You are missing the big picture.

This is a way for Google to build a subscriber base and learn about cellular communications. Google wants to provide you with Fiber cable at home and broadband speeds on your smart phone for a great price. They'll make money whether you buy Apple or Android phones.

And when their customer base hits 500,000 or better, they'll either buy one or both, or create their own network.

Google is shaking up ISPs like T-Mobile is with phone industry.

I love gigabit fiber. Been using it for 2 months. The ability to back up 4TB of data in a few hours offsite is amazing! No more waiting a week. It's done in hours.

This is a good thing competition will lower prices.

I'd love to see google offer only unlimited plans $20 dollars a month. Something of this nature.

Be assured that with Google involved with T-mobile and Sprint both these networks will become superior and cheaper to buy service from. Look out ATT & Verizon a new day has come and the customers will be the winners.

I also wonder what is behind the G's move. We know that ultimately they sucked in hardware; Motorola being sold, Google glass is a flop. Chromebooks are OK, I guess it drives traffic to Google services such as Gmail where G puts their ads.

However internet provider?

Makes perfect sense. Control. Period.
You're already using their browser, their mail client, their productivity suite, their cloud. Why not their internet?

Frightening, I know. But I can see where that might interest them.

Yes, I'll take monopoly with a side of world domination, please.

Wow way to inflame nothing

They are leasing the line

Lol

Seriously if apple did this you would be happy !

Lol

Stop using their service!!! That's it! Lol

Fear monger

Next move could be Apple rounding up AT&T and Verizon.

Not possible

Apple stopped innovating

Not really a big deal that MR is making this out to be. Let's remember there ARE already five bazillion little "wireless carriers" who actually don't own their own network, but rather they borrow the bandwidth and infrastructure from existing BIG networks like T-Mobile and Verizon.

Google is not doing anything special that hundreds of other companies have not already done.

If anything… Google is somewhat STUPID to do this, because wireless and cable networks are among the most HATED brands in the entire planet. They have to deal with millions of hateful and dissatisfied customers every single day, 365 days a year. This is a huge risk for Google. If there are network problems beyond Google's control, it is the Google Carrier Brand that will suffer from backlash and customer complaints.

Google is already a household brand name, so doing this to "grow" their brand is not a smart way to grow the brand. In fact, it's a very risky way to grow the brand, because as I said…. being in the carrier/network industry is risking to make your brand a hated one.

hmmm,

if google buys sprint and t-mobile, will it be called Tsoogle?:p

It will be called Screwgled.

and so it begins...

knowing how Apple likes to control the user experience, from start to finish, I can see them one day doing the same thing.

and as cellular speed and bandwith grows they will be poised to go into home internet/cable market.

I always wondered why apple didn't get into the carrier business. They have the money and can build those rediculous expensive cell towers anywhere they want.

maybe because Apple likes to give the customer the best user experience and unfortunately the cellular service business is a difficult one to deliver on.

but apple does like to control the user experience from start to finish and if google is successful, i'm sure they'll think about jumping in.

But how google can control the internet experience on such MVNO?
Making Google.com default search engine?
In light of Apple is doing and Firefox abandoning Google, this is very much possible.
very cheap service but u use Google for search - even if your browser has different options - very much like google.

You are jumping the gun a little bit don't you think?

I mean, how do you know? Google has not announced a single thing. Google has it's hands in a lot of things so for all we know they could end up utilizing Sprint and T-Mobile for things other than phones like the automobile or connected devices..... or they'll do exactly what people are thinking and offer phone and data service with something like all access bundled in.

Let's wait for an official announcement before jumping to conclusions.

If they follow the same roll out speed as Google fiber. Good luck getting it anytime soon. More like never.
Yeah, Google Fiber followed what Verizon did with FIOS. Huge demand for that but Verizon won't expand it.

Don't use them in NY, Orlando or Los Angeles cause you will have a miserable time with service.

You're probably right, TMobile'a service in Los Angeles, Chile is downright nonexistent. On the other hand, their service in the five county greater LA, California region is quite good. The only places where coverage becomes an issue are hillside residential areas away from commercial zones where residents have fought the erection of any additional cell towers.

Yet the existing AT&T and Verizon towers don't bother them.

If google own even 1% of any carrier or ISP I am with I'll change to a new one. Even though the day to day workings of the company, Google will not be responsible for, a % of my bill will go to Google and that I do not want.

If this becomes impossible one day, then my iPhone becomes a wifi iPod touch and I find the lowest cost dumb phone plan I can. As to give less $$ to google.

If you're into the IT rumour game, you jump to conclusions. Everyone does it.

i use an MVNO in japan.
it uses docomo's network.
there is absolutely no difference in speed.
but, the MNVO's talk + data service plans are about 25% of what docomo charges.

i have wanted apple to become an MNVO since way long ago.

it would be great for apple's virtual SIM to be a part of apple's pre-arranged networks in usa, mexico, canada, major countries in europe, japan, and china.
so that you keep the same SIM in yr phone and just use the carriers in apple's pre-arranged networks that are a part of its MNVO network.

Wow this is a pretty big deal. Lower overall prices? Faster overall speeds? Apple getting in the game too? Lots could happen...

How about because they make much more money doing what they do then they would make doing that? That's like asking, why doesn't that rich family ever buy a new car? They got to where they are in life by doing the right things, not by doing the wrong things.

Apple is in the business of making money. Last time I checked AT&T and Verizon make lots of money.

They are already in the industry, you would be lying to yourself if you don't think apple doesn't at least ponder the thought

I like that idea! have you suggested it to apple on their feedback page ?
