Two things make the speedometer2 benchmark score a lot higher, first is your ISP connection it’s ~480 Mbps for me, second is how fast is your single core score does, M1 SoC still well.
i have a 2019 2.4GHz 8 core i9 - old slow machine compared to apple silicon. I have 2Gbps symmetric fiber, limited by 1Gbps Ethernet to this computer - so my network's not an issue.

The only takeaway is that safari scores well, but takes much longer if you have extensions enabled. I have a ton of adblock extensions.

Apple's Speedometer 2.1 browser benchmark

I'm pretty certain it doesn't come close to Safari speed of 365 (speedometer)

I'm a bit confused about all of these benchmarks. Using

My numbers are (gigabit ethernet Studio Ultra):

Safari 190 (extensions disabled)
Firefox 197 (extensions enabled)
Chrome 230 (extensions enabled)

Using https://browserbench.org/Speedometer2.1/ I get

Safari 195 (extensions disabled)
Firefox 231 (extensions enabled)
Chrome 256 (extensions enabled)

"Apple's Speedometer 2.1 browser benchmark" is different? If so where does it live?

okay this is weird. I have an older i9 macbook pro - tried safari 16.4 vs chome 111.0.5563.146.

Safari scored 193, chrome scored 185.

But I timed each with a stopwatch - safari took 49 seconds and chrome took 34. It's really strange that the execution time was so much better in chrome, but the score was lower.

EDIT - after turning off safari extensions, speed is about the same. and updating chrome to latest, they have the same score, same execution time.
I get 365 through Safari on my m1 MBP 🤣

I'd switch to Chrome, Edge or FireFox if I could use my iCloud passwords in it. Only thing keeping me on Safari.

There is only 1 speedometer app, something seriously wrong with your studio ultra if all you're getting is 195 on safari😳
This is from my M1 MBP today

Is that your actual experience or are you basing the snappier feeling off the numbers?

I'm asking because I've noticed that the scores don't necessarily correlate with actual browsing speed and comfort, as chrome loads most websites much faster (and better ,if i may) , than safari , in spite of having lower scores

Also what scores do u get on speedometer 2.1 ? Speedometer 2.1 brings parity to gecko as well( previously the test was WebKit and blink optimized iirc)
Actual experience. The scores are based on the speed of a web browser for this test as a HTML interpreter/client.

Safari like any modern web brewer does 5 things
  • HTML interpreter
  • HTTP client
additional functionality
  • CSS interpreters
  • JavaScript interpreters
  • Interpreters / execution hosts for other languages (plugins / extensions)
Also what scores do u get on speedometer 2.1
358 for the M1 24"iMac

Privacy is far more important to me than speed.
There are no Google , Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, etc etc apps on any of my devices. I do NOT trust any of these companies with my data.
If your company blocks me because I have an ad/tracking blocker that is fine with me, I can spend my money elsewhere, and I do.

Thank you very much

I must say ,I don't have great speeds with safari , except on the ipad but that doesn't count since all browsers use WebKit for now

May I ask, do you use dark mode ? And do you know of a good dark mode extension which doesn't inject a **** ton of code in the page ?

Ive tested many dark mode extensions and all of them get me 50% slower scores except for turn off the lights (which honestly doesn't look good at all)

And Brave does it too. Not many people mentioning Brave I noticed. Is Arc the better choice?

Both are excellent choices. Brave is faster, but Arc has more productivity features and the UI/UX is nicer.

I use Arc on macOS, and Brave and Safari are my backups. On iOS, I use Safari.

I see. Thank you. I've signed up to the waiting list.

You can use this link to skip the waitlist. It only will work for the first 5 people who click it and sign up, though.

I user Private Window 99% of the time, Netflix is the only exception, because every time in normal mode you log in results in another warning email to ignore. Its also one of the few hosts that doesn't work in safari Private Window.

Dark Mode selected system settings => appearance only. As you say not all web sites use it. I wish could override that . Mac Rumors works well in Dark mode, wish more sites did. Going to a faster SOC with better single core CPU results is what mostly gets such a high score from speedometer2. The whole deal with private windows is to block cookies, web caches from collecting.

Is chrome still a memory hog? I get by with safari and edge just fine. Safari has been glitchy on my m2 air for some time now.
