This phone craps on the features of the iPhone, and at a fraction of the cost! Also love how Google is focusing on underrepresented groups (translation services, pictures for POC). This shows that Google building a product for everyone, while Apple only tries to build an exclusionary wall focused on the rich and well off.
Just curious where does that put the samsungs, Tesla?
Good question.

Yet that 6gb ram leaves the pixel for dead 24/7
Highly doubt it, the 12Gb on the Pixel will surely perform better. Hardware is hardware, there's no magic to overcome such a huge difference of available RAM. 12GB is also way more than any Android phone would need so I sustect Google went with it for future proofing.

Oh, the iPhone 13 pro max also has a smaller battery than the pixel 6 pro, yet it will destroy the pixel 6 pro when it comes to battery life.
Highly doubt it as well.

What in God’s name are you talking about? Underrepresented groups? Wtf? It’s a goddamn phone, not a panel discussion on gender stereotypes at the UN.

The Pixel line just feels like it lacks purpose. It had a splashy entrance years ago with computational photography, but now it doesn’t seem to serve a purpose at all

Considering that the Samsung smart phone really don't get great battery life vs. their competition. Could you imagine having a Tesla that has poor EV range. So no Samsung is not like Telsa at all.

Who out there is in the market for a $2.5K laptop? Certain professionals and rich people that's it. For everyone else, this announcement is much more relevant to them than yesterday.
This announcement is relevant to folks that have Pixel phones or ones that want Pixel phones. Given the marketshare of the Pixel phone, it IS likely that, tiny though it may be, those that find a $2.5K laptop relevant is greater than those that find a Pixel phone 6 relevant.

The big problem with Pixel phones, as far as I can tell, isn’t so much that they’re not terribly compelling vs an iPhone, it’s that they’re not terribly compelling vs other Android flagship phones. The “better camera” angle hasn’t given Google phones much market share, nor has the “stock Android” angle. I’m not sure whether on-device AI really will, either (especially since Google’s AI software has mostly been cloud-based before this, which brings up issues with differences in bottlenecks and constraints between cloud/server based AI workflows and local AI workflows).
Today’s Google event felt kinda odd with the shots they were taking at the entire Android market. Almost like Intel’s recent video ads. Just a little weird.

Software can can help a LOT with memory usage. For example, the OS and hardware of the iPhone is designed for efficient and fast garbage collection. As a result, you don’t have to have a huge amount of memory because unused memory is constantly being provided for use. Understanding how Android’s garbage collection works, it makes sense that it would need 12GB as compared to an iPhone’s 6.

Of course, if you’re loading a 6 GB data set, physical memory is CERTAINLY good to have then. And, for every time a phone has to load that much data to work with, the Pixel’s likely to be faster. I just don’t know how often that’s going to be.

“Surely perform better” as compared to what?

The Pixel 6 Pro has a 5004 mAh battery vs 4352 mAh in the iPhone 13 Pro Max. I sure hope the Pixel 6 Pro has long battery life considering the size of the battery it is using.

I have not seen any issues with my iPhone 13 Pro Max in terms of having 6 GB RAM. iOS is very efficient with its resources. The previous Google 5A only had 6GB RAM. So where was this careful future proofing, that you mention, for the previous Google phones. I highly doubt Google is thinking about future proofing. It is more likely that Google determined that it needed the extra RAM for its phone to function the way they wanted it to. From what I can tell also, Google is still only giving 5 years of security updates for their phones.

Google raised the prices on their new phones by $150. I guess Goggle isn't giving anymore free lunches except at their cafeterias. So now the customer is both required to pay for the product and at the same time also becomes the product. Imagine that.

The 6 looks like a bargain when compared to the iPhone 13. The 6 Pro looks like not so much of a bargain compared to the iPhone 13 Pro, but that is a zoom lens - we‘ll see how good. In terms of photography I think Google will continue to edge with stills but there’s not a lot of talk about video.... Again, we‘ll see.

You didn't watch the event. Google's cameras are much better at taking accurate pictures of darker skinned people using AI, and live translations through the camera app or text messages improves communication and brings people together.

I am confused. What do they mean by privacy in Google phones? Everything you do on it will be scanned and tracked right? Just like how everything on G Suite is scanned and tracked for the personalized ads. Is it safe to assume these Google phones will do all the scanning and tracking and even more? and that's why they can lower the price right?
If I was gay, I wouldn't care if a company tracked me and knew I was gay. Tim is just projecting when he talks about privacy.

Google already does CSAM and for a while now. I guess you feel safer with Google. And Googles track record with privacy is suspect at best. I much prefer to purchase products not be the product.

Wait there's more. Microsoft created a specialized tool to help detect CSAM.

This part is very interesting:
Microsoft took the lead in creating a tool, PhotoDNA, that used Prof. Farid’s work to identify CSAM automatically.

In its earliest days, Microsoft used PhotoDNA for their services internally and, in late 2009, donated the technology to NCMEC to help manage its use by other organizations.

Where is the outrage from these same people to Google and Microsoft using advanced photo scanning techniques for CSAM. And they have been doing that for years.

Maybe we will get this in iOS 16?
