I think you have that backwards.

Apple will use Google of AI and it will be really good (but not very private). Then Apple will release its own AI and it will suck.

So exactly the same model as Maps.
No I think you need to look at that again — Google’s offering doesn’t impact privacy at all since Apple will be hosting it and accessing it with Private Cloud Compute

If it’s true that Google is simply letting Apple use their models on Apple’s own hardware, why would they do it? Money can’t be the only motive. Even if the $1 billion figure is accurate, that’s not much in the grand scheme of things. Why would Google agree to this for just $1 billion?
Gemini on iPhone is better than ChatGPT or Meta AI on iPhone. This likely about money for Google it’s about mindshare and install base. They don’t want ChatGPT to become a verb the way “just google it” did.

The articles a while back about google making their own private cloud compute type thing similar to Apple makes some sense now. Probably related in making changes for Apple.

We cannot know that. And we know Apple marketing provides a lot of BS. So while I cannot dispute the privacy issue, neither can you support it with any proof other than Apple marketing and propaganda.

I received downvotes not long ago about Apple essentially giving up their larger AI goals and turning it over to Google.

I detailed how it’s impossible to produce even a half-way competent LLM in house without exorting to anti-privacy tactics that have been historically anathema to Apple and Apple’s philosophy that other LLM engineers like Google, xAI, Meta, OpenAI, even Anthropic which all have chosen to ignore and sometimes even flout.

Also how Apple is now tied to the hip with Google not only for search engine revenue but also that the new head of Apple Intelligence is the former head of Google’s Gemini.

And now this news of even FURTHER Gemini integration into Apple Intelligence.

I don’t care about any protest about how Gemini will still run privately on Apple’s cloud or even locally on my phone. The fact still remains. Apple has given up on making a truly competent and compelling AI on its own. They have decided to just wrap Liquid Glass around someone else’s product and market it as their own.

Apple and Google today announced that Google Gemini will help power not only a more personalized version of Siri, but a range of future Apple Intelligence features.

"Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology," the companies said, in a statement. "These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri coming this year."

Apple is "excited about the innovative new experiences" that the partnership will unlock, but the statement did not provide any details about specific features.

It is unclear if Gemini will help power any existing Apple Intelligence features, such as Writing Tools, Image Playground, and Notification Summaries.

Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and on Apple's Private Cloud Compute servers, with Apple promising industry-leading privacy standards.

The more personalized version of Siri is expected to be introduced with iOS 26.4 in March or April, following a lengthy delay. The new capabilities will include better understanding of a user's personal context, on-screen awareness, and deeper per-app controls. For example, Apple showed an iPhone user asking Siri about their mother's flight and lunch reservation plans based on info from the Mail and Messages apps.

I want less Google not more.

Perhaps I am missing something but why would Apple power Siri using Google Gemini after they already integrated ChatGPT into iOS, iPadOS, macOS? Does this mean after the March OS updates we will now have an option to sign into Gemini instead of ChatGPT in the AI settings of each operating system respectively? This seems like lack of vision to me, although I may be misunderstanding this.

Naa, you understand it well.

Apple receives $20B from Google to make them the default search engine on Apple devices.
This deal was under scrutiny by the Feds, less so under Trump than when Lina Khan was at FTC, but still being mentioned.

The search deal was presumably not just to get people to use Google, but included some sort of backend usage data, which Apple claims is non-identifiable by user.

Now Google will receive $1B back from Apple to license AI models for use inside Apple's devices and datacenters.

Keep an eye out for more back-and-forth deals between GOOG and AAPL, this may be a way of diminishing the search deal and "netting out" the value of their investments in each other. Apple Music for Pixel, etc.

Funny how Apple cries about Chromium forks taking over the browser market, but proudly bends over to Google on AI.

This just tells me Apple, more specifically Tim Cook, was completely asleep at the wheel for the last 10 years. What an embarrassment for Apple! Fire Tim Cook and bring in competent leadership!

Let me preface this by saying obviously Apple is doing very well before comments try to pounce on me...

But this reminds me of 1997 when Microsoft invested $150 million in Apple, effectively giving it a lifeline to avoid bankruptcy. Apple was kinda "bankrupt" now in terms of AI and Google has come to the rescue.

As long as it can be permanently disabled, I don't care. I don't trust Google a micron, let alone for them to keep my data on my phone and not send it to the mothership.

TBH, I'd prefer if Apple sold phones that don't have Apple Intelligence OR any Google crapiness. Yes, I use YouTube, but this is from an old iPad via a VPN, which has no connection to my AppleID. It does not do email or social media. I put up with Ads as I don't have a Google account. FSCK Google for spying on everyone with scant regard to privacy.

This new arrangement via Google Gemini is likely to provide three responses from iPhone users:

1. The Faithful loyalists believing Apple can do no wrong: I trust Apple.
2. Long term iPhone users invested in the ecosystem: Slightly skeptical but too busy to give further consideration.
3. Privacy focused iPhone users who actually read terms and conditions, value their privacy and understand Apple worships at the alter of money. Profit is the end goal at all costs.

We can't do it so we just paid someone else to do it.
Did you think Apple made Siri? Shazam? Dark Sky? FaceID? TouchID? No, they bough all of it and just oversaw the integration. It starts off as "acqui-hiring” — but like clockwork all the key individuals leave after a year when their non-compete ends.

I honestly can’t believe a company the size of Apple are this far behind in the AI race that they are now having the lean into Google. Apple should be the leaders, not piggy backing from another company. Hugely disappointing from the companies perspective. Great for users though!
