Unfortunately, this would be quite handicapped on AT&T's sporadic 3g network. Traveling out of a major metro area, and you're on edge, and the app becomes useless. This is one area where Verizon just owns AT&T. They have SO MUCH MORE 3g coverage. Too bad, because this app looks awesome.

Read previous posts, this wouldn't matter, the route is downloaded and cached at the beginning of the trip.

It's a nice play by google but I don't think it will have a great impact on the market overall. As more cars come with integrated, and specialized, GPS navigation systems the desire for handheld units will start declining. There's an opportunity now but probably not 5-10 years from now.
Of course it's always possible the in-dash system will run Android.

Google Maps Navigation

oh boy this is sweet. Google coming into the navigation market and the price is free.

Currently on the Android 2.0 update but Google is working on getting it on the iPhone. So glad i didnt spend money on navigation app. This should also reduce the prices of the navigation apps on the iPhone to something more reasonably.

Seriously.

It will not come to the iPhone any time soon. Not from Google. Mark my words.
Google and Apple's ties are over.
It is competition now.

This is one heck of a competitive advantage for any Android phone.
So why would Google offer it for the iPhone?
Remember, this app is _free_ on Android. Google would not earn anything by porting to the iPhone (except the user data). Yet it would destroy the Android's advantage.
Forget it.
Not happening any time soon.
Apple must have known this, which is why they bought that other map company...

The two most impressive features:

- Talk to the device and say 'navigate to the King Tut exhibition in San Francisco'.
And the app a) figures out what you actually said, b) searches what 'King Tut' actually means c) searches for a Tutankhamun exhibition in San Francisco d) grabs its address and e) navigates you there.

I know of no GPS system in the world that can do that.

- Streetview while navigating.

Again, no other GPS system in the world does this as no other company has Streetview data.

These two features will not come to any GPS system in a long while.
It will remain an Android exclusive.

Oh well, if Apple ever opened up the iPhone, we could have an Android app runtime specialized to the iPhone and just run whatever Android apps we want.

 not my point. My current Android phone does real time directions to an extent, its not turn by turn but it is just like using the iPhone Maps app for navigation, and there are plenty of 3rd party iPhone window cradles. Its easy for 3rd party vendors to make iPhone cradles, they are nearly all identical in shape. There are a slew of differently shaped Android devices. See where I am coming from now?

OMG DISASTER AVERTED!

There must be thousands of generic cradles out there that will work with most devices. I used one with a similar design with my iPhone 3G AND my HTC Hero.

Rather than buying a custom cradle every time I'm sure mine will last me with many more different phones.

You seem to have missed the part where the story says:
However, Google is working with Apple on bringing it to the iPhone, and it's not ruling out licensing the software to makers of portable navigation devices used in cars throughout the world, said Gundotra, vice president of engineering at Google for mobile and developers. The process involving Apple is slightly different from the usual App Store submission process, because Maps is a built-in iPhone application, he said.

It won't come to the iPhone Apple will claim it already repeats functionality and Steve will decide for you whether you need it or not. LOL!!!!!! :D

Well, OS X is a direct descendant of NextSTEP which in turn comes from Mach and BSD. BSD itself comes from the 70s, and overall Unix comes from the 60s so.... yeah.

Well I know it's technically correct. In that sense my code (DNA) is based on that of a shrew from 220 million years ago with multiple changes and additions, but we still share a great majority of DNA. My point is that OSX is as much based on 60s unix code as my 'code' is based on a shrews'.

My iPhone is based on a Simon Says because they both use digital technology.

This little discussion has already gone way farther than I wanted it to.

If that works for you, good deal. I am a custom fit kind of guy, I tend to only use things specifically tailored for my devices. It looks, well, less ugly.

Yeah, kind of drooling over that myself. Only drawback is the requirement for an internet connection, but for me, this should be perfect for a 'most of the time' navigation app. Hope it doesn't take TOO long to get it for iPhone.

You seem to have missed the part where the story says:
Yes I did miss this one.

Though it doesn't make sense.
Why would Apple then buy a map company for its data? If Google is so willing to share?

I'd bet the iPhone version will lack a few features...

But let's hope it won't!

F*ck me... It's a car cradle.

I like to watch the road whilst driving, not swooning over a car cradle.

I know of no GPS system in the world that can do that.

yeah, well... if it works as well as the current google maps, apple has nothing to worry about.

maps gets things COMPLETELY wrong on my phone about 45% of the time.

so yeah, the idea is good... but i have zero confidence that something like this will work with any regularity.

all that looking things up on it's own? no way will that work consistently. or not any time in the near future, for sure.

This could simply replace Google Maps and then destroy all the other GPS apps out there. Shame, competition would only help these apps, but I don't see how other GPS apps like Navigon and Tom-Tom could survive for free. Maybe we'll just see big price cuts or maybe we won't see this on the iPhone at all.

I think its becoming very clear how serious Google's plans are to make a statement in this upcoming market. Eclair is a great step forward for Android and as they continue to develope programs and apps associated with their OS they will have success. Everyone uses something from Google on their smartphone.

Finally! I always thought that nothing is better than Google Maps, and that it would be stupid to not use it in a GPS! And now it's here, I just hope it will get on the iPhone soon, can't see why it would take a lot of time, the program is already finished!
