Google missed the boat here and copied the wrong thing.

This isn’t about a bundle of games for 5 bucks a month. Apple worked with game developers to curate an amazing set of games with broad appeal. Google just copies the bundling and prices, not the content strategy.

But then again, Google has never been one for good taste.
You assume consumers will know the difference. The people on these boards generally don’t fall into that group. Most things like this sell, not because they are good, but because they are there. No effort from Google. All reward. Win-win.

It's not competing. Android gear can't run Apple Arcade games - and vice versa

That would be the case if there were more exclusive titles for google’s service. From the ad it looks like a lot of the games are already available on both platforms.

"Google has been working on the Play Pass service since 2018". Who copied who?

Also, we don't know when Apple actually began work on Apple Arcade. It was announced Summer 2019 but I'd imagine it's been in the works for quite a while, considering all the games had to be developed.

who's going to pay $4.99 for a "Play Pass" service when most Android users just use the "Five Finger Discount" pass and whine about anything that costs them money or when their pre-paid phone runs out of minutes and data

Paying developers for use time? So a developer can expect what, one penny per play?

How does this "compete"? IOS users can't choose Google's service and Google/Android users can't choose Apple Arcade.

And I know of NOBODY who would choose their phone based on which game service is available.

I knew this was going to happen. Google will always make it seem like a better deal in comparison. But quality control and standards are higher in the Apple world to me, from the surface at least.

I think Apple's strategy with Arcade and supporting Xbox and PS4 controllers is to chip away at the gaming console manufacture's business. Why buy a PS4 or Xbox when the same games are available at Apple Arcade, same controllers, and with an iPad Pro, you can stream to the TV and play the same games with a much more powerful processor?

There is no way that gaming on iPhone/iPad/Apple TV is a replacement to console gaming if you are actually serious about gaming. Definitely not with the current games on the App Store.

I'm sure Apple didn't just come up with Apple Arcade a few weeks ago either. It does make you wonder who planned it first and who just responded based on rumors. Apple usually takes a long time to come up with anything, so I'm guessing they've been courting developers for some time now.

On average it takes a good 4 years for frameworks to mature and become public so that should give you an idea of how long they had Arcade in the design process.

Apple's service will work on iPhone, iPad, aTV and OSX, limiting the games to higher-end new titles.

It's clear to me that Apple is aiming at quality and Google at quantity, again.

I guess it depends on how things turn out. I think the gaming industry will follow a trend similar to TV Shows, where now it's all about the subscription wars and which company can land deals with content creators. Gaming could be going through a similar transition, where the software developers contract out their work to Apple, Google, Samsung, whoever else decides to start an Arcade-like subscription service.

At the end of the day, PS4/Xbox is a platform for games. People buy the PS4/Xbox hardware to access that platform of games, cause there's not much value in the platform itself but the games. Apple is probably realizing that, they can make their platform more attractive by luring gamers into the platform.

This is already happening before either of these services from Apple or Google launched. Both Microsoft and Sony have exclusive titles that can only be played on their platform, For other games, one console gets DLC before the other, and Xbox has the "Game Pass" subscription service.

As some else said, for serious gaming, Microsoft and Sony have nothing to worry about for the foreseeable future
