When they can do them right 100% of the time, call me.

Absurd quote from a stupid person.

is your iPhone or Mac flawless?

It's a first gen device. But I know that it's especially "bad" because it's a google device.

If you want to say that you don't see value for you in such a device - I'm totally cool with that. Making a general statement akin to it being useless is just short sighted.

Do you really think that you say aloud more personal information than you type into a keyboard?
So please enlighten us as to how much of each medium is sent back and analysed? Something tells me you can’t.

Truth is, there isn't really anything 'AI' about Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant etc. You're substituting voice commands for keyboard or mouse pointer actions and that's about it. Of course, getting voice commands to work as reliably as keyboard or mouse pointer actions is not easy, so there is some sophisticated tech needed.

Apple made a bad decision in my opinion not having a dedicated AI team. They were first but don't have a leapfrog over the opposition in 5 years. In fact compared to Alexa I'd say they're behind!
No team to be accountable over AI.

I quite enjoy my Echos. I have one in my living room and one in my bathroom. I don't use them for much more than to play music, tell me the news & weather and to control my Hue bulbs, but those use cases plus a random question here and there make it worth it to me. With an Amazon Music Unlimited subscription it works really well as a music player.

I considered a Google Home because I like Google Play Music better than Amazon Music, but I think I'm going to keep Amazon and cancel Google Play music when my Amazon trial is up just because of Echo integration. Amazon has done a nice job of getting me more integrated into their ecosystem. When my AppleTV 2 & 3 need to be replaced, I'll seriously consider a FireTV.

Have you tried a device such as this? If not, might suggest giving it a try. I have for almost two years, Amazon Echo, find it to be one of my most useful devices. I will agree, not all technology is for everyone, each has to decide for themselves.

I've had an Echo since they were available as a beta launch. I can't say I'm all that impressed and tend to agree more with the person you responded to. When I first got it I played around with it, but then didn't really use it much. I bet it's been over a month since I've said anything to mine....and I'll bet my last inquiry was the weather forecast.

I also really don't use Siri all that much other than to set a timer or alarm. If I want to search for detailed info, I guess I prefer to search on a screen so I can see the listed results and be able to make some intelligent decisions as to what is and isn't applicable. Maybe it's generational and maybe I'm getting old, but don't really find it all that useful to talk to these things.

Yeah, i just don't see value. I've tried way too many of these products and they all come up too short to be useful for me.

Also, I apologize for calling you stupid. I've since removed that part. Friends?

Better yet, have one built into your phone that goes everywhere with you and call it Siri.... oh wait.

Hm.. You can turn off that option on your phone. But with this kind of device, it's designed to always be listening.

I was excited for the home but I think I'll wait and see what Apple comes out with. Although at that point Google and Amazon will probably be too far ahead. I just want something with good smart home integration that will let me use what services I want.

Like I'm going to have an open microphone in my house and hooked up to google 24/7. That's rich! Dream on...

Just like any other such device, it only sends your voice for a few moments after you enter the magic wake words.

In this case, that means only after you say "Okay Google".

(It'd be a lot more fun if you could change all these device keywords to something else, like "Hey Jarvis" or whatever you wanted.)

I wasn't really offended by your comment. People have different uses cases. I don't consider my echo "invaluable." I can certainly live without it. However like I wrote earlier - it's been great for hands-free info/playing music. I've had bluetooth speakers before that got less "play" time.

I was frustrated with the Echo because so many of my searches were going unanswered. And I don't use Amazon Prime Music. I do have a bunch of songs uploaded for my daughter.

The Google Home is smaller, has greater capacity to cull information from the web and because my whole music library is on Google Play, I will now have access to everything vs a small selection. And being able to search for a video and cast it directly to my chromecast is a nice perk too. For me, I *think* google home - even now with it not uber developed like the Echo has been - will be more useful. We'll see.

You can turn off listening on the Echo and Home devices too - and make it so you "click" the device to put your request in.

LOL I pretty sure I could be competitive on the age. As I said, not all technology devices are for everyone. At least you gave it a good try before dismissing.

I just don't want to ... have my data be used/manipulated for elections.

Explain to me how Google executives getting behind Hillary is different from any other major corporation backing a candidate.

I also love that apparently if people are down on Apple for the lack of innovation, every diehard Apple fan has to try and drag every other tech company down with them. Whether you think this product is applicable for you personally or not, Google is far better in this area and has a MUCH higher ceiling in terms of good this product could be. Apple simply can't compete with Siri right now; it's that simple.
