Now imagine doing it with the mapping data all screwed up.

That's the experience for a lot of us in other parts of the world. Do you think we are all making it up?

Five years ago no one had a viable or useful map app in their phones. But now you and everyone else has choices thanks to apple. Do you think we are all making it up?

The fact that Apple is openly hiring ex-Google Map App employees has got to be the icing on the cake for Google.

Apple are busying SUING all these other companies for supposedly "COPYING" their stuff, yet here they are hiring the other company's employees to help make their cruddy app work like their competitor's does.

LOL

I wish I could downgrade back to 5.1.1 right now. iOS 6 sucks. Period.

Oh, but...but... iOS 6 makes the knobs on the volume control have active lighting... LOLOLOL

WHO THE HELL CARES ABOUT KNOBS?!?!?!?!!?!?

But we all know that apple will be the last standing laughing out loud when their map app outranks the rest of them.

Yes, Apple Maps, which is only available on iOS devices, will outrank Google Maps, which are available on every desktop and notebook on the planet, on every Android device, every Symbian device, every RIM device and god knows what else. That sounds a tad too optimistic

Google wants to wait until apple gets enough bad press. Can you not hear them laughing t apple?

But we all know that apple will be the last standing laughing out loud when their map app outranks the rest of them. Google knows this as well, so they are in no hurry.

By then - it won't matter. When/if Apple maps becomes superior - it won't be a bragging point because there will be several "new" and innovative things that will be promoted/marketed.

The reason Apple has "egg" on their face, so to speak is because Maps is an old tried and true application that people have come to rely on and even though it sometimes gets new info/functionality - it's a core App. Until Apple brought their maps back to pre-2007.

When maps become as good or better than google - it won't be a big deal it will just be "oh good. finally."

Because I only use my iPhone for navigating to work every day and the new maps app sucks, I'm going to have to switch to Android. You see, the issue is that I sleep in a new place every night and work in a new place every day, so I can't possibly memorize directions because there's nothing to memorize.

I've heard that in the past people would use a paper map or ask for directions or have a real sense of place that allowed them to navigate, but I just don't believe it.

Apple really should have kept Google maps until their own version was at least useable. It's my one gripe about the new phone...The maps are utterly useless...Why incorporate a BETA version in IOS6? Would have been better to wait and polish the app first.

In my area of the UK the images are truly appalling, I would have happily waited until they had produced something of good quality...It's not as if they don't have the resources, but building a large image database takes time...Remember all those Google trucks?..:)

Do we know if this is really an apple issue? Have we heard if Apple cut out google or if google said sorry we are not licensing our maps to you have the contract has expired?

...

Apple problem is they are a decade behind in terms of quality. If they were a year or 2 behind it would be one thing but they are a decade behind. They are so far behind they will NEVER catch up.

You are using a hyperbole. Thank you for the example.

Most folks in the world did not own a stand alone GPS ten years ago, let lone a map app in any phone. Ten years ago the world was marveling at and dissing the iPod. Today is apple's map app turn.

Should I guess that you dismissed the iPod ten years ago?

I live in Indianapolis, IN, USA. I've been using iOS6 maps since beta 1 and I've travelled to Chicago and parts of Ohio several times over the last few months. I've used Apple's Maps a ton during this time and I can't seem to find the issues people have been complaining about. There are the occasional 3D rendering issue but who cares? It's still far more beautiful than anything Google has put out. And Nav has worked great. Maybe it's worse in other areas. But I'm sure apple is working on improving it. In the mean time, bookmark the mobile google maps if you don't like it. Or download one of the 100 other nav apps from the Apps store.

All this "I'm not buying/upgrading until maps is fixed" seems pretty lame.

Come over to Tokyo and let's talk about this in the cool whisky bar Zoetrope in Shinjuku. Now there aren't street names in Japan, so the quickest way to find it would be to exit out of D5 of Shinjuku station. Walk over to 7丁目. It's just above the back entrance of the 7-11.

All of this info is readily available on the maps in iOS5, so you shouldn't have any problems (if you don't upgrade). None of it's in iOS6.

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic. It certainly sounds like it. So that's how I'll be responding.

There are a lot of alternative methods. None of which will/are native to iOS and are called upon by other apps that would maps. IE - siri, etc.

Also - the point is that Apple, with this release has regressed (far back) in their offering. They are offering an inferior alternative to what they already had and people used/expected.

For now - because no one can predict the future - it's a pretty big deal for some and a pretty big fail for some as well.

If you're not affected, that's great. But your use case isn't the same as everyone else's.

If I were Google, I'd not submit any app at all.

^^^ THIS

I am iPhone loyal & I upgraded to iOS6 on day one. I am not crazy about the new Apple maps app, but I fail to see the reason why Google would even bother to try & rush out a standalone app. Let Apple stew in their error for a few months & maybe they convert some 4 & 4S users to go to Android instead of moving to the 5.

I get that there is a market to be had for Google by being on the iOS platform, but I think that Google executives are sitting back & enjoying the bad press that Apple is getting on this. Maybe they will roll something out in a few months, but for now, I would not hold my breath on seeing anything soon.

Why would Google bother releasing their map app for iOS anyway?
Because google's revenue stream is advertising and they need eyes on glass and all that user information they capture and sell to advertisers to make their numbers.

Apple screwed them over by removing it from iOS.
The voice of someone who was there at the negotiations I take it? Hard to say who was doing the screwing. Maybe Apple. Maybe Google. Maybe both.

If I was Google, I'd make it an Android exclusive and tell Apple to have fun playing catch-up over the next two years while Google Maps gets better and better.

Apple really screwed up on this one. I mean REALLY screwed up.

This is Google's chance to pounce on Apple's eroding reputation.

"Maps" has issues, for sure. Not sure that pouncing buys google very much except maybe short term. If I were google, I'd get the app onto iOS pronto and start capturing all that valuable user data to give to them what gives me money - i.e. advertisers.

TONS of people use Google Maps to navigate. To say it's a non-issue is utter stupidity - it will absolutely affect people's purchasing decisions - especially people who's iPhone 4 contracts are expiring right now and next year at this time when their 4S contracts are expiring...

I don't think anyone is saying it is a non-issue. Some of the more level headed are agreeing that there is an issue and that the best choice, for the moment, is to not panic and see if any of the other mapping apps suit their needs. Google Maps never worked for me because I needed turn-by-turn. Didn't have it, won't ever have it very likely. So I went with another solution than the (at the time) default iOS mapping app.

Apple Maps is the laughing stock of the tech world right now.

I'm not noticing a lot of laughing people ;)

Yea... But most folks do not really care now and even less in the future. Also, those for whom it maters, they know about alternatives. For example, some folks are claiming to get another phone for two years because you know, the map app is soooo bad. Go figure. To each its own I supposed...

Don't plan on Google putting out an app anytime soon. This is the perfect time for them to catch people jumping ship. I doubt they have any plans to help Apple better their iOS.

Nobody gives a damn about the past. They only care about the present and the future.

Heck Apple doesn't even give a damn about the past - they won't put Siri on the iPhone 4 or Turn-by-Turn on the iPad 2, even though the hardware is perfectly capable of supporting it.

Stop living in the past and making excuses for Apple's garbage Map App. Apple's philosophy has been to bury the past with every new device they make. You think they dwell on the past? LOL

They downgraded their flagship mobile operating for selfish, business reasons. Heck, I don't even know if it's truly all business either - knowing Steve Jobs' obsession with destroying all competition and running a tight-knit monopoly... He probably put a note in his will for Tim Cook to sever all ties with Google moving forward, even if it meant making an inferior product.

Too bad for you. Works great or me!

Now, you being in Japan with an iDevice, you're probably a smart fellow. But you are telling every one that you have found no way to overcome your temporary ios6 issues?

Even though Google owns Android, they don't specifically benefit from that platform. In fact they benefit when people use their services no matter the platform they are on. I don't really see why Google wouldn't want their map app on IOS. The real question is, will Apple let them now that they are set on severing ties.

For those who seem to have their world ended because of the new maps app, I give you 200 free Nav apps in the app store.... Your welcome.

First world problems, right?

How many are integrated with phone functionality. How many will Siri rely on when giving their results. How many will be able to set geolocation based appointments/alerts using those maps.

Yes. There are a lot of alternatives. Unfortunately - Apple has dictated that the one that "matters" is the worst of the lot.

Google's product is it's users

Google's product is you, the consumer. They make money selling your data to the advertisers. Their business interest and our is the exact opposite.

That's why I don't trust Google with my data. But than people insist on getting things free gets what they deserved.
