You need to read what Google said. Apple is building their own models based off of Gemini models. They're not just slapping Google Gemini into iOS and calling it a day.

I already have Siri and Apple Intelligence tuned to the most accurate personalisation possible using a complex implementation of the affirmatively negative selection processing through the UI elements provided in the system settings, meaning my precise wishes and priorities are given extraordinary speed and performance throughout all my interactions with the device on a bespoke and individual basis that respects my privacy while providing everything I want from the services.

Yes, I turn them off!

Google pays Apple billions to be the default search engine in Safari. I don’t think Apple views Pixel as competition considering they’d sold more iPhone Air since launch (considered a flop) than Google sold Pixels all last year.

It’s sad they’ve failed to innovate without needing to do this, but it’s very Apple. They partnered with Microsoft they partnered with Samsung. They’ve partnered with Google before.

I wonder whether they'll announce support for new languages. For example Apple Intelligence doesn't support polish, but Google Gemini does.

A lot of misunderstandings here.

To people who are opposed to Apple using Gemini:

You’re potentially assuming that using Gemini = my data goes to Google Ads, but Apple is using Gemini more like a licensed engine running inside Apple’s Private Cloud Compute. Those servers are designed to be stateless (no logs, no storage) and remain under Apple’s control, so Google supplies model weights and infra, but does not get to see or reuse Siri/Apple Intelligence prompts for its own purposes.

I have so far chosen to stick with an iPhone to avoid Google's invasive practices on Android... now Apple has invited them into my pocket?

With Tahoe, I basically have stuck with macOS at this point because of iOS... I think Apple is making repeated mis-steps and isn't finding their way out of the malaise era with this move.

Yes, I'm sure that is a model that has been discussed. If that's the case though, there will be no turning Gemini off and Google will be buying the data collected on endpoints. I don't think Apple can do that though - it would cause too much damage to the brand. I'll be the licensing for Gemini and the retention of most data would cost Apple $40-50 Billion annually with their current $18 Billion search contract baked into the end number.

I turn Siri off because its garbage. Gemini on the other hand is dope. No harm in Apple admitting they couldn't get this done without Google stepping up with the carry.

If it’s true that Google is simply letting Apple use their models on Apple’s own hardware, why would they do it? Money can’t be the only motive. Even if the $1 billion figure is accurate, that’s not much in the grand scheme of things. Why would Google agree to this for just $1 billion?

I expect that that that that it will work in the way that they outlined at the WWDC 24 keynote

ie where Google provides the model and it’s run on Apple’s own servers.

However. Gemini currently pulls in lots of search knowledge when it answers prompts and I imagine that Apple’s version will do the same.

Apple have already outlined how they anonymise any queries that currently go to ChatGPT & I can’t see why they wouldn’t use the same method with Gemini.

Do we know it's just one billion just once? I think this is the beginning of an ongoing and deeper partnership, like the Google Search deal monopoly.

And if they are using the models on Apple's hardware, they don't have a lot to lose. Apple is covering costs and paying them and increasing exposure to Gemini.

Part of the reason they did this, I'm sure, is to take more steam out of ChatGPT. That alone has got to be worth quite a bit in their strategic battle with OpenAI.
