over security and privacy, they want to stay on the bleeding edge on that front.

I agree the stance could change and I do fear where new leadership will take Apple. People here love to whine about Cook over the most inconsequential and asinine things, but he's kept Apple to its core principles. The phrase "be careful what you wish for" applies so strongly here.

How is Google Apple's nemesis? Google currently pays Apple upwards of $20 billion a year for search, with Apple now giving $1B back to rent this model. They compete, for sure, but the business relationship seems far more collaborative when it suits both parties. This move confirms Apple and Google have more to fear from Meta and OpenAI than each other.

They aren’t the enemies people make them out to be. Google still pays Apple to remain the default search engine on iPhones.

I have 0 trust in Google and very perplexed that Apple would pair up with a company that is known to spy on all user interactions with their platform. Siri has already been a disaster, now may be the time to turn it off altogether.

Yep. It is absolutely mind boggling how bad Siri is sometimes. I’ve had this experience several times lately. I’ll ask Siri how far it is from X to Y. Siri’s response is “I don’t know where you are”. Where I am is irrelevant and not needed to answer the question. I am at neither X nor Y. I am asking how far it is from X to Y.

This makes the most sense and is a win-win for both companies.

Apple gets to ship “Siri 2.0”, while also able to take their time with “LLM Siri” without the pressure of needing to get “Siri 2.0” out asap.

Apple has partnered with companies before while working on their own implementation on the back end (Google Maps, Weather Channel, Intel, Qualcomm, etc. etc.). This also runs on private cloud compute allegedly so no user data is getting to Google.

For Google, it’s a no-brainer because it’s freezes out their main competitor with OpenAI. Now every mobile device in the world, both android and iOS, will have Gemini out the box. I would be quite nervous today, if I were OpenAI and Altman as they’ve had to watch Google leapfrog them over the past year, partly due to having billions of android devices out there and now they are getting iOS devices and users as well.

Both companies win in this scenario.

I’m slowly trying to eliminate as many Google apps and services in my life as I can. The end goal is to have none of their stuff on my iPhone.
