Google's product is you, the consumer. They make money selling your data to the advertisers. Their business interest and our is the exact opposite.

That's why I don't trust Google with my data. But than people insist on getting things free gets what they deserved.

Oh really. What unique data do they sell that Apple doesn't?

You are using a hyperbole. Thank you for the example.

Most folks in the world did not own a stand alone GPS ten years ago, let lone a map app in any phone. Ten years ago the world was marveling at and dissing the iPod. Today is apple's map app turn.

Should I guess that you dismissed the iPod ten years ago?

no. But if someone brought out a new device that was maybe slightly better than the iPod was 10 years ago using the excuse well the iPod had those problems back when it first came out is not acceptable.

So comparing Apple's Maps to Google Maps of 10 years ago is not either.

You compare them to Google's Maps today. Now what it does tell you is that Apple maps are X number of years behind. Being nearly 10 years behind the rest of the pack is a problem.

Nobody gives a damn about the past. They only care about the present and the future.

...

Your statement above is the future we are giving our children. Some even claim the holocaust did not take place...

Not too smart to forget about the past, is it?

Yeah, like they charge for the following iOS apps :

- Youtube
- Chrome
- Gmail
- Google Apps
- Google Earth

Yeah, definately, 4.99$, the same price they charge for all their other apps.

You are right, Google won't charge you a cent. Because to Google you (the consumer) is the product. Google collects and sell your data to advertisers to profit. Their business interest and our is the exact opposite.

Now who is talking hyperbole. The holocaust has no business being in this conversation. The context is important. The OP is talking about the tech world. Not world history.

Just because you keep saying this doesn't make it true.

I'm confused why everyone's complaining so much...It works great. Google has had their share of issues. I submitted a correction for Saville Center in Edmonton, AB. It was off by 20 blocks a year ago.

At least Apple has verbal turn by turn & it recalculates when you go off track.

Apple maps are extremely bad here in Tokyo and users are now desperately looking for alternatives. A maps app, Mapion, has emerged from nowhere to 4th position on top free apps list. Apple better in a way or another quickly get back Google maps as an option before customers start to switching to Android. Happy I didn't update my devices to iOS 6!

This thread is so funny to read. All the people that think Apple is doomed over one app. Really? lol...

As long as they get one out before I take my trip to NYC in a few months.

Google Maps was invaluable in NYC for the subway schedules and routes.

The maps for Raleigh seem to work well enough. I haven't yet found any obscure places that haven't been in the listings, but a lot of people use yelp here (relatively...) Satellite imagery is fine, you can't zoom in quite as close as Google Maps though. The roads and navigation works great.

I think the biggest issue is public transport directions, POI will improve over time as more users submit places and correct locations if they are wrong.

I am laughing at the people complaining about Siri integration with the maps app. First off, Siri blows big donkey balls. It has to go out to the server every time I ask her what time it is or if she can set an alarm for me (things that are simple native requests).

Most of the people who I see complaining about the maps say that they use mass transit. Do you know how big of a tool you look like standing on a bus or railway platform saying "Siri, can you tell me how to get home from here using bus routes?"...then waiting for Siri to search...then waiting for Siri to fail...then saying again into your phone "Siri, how do I get home on the bus?"...waiting...failing...crying "Siri, I wanna go hooooommmmeeee!!!"

All along, you could have just typed it in & had your results in an app...integrated or not.

As someone said in this thread already...these are first world problems indeed.

I'm guessing that Schmidt and Google are thinking that people will defect to Android because of Apple Maps and that's why they are in no rush to provide it on iOS. I doubt that many people will switch to Android over Apple Maps (although I'm sure that some small percentage will).

But Google has already lost over 105 million Google maps users with Apple's move, and there are plenty of great alternatives available on the App Store for people who find Apple Maps troublesome in their area.

Interesting! I live in Manchester/UK and using the third gen iPad. So far Apple maps is crisp and lot more up to date then google maps on my iPhone!!

Take a peek north and you'll notice Bolton, Bury and Oldham are all missing from the map. :D

Okay, the actual towns aren't missing, just the large labels, which doesn't make any practical difference to anything, but what the heck, lets get worked up about it, omgapplefailwheresoldham!!!

No they haven't. Unless you're stating that everyone who has an iOS device has updated to iOS6 and that every one of them is exclusively using Apple's Maps.

Neither of which I believe to be remotely true.

Leaving aside Apple-fanboyism and Apple Kool-Aid consumers, has anyone else noticed that most of the negative press is coming from those who have an irrational and rabid dislike (nay, hatred) of all Apple products. Apple has shortcomings, and has produced some right lemons in the past, but if it didn't have the guts to present its vision through its products, where would we be today?

I've been using Apple's products for years, macs and iphones. I like the products they make when they are good, not when they are crap like Maps. But I guess that makes me a hater these days. I would love it if Maps would have been great, but it's not. It's a totally unusable service in my parts of the world, unlike the service I had on my phone a week ago.

I must be one of the very few who find the Apple map app quite nice. I like the look of the parks/lakes. The icons for the roads are nice. It doesnt seem as busy to me.

Dont get me wrong, I love the google maps app but I find the Apple map program a suitable replacement.

Get over it people.

The last time I used iOS 5's map app it sucked. There was no turn by turn navigation. It was a limited app.

The new app does. It's a basic app that will improve over time.

If you want a rock solid navigation app you'll have to go to a third party and pay for it. I'd use navigon's iOS app any day over apple's.

100 million people have upgraded to iOS 6 already, and Apple has sold over 5 million iPhone 5s that come pre-loaded with iOS 6 and Apple Maps. A LOT of people who do not participate in forums (read: average users) are going to use Apple Maps because it is there rather than add a maps.google.com webapp icon to their home screen. Sure, some of these people also may not go out to the App Store and download the Google Maps app when/if it is available, but I'd think that there would be a better chance of them getting it that way.

Apple Maps DEFINITELY needs a lot of work, but to think that Google is not worried at all about the potential loss of mobile user share is shortsighted in my opinion.

According to Apple, they've had over 100 million users upgrade to iOS 6.
