Love Dell but jealous of your friends using a **** keyboard with a high failure rate that a company took years to acknowledge and fix? That they spent anywhere between 1300–2500? Theres a laptop for that.

It goes both ways. Cut it out already and let people use what they like to use and what works for them. ****ing christ.
It's a joke. If you're raging to the point of cursing over a post about phones something is wrong 🤦‍♂️

I get that hating on Google and loving on Apple for privacy reasons is the "in" thing right now - especially on a MacRumors thread.

I was all-in on Google and then spent about 1.5 years "de-Googling". Guess what? It was MUCH more difficult to feel in control of my data than it was when I was all in with Google. Why? Because in spite of their privacy stigma, they give you extremely granular control of how they use your data, and a lot of more "private" services do not. They also send you reminders to check all of your privacy settings regularly, even ones that you can turn off so they can't use the info any more.

I'm not all in with them, but I've found a healthy balance. I like Apple's privacy stance, but Google is not all bad in this area...

It's easier to let Google have your data because they make it that way. It's literally their business. As a consumer if you're okay with it there's nothing wrong with it. Only you can decide what's right for you.

I'm ok with people being educated about how the services really work, rather than repeating a narrative that they may or may not really know anything about.

If by "make it that way", you mean they provide solid services for you to send them your data (like Photos and Gmail), I don't see how that's really any different than other companies doing the same. I forgot to mention in my last comment, but they also don't mine Gmail for ad revenue purposes any more, and that's by far their biggest service (edit: biggest non-search service :)).

So, serious question. With Google One, has Google finally resolved the fact that there's no comparison to an iTunes or iCloud backup?

In other words, much like how we can buy a brand new iPhone and have everything exactly where we left it, has Google finally caught up in that regard?

It's a step in the right direction, but not quite there. I'm not sure if Android could ever get all the way there due to more moving parts between phones. For Apple/iCloud, backup and restore is easier because a new device really just means a new shell - the brains/guts are still the same... it's almost like a system image restore.

I would like a preferences toggle that would say "Keep this iPhone, and all devices attached to this Apple ID, completely Google Free" toggling this to ON would prevent any App that sends any data to Google from doing so.

So what is the difference between Google Photos and Google Drive ... and Google One?

Is google trying to kill off Google Photos and Drive ?

Google One has been the administrative application for people with the extra Google storage.

It's likely they're going to do some merging to make everything accessible through one app. Later, they'll come up with something else that REALLY takes care of that.

Google really, really want all the data on us they can. They'll keep on taking everything they can until there is nothing left to hide from them.
Resistance is futile. Prepare to be assimilated by the Borg. You know you can't avoid it forever.

Being a certified GOM (Grumpy Old Man), I'm going to carry on avoiding having as little to do with google as possible.
I have found that even when using my iPhone and iCloud email, everything that I talk about in emails to my best friend who uses Gmail on her PC and her Samsung phone gets sifted. I can tell because the ads I see when I use Apple News or visit blogs whose ads can get past my ad blockers reflect the content of our discussions. Like we will talk about my mom’s health problems and I find myself inundated with ads about arthritis or hearing loss or dementia.

I have tried to persuade my friend to use her iCloud account for emails but she says she does not like it.

I do have gmail accounts and use a Google account to backup my Android devices. I’ve got my own google preferences set to not target me and they don’t seem to. I’m definitely targeted somehow, on my iPhone and iPad on an Apple service, via my friend’s gmail account.

It is creepy how that seems to work. I can’t control how my friends choose to handle their accounts and as their contact my privacy is vulnerable through them.

Cut it out already
These are discussion boards, not try-to-silence-your-opposition boards. You wouldn’t want anyone trying to silence you just because they disagree, would you? People should be free to state their opinion about a product, debate if they want, then move on.

I already use Google Drive 200 GB storage subscription for backing up Photos of my iPhones(Two) to in addition to 50 GB paid storage in iCloud. Also I use OneDrive subscription. The iCloud 50 GB is the most useless of these due to the fact it is restricted to iDevices and higher storage options are expensive considering its limitations. I couldn’t store WhatsApp backups in common cloud storage, otherwise I might as well leave iCloud subscription altogether. Hope this paves way for that.
You can use iCloud for Windows too. I think it launched sometime last year. I access files from my Mac/iPhone and Surface.

Are you putting that much faith in google and consistently delete backed up photos from your phone? My wife along has 600Gb of photos. iCloud allows us to use the photo optimization option and still have all her photos in the photos app. We do also have google photo 2TB plan. So we back up into two places. I don’t think I can trust just one.

yet another way to toss your stuff (or secrets) - into the ether
some people call it options some people call it redundant

Another failed Google app that be phased out in a few years leaving users screwed. When will they learn?

At the same time seems like a variety of Google services that many people have been using for years and years are still there and working.

Come on. Both are pretty fair jabs at huge companies. It’s funny.

Which is the point I was making previously, but there’s always the judgemental and self-righteous, “you let Google have your data?!” people. Meanwhile, you go to an Android forum and it’s the, “you pay Apple’s ridiculous prices?!” people.

I just don’t understand the judgment. You use the products and services that you like and pay the price for them that you’re comfortable with. No matter what you choose you’re no more of a sucker than anyone else. Either way someone is profiting off of you. That’s how commerce works.

Good luck with that. Lets give ALL phone data to Google to sift through.....not. Not a chance I would use this

It'll be Google One Photos Drive
Cancelled by 2022
Should be abandoned by Christmas!
I say this with all due respect, but have you all been living under a rock for the last couple years? Google One is an umbrella service that contains Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. Those are all heavy-hitters in Google's arsenal - no way any of them are being shuttered.

It might seem cool to feign ignorance, but I find it embarassing. Do yourselves a favor and at least know what you're talking about before taking pot-shots at it. ;)

Not sure how that relates to my quoted post, but it can be adjusted to Google One Gmail Photos Drive.

One app to gather it all!

I’ve had the exact opposite experience - ever since I de-googled my entire household, I’ve found it dramatically easier to keep track of what data is collected and for which purposes. Google makes it deliberately difficult to find all the settings required to limit data collection. And if you own google products, disabling data collection isn’t even an option - as turning off some of the worst offenders instantly cripple your experience with google products. I maintain that google is the single biggest threat to online privacy in the world and they’re the most dangerous company in the world. I want absolutely nothing to do with them.
