you mean the beta versions aren't polished yet? Of course not, just like the beta versions of Google maps was not polished before it was released.

I will make judgement with GM, but I am encourged by the improvements between beta 3 and 4.

I still think they should of worked with Google to improve google maps app on iOS. Had they been able to add a similar feature set that is currently on Android, it would be orders of magnitude better than Apple Maps now(Google Nav is STILL in beta and it is polished)

Therein lies the problem, Apple is cutting ties with google. I am not convinced about it being orders of magnitude better, I've used both and Apple maps is working fine for the first iteration. Most people just need directions, good search about what is around the area. Anything more that that is bonus.

Again. We well wait and see the GM, and then make a decision as to wheter I need to download the google maps app.

Google maps

google maps and youtube all the way. that will be the first thing I download when i get ios 6 or maybe I will give 6 a skip and go for 7 when that comes out.

maps on ipod touch

running the new maps on ipod touch, it seems it can cache quite a bit more.

the maps are actually usable without a wi-fi connection.

:apple:

I meant beta 4....sorry, but my point still stands, it was much better than beta 3.

I am saying that it is improving, and the GM will be better. Lets see the final version, we didn't beta test googles pre-released versions.

Let just wait and see the final product.

Agreed, but I don't think Apple Maps will be perfect (or at least nearly so) till iOS 7. Apple Maps in iOS 6 will be good, but always lacking.

Google Maps all the way right now

I do accept that Apple makes brilliant easy to use products, however, the most basic thing in Maps app is details!

Period, I cant use Apple Maps in India as there are hardly any details; if I give it a comparison to Google Maps, then it does not even displays 20% of the details that google maps has to offer.

I am waiting for google to release their google maps app, as I miss it badly!

short question: could anybody of the iOS 6 users post a screenshot of innsbruck, AUSTRIA?!

would be superb! :)

I have to say that while I have been very skeptical about Apple's Maps I have found the traffic feature to be very useful. Specifically how it show accidents and provides details. It's assisted me a couple of times already in avoiding traffic jams or getting into the ideal lane on the fwy.

I have to admit, I stopped using [Google] Maps over a year ago. I've been using Mapquest for turn-by-turn and found it superior to Maps. I can have multiple stops, it re-routes of you miss a turn and generraly is better, especially with the latest release.

I do use Maps for 2 things. First, transit or walking directions. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it misses the mark, but I've used it when travelling with success. Second, for search. Mapquest doesn't always figure out business names or misspelled addresses. I'll search in the [Google] Maps app, copy the address and paste it into Mapquest.

I already find the Google version lacking. If Apple's is better, I'll switch. If not, I'll stay with Mapquest, which is free.

Instead of showing such distaste for a known well working app, why not wait until the other one you love so much is actually past the beta stage?

I never showed distaste for Google Maps at all. Go back and reread my post and stop making up lies. Love? Why yes I do love Apple too. Thank you for reminding me.

I'll just echo KDParker's posts here: Yes, it's beta, just like Google Maps before. Just like every piece of new software before it  I'm curious. Did you show "distaste" for Google Maps when Mapquest was still the dominant maps service and Google was first starting?

Personally I didn't like the google maps in iOS cuz it didn't have turn by turn navigation. You always had to hit the next arrow for the next turn an had to pay attention to the map on where you were which in my opinion is very unsafe for someone to do while driving. So on my opinion it wasn't useful at all. So this new apple maps app in iOS6 is more useful already. Now if it can route me better than Waze then I'll switch.

I'm not sure about Google Maps but Apple Maps caches maps you've visited before. I just spent two weeks in France and after viewing the maps on wifi, I was able to navigate around with no wifi or 3G.

This is a great news! Is there any control over that? Like serious
"offline maps" feature, that would be really great.

No, there is no Android-esque feature to control what gets cached and how long. But it does seem that cities you've visited stay cached indefinitely.

Edit: just tested this. I was in France last week and haven't looked at the map of Nice since I got back. I flipped my iPhone onto Airplane Mode, and was able to browse the map of Nice down to the highest level of detail. No idea how long that'll stay there.

Google Maps. Singapore isn't the biggest place in the world, so although the directions may not be the fastest, they work just fine.

The Google Maps app was way better. Much more responsive, much smoother, better layout, less ugly.

I don't really mind, as long as the level of detail on Apple' are at least as good as Google's. Unfortunately early indications are that they may well not be, especially outside the US.

As a cartographer I can't help noticing they've messed up the icon though - suggests you can turn left from one road going over another. Shoddy! :D

I'll just keep using Waze. Works great for me. I'll give AM a try, for the heck of it, but so far I'm really happy with the results I get from Waze.
Tried Waze for 10 minutes until I realized it had ancient map data... went back to TomTom. The concept of Waze is phenomenal, though... just needs better map data.

From my personal experience, Google Map will be heavily missed by most of iOS users. It just works.

Apple Maps provides some nice features, like 3D map, but it's still very far from Google map regarding to detail level of map.

I also doubt that it will catch up Google map in near future. Apple have lots of cash on hand. It won't be a problem for them to get map information from company like TomTom or Garmin, as long as they are willing to spend. Since Apple plan to remove Google Map for a while, they should have time and money to make Apple Map good enough by now. But to be honestly, outside of some major cities, Apple Map in iOS6 GM is really not informative enough.

I expect lots of complain after formal release of iOS6.

Really? I've never had a problem with wrong/outdated info in Waze. I wonder if living in SoCal has anything to do with it?

Interesting...
