Actually I CAN think of a couple of things Apple should really copy Android on. No adverts (Apple you are not an advertising company, my iPhone is NOT YOUR advertising space!) and two, the ability to DELETE or MOVE the system apps, like I don't know, Newsstand! I will never use it, you won't make money from me with it.

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't samsung also contribute a whole lot to South Korea's economy alone? People here talk as if samsung is only a mobile company.

Ahh, so true. You would think by now the iPad buying public would agree with the above, but apparently home screen info is not relevant to a good user experience. iPad dominates and has been dominating for three generations of tablets.

And all this time I thought Apple was the company that sold me products I didn't know I wanted until I saw them.

Guess they should change their slogan to "Here. It's been selling. It's good enough".

Apple is more valuable, but Samsung has 2.5 times the revenues (100 Billion vs 250 billion).

Samsungs Mobile Division is just an average size division inside the Samsung Group - Samsung also accounts for (afaik) 20 per cent of South Koreas exports (!), which explains why the rulings in South Korea are always very favourable for them :)

I kind of thought Apple was being a dick until I read the justification for the law suit... That Apple spent > 5 years and countless money developing and perfecting the iPhone before the first one came out. And then those copycats at Samsung stole it in just 3 months. That is BS, and I'm glad Samsung got the shaft.

Google has cause to be very worried. Phone manufacturers are going to run as far away as they can from iPhoniness altogether, and they'll all be running toward Windows phones. This is a huge win for Microsoft.

They didn't invent notifications but they did patent the notification (pull down) bar.

They haven't successfully patented it yet...

Android Police Article

It still likely has a few months of negotiations to run and has to beat prior art and obviousness challenges. The article also describes how Apple may sidestep the patent anyway.

Question now is will Apple innovate again? iOS has been same for 5 years. Boring.

They just spent millions defending that 5 year old look. I doubt it will take a radical turn anytime soon.

Do a google search and you'll see that Android was only released in beta 6 months after the iPhone press conference, so there was no ... rolls eyes and tuts

Google stupidly chose Android, which is slow, junky technology.
Google stupidly let Android be used on variety of screen sizes.
Google stupidly let Samsung embarrass it.
Google stupidly is stupidly sticking with Android.

Google is stupid.

Since when radical change IS innovation or anything New?
Pick up a dictionary and look for innovation.

Apple is a very conservative regarding change for change sake ( which is nothing BUT done for deceiving ).

It's also bad design.

Someone in my family whom isn't tech Savii bought an android because she walked into a shop and the sales person told her too. She brought it to me because she couldn't work out how to answer it. So I set it up for her and I learned something as a Mac/iPhone user. I made the right choice. I couldn't believe how messed up the galaxy interface was. I couldn't get her phone to even auto connect to the wifi. I had to teach her how to turn it on every time she walked in the door! I doubt that's ever happened though. It was a confusing mess with fragmented design language. I'm a trained industrial designer and I would be ashamed to be associated with that project regardless of all this legal action.

I completely agree with this... LET ME USE MY PHONE HOW I WANT TO APPLE

So is everyone around here, it seems. You can't go 5 posts without someone screaming they're some tech professional who knows exactly what they're talking about.

...a statement usually followed shortly thereafter by a "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING".

So let me say, as a complete and total uneducated nimrod who breathes through his mouth, I find the (later versions) of Android to be put together quite decently. The ICS/JB UI guides the eye even better than the admittedly well designed iOS.

Also, I could make a comment on "Savii"...but I'm not.

You must be joking, don't you?

And following totally unbelievable claims

Five years is a rather long time in the smartphone industry, but not really in terms of establishing a brand. Changing designs is something that should be made with care, so that you don't alienate your users and what expectations they have when they approach your brand. And when it comes to Apple, a brand that places an unusually strong emphasis on its design, I unfortunately don't think we'll see anything major here "soon".

Even less so with Tim Cook recently having taken charge. He probably wishes to keep things similar for a while longer so that attention isn't wrongfully given to him as a CEO rather than to an evolving Apple brand.

Looking at OS X, Apple did change the design regularly in the past, however. Around every other few OS X releases in the past (~3 years per design change) up until Leopard. I don't think much has changed since then; only minor UI details. The only notable change really just being interfaces lifted in from iOS. So it seems that even in the OS X world, Apple is more "careful" now?

Just checked and you can't. It has no mention of Newsstand or iAds.

There is so much recycled crap and FUD on this thread it's pathetic. And if I wasn't laughing so hard at the absurdity of it all - I would respond to each of the posters who haven't bothered to read any of the other threads that discuss Android and iOS and who also can't separate fact from fiction.

Enjoin it while it lasts

Apple up 2% or about $13.00 is a $13B increase. Samsung is down about $12B.

The award was $1B and may be trebled and will certainly be appealed and delayed for at least a year and may eventually be reduced, or even a new trial ordered.

So perception trumps reality. The tail wags the dog.

Rocketman

Believe that if you like, but the trial is not, was not, and will in the coming days clearly not be about the money, and not about the specific products already targeted. It is about permission to stop, delay, entangle, and complicate future sales of infringing products.

Word of the day: injunctions.
