Will apple maps be an improvement on iphone 4

I won't be getting the turn by turn features of the new apple maps on my iphone4. I'm wondering if I might actually lose functionality if I upgrade. Are the more 'basic' features of apple maps better than google?

No.

Google Maps is better on almost all accounts at this moment.

This is not true. Apple maps is fine for the average user with some improvements over google maps in my opinion.

And yes...u still get turn by turn directions.

I have apple maps running on an iPhone 4 (IOS6 GM) and I have turn by turn. All the basic features of google maps are there and working with apple maps.

That's good news. Apple doesn't differentiate between 'turn by turn' and 'flyover' in it's small print at the bottom of the ios6 page. That's where I'm getting my misleading information.

Google Maps is far superior.

I've owned every iphone model and may move to something else solely because of google maps.

That would be silly. I like google maps too, so I have been very concerned about the prospect of losing it. But after using apple maps (beta4/GM), I have found that I don't miss google maps at all.

Now that iOS 6 GM is out, can someone please confirm on Apple Maps:

- Are walking directions available?
- Are transit directions available?
- How is the satellite image quality when zoomed in compared to Google Maps?
- (Bonus question) Are Apple Maps available offline?

I ask because the first two things are essential to my daily routine as I don't own a car.

Thanks!

I am really looking forward to having driving directions on my iPhone but I am a bit concerned about walking directions since everyone here are complaining about the quality of the maps. I rely heavily on walking directions for my job so it would really suck if I had to visit Google Maps in the browser. How detailed are the maps, particular in europe? Can you find every address and street number?

Google Maps data is very superior. From satellite imagery to transit info to street names, Google has a much more comprehensive collection. Apple Maps is really a downgrade besides for turn-by-turn and Flyover.

Oh yeah, and no Streetview.

I disagree with statellite imagery, transit info and street names. I have noticed no difference.

Not sure about other parts of the country, but my area is mapped completely.
Now there is no Streetview, but that hardly makes google maps 'very superior'.

I am a big google maps fan, but once it was gone I didn't miss it at all.

"I have noticed no difference, therefore there is none."

There's a BIG difference. Compare the imagery and cartography of any location. As for walking directions or public transit directions, there is NONE.

The only thing Apple Maps has over Google Maps right now is Yelp integration and Flyover. This isn't my opinion, it's a fact. Go look at other threads bemoaning the sparse detail and lack of information.

Wait.. So Apple Maps has transit directions?!?

Ahhh....the snarky response....

They never claimed it would be built in like Google...and just wait until people use an integrated 3rd party transit app that serves their area. The praise will be unlimited. They didn't integrate it for a reason....the correct reason....Google transit sucked...

The Mapping technology that doesn't have advertisements is the one I want.

The mapping technology that doesn't place local towns 6 miles away from where they should be is the one I want.

I am just relating my experience with it. Works perfectly fine for what I use google maps for. Going from one place to another, whether driving or walking.
I also use the search function to when I need to find some stores in my locally.

I don't really use mass transit, but I am sure that will be addressed.

I like how you found some more advantages for apple maps in this post :)

I'm glad that you haven't found a problem with it, but you can't expect to represent the millions of users than will soon be using it on a daily basis.

All I'm saying is that it is a downgrade, in a big way. Whether you find it adequate or not is irrelevant. And a promise that current issues will be resolved in the future is hardly reassuring.

I didn't claim to represent the millions of users, but those that use google maps like me, might not have that big of an issue with switching.

I hope Apple continues to improve its maps by hiring more talent, buying map companies etc. They should also let a Google maps app into the app store. If Apple maps are poor and Google is denied, then I am going over to Android. How can they approve of being second in so many areas with all that cash?? The difference between iPhone and Android have been so small. IOS 6 is to little to late? They need to fix the phone book so its easier to see missed calls, better multitasking app switching, easy acess to bluetooth/Wifi toggle, better camera app with black and white option, better, more 3rd party Siri widgets like Yelp and Wolphram Alpha today, better spelling and word suggestions when typing, automated background switching, Google intergration etc.
