This product is the future. This product is more revolutionary than the iPhone when it was introduced. It might not have a consumer market yet but I can think of so many uses in a professional environment. I can't wait to try this out!

People can bash this all day long, but that's a shallow perspective. What they fail to realize is how this type of development moves the needle forward. Technology improves, lessons are learned, and one day, the world will be a better place as a result. So, bash all you want, but let's be thankful that Google is "wasting their time on this". 10 years from now, you won't see it that way.
It is not the technology per se, but I don't trust companies like Google and Facebook moving the needle forward.

And how many on here will be praising this wonderful new never seen before innovation when Apple launch ‘their’ augmented reality smart glasses? Repeat with the oh so fantastic Siri /S.

These are a cool useful idea in the workplace, but I can’t see them taking off in any other walk of life..?

My first instinct hearing this: they hear internal rumblings at apple about them being close to production for THEIR ar headset so they want to get ahead of them

...won’t work

Reiiigggghhhhtttttt so totally completely and utterly choosing to ignore or refuse it existed Google’s previous AR glasses then? The ones that were out wwaayyyy before ANY rumours of Apple making some.!!

If it doesn’t have the fruit logo on it, it’s tech that simply doesn’t exist, right?

I mean it’s simply impossible Google could have this planned for a few years and have been working in them for some time and they are now production ready right? No that would be silly...

Rather then assume the ONLY reason they’ve launched them now is because Apple are ‘rumoured’ to be working on glasses themselves...

"Edition 2". Some of you guys are so drowned in the pro Apple world you don't even know what's going in the tech world. Please stop commenting on technology if you have a one track mind.

Another hardware failure from Google.

I fear so. In part because they still look stupid. And folks are still going to be put off by the whole ‘projecting the image into your eye’ thing.

Now if they made it looks like those glasses without the weird add on and they could put the image on the lens they might get somewhere. Especially if they could find a way to obscure the image from the ‘outside’. It would be very Tony Stark in Avengers and such and folks would probably jump (depending on price etc)

so is apple working on a similar product for gaming purposes, or are they aiming for the "pro" market?

We don’t know that Apple is really working on a similar product but I suspect that if they are it will be gaming, walking directions, translations etc. basically a HUD for your iPhone

i honestly hope if they are working on one, it will be just for gaming. people look so incredibly stupid walking around wearing those...

Oh so great to record all interactions within the office confines and time. You have a harassment claim filed against you, let’s look at that digital footage, yep it happened and you are a liability, don’t bother coming in on Monday permanently. This could be used against the sexes. Just a thought.

Can we really call Glass "augmented reality"? The way I see it, Virtual Reality is an independent world which entirely envelops the user's field of view. and Augmented Reality is virtual information/design imposed upon the real world in front of the viewer. Glass is just sort of information placed in the corner of the field of view, and it doesn't interact with or modify (or, you know, "augment") anything in the real world.

Glass is just a heads-up display with a camera built onto a glasses frame.

Privacy concerns, a person who is being interacted with does not know what audio or video is being recorded or if the thing can be hacked remotely without recording notification being triggered.

Imagine doctors doing surgery, being able to see an AR overlay of the internal organs. This tech may not make much sense in consumers' hands, but their are several fields where it will be invaluable.

Wait until Apple "validates" this with their own AR glasses.

Surgeon are already doing surgery via robots and some remote. This solves nothing, it’s an impedance to ones attention, just like people looking at their cell phones and walking and crossing on the streets without looking.

If it looks like a pair of glasses (which is more what Jony would likely design) they wouldn’t look that stupid. And walking directions etc make more sense for AR than games.

Now VR for games would be a different situation. And if they did hardware more like the Oculus Go than the PSVR (which is really not that comfy) they could score

Edition 2: what like 5 years later and a product that made zero cultural impact that everybody deemed a failure? The shining example of how NOT to do glasses? And also a product that was literally banned in some places of business because of privacy concerns?

Oh yes. THAT super successful product was totally deserving of a 2nd version! How could I have forgotten? And as we will all see, this product in no way will change to be anything like apple’s version when they release theirs.

Quick edit: just googled when the first version came out and had to correct myself. Correction. It released in 2012 so it’s not “like 5 years”. More like 7

i guess. it's kind of sad though - people have less of a need to learn anything each day. this will help uber drivers drive around without knowing their ass from their elbow... rant rant rant)
