This is good that they're allowing competition but I really wish they'd improve Apple maps.

With Apple allowing third party navigation apps into CarPlay, not mentioning Maps a single time during today’s presentation or in iOS 12 new features ( https://www.apple.com/ios/ios-12-preview/features/ ), I am also wondering what the future of Apple Maps might be like. I hope they are not giving up on it.

Well they are currently mapping streetviews around the world so I'm hoping they'll start integrating that data with Flyover. It's be AMAZING if they do it right. It'll be free-axis navigation with the detail of street details. That has so much more potential than the 2-axis system of Google streetview imo.

Anyway it is interesting that they didn't mention Apple Maps but it's hard to imagine they'd give up on it, especially since they're in the process of collecting the massive amount of street data.

I don’t think they will if they’re making a car. Or in the future the car can use data from all 3 maps and overlay the data?

I keep an Android phone plugged into my car at all times just for Android Auto. Specifically, for Google Maps, Audible, and Spotify. This may finally get me to use CarPlay instead, as long as Google Maps works with voice commands unlike Spotify.

Now, we've just got to convince Google to update the Maps app and the Waze app to support CarPlay. Wonder how long that will take?

In my dream world, I'll install the dev beta today and it will magically work on my way home.

Considering that Apple displayed both Google Maps and Waze icons on the screen, I think it is very likely that Google has already committed to upgrading their apps. (And why wouldn't they?)

Even if you get the Beta, you would need an updated App and those are typically not released to the public until the final shipping version of the O/S is released in the fall. (Unless you can get in to a private Beta.)

This is absolutely huge. A game changer. Android auto will probably become completely obsolete

Doesn't this require CarPlay 2? Which I assume means the car manufacturers will have to push out an upgrade. Wonder how long that will take?
In a word no. I’ve had other new apps show up on CarPlay without a major update

You didn't look very hard. Google came up with this as the first entry:

There’s no way apple wouldn’t have mentioned CarPlay 2 in the keynote if that was accurate

i've been running, meaning hearing, waze through my car play unit since January. I get the police reported ahead warnings and all the guidance but have to run Apple Maps without guidance to see a map on Car Play. So in the following configuration, you end up using both. Don't start Apple Maps and you just get the Waze guidance and alerts over Car Play.
You do have to make some changes in settings though to get this to work. Do so by turning on background app refresh for Waze on your iPhone, location services should be On under privacy, then under location services scroll down to waze and set it to always. Next connect your iPhone to Car Play and open Waze on your iPhone. again, Waze will not display on Car Play. Tap Go Now to your destination in Waze. Waze will speak to you over any Car Play app without closing it. Adjust the Car Play Guidance volume to be louder than the general volume and you're good to go. Will be great to finally get Waze maps on the screen though but this has worked great for me for half a year.

I just wish it would display album art if I choose to. The blurred out crap is horrible.

About time ! Long long overdue.
Now lets see if can do something with Homekit too, which is little more than an expensive Siri driven heap of Apple poo

My understanding of CarPlay is that all the software is on the phone so it should not require new hardware in the vehicle

I hope they kill it.

I did the same for my wife’s car. She has been using an Android phone with Android Auto in her car for over a year now. When I told her today that Google Maps is coming to CarPlay, she said she didn’t want to use CarPlay. She loves Android Auto. I do too. She doesn’t need to plug her iPhone in the car every time she needs to use Google Maps because the Android phone is always plugged in. Additionally, Siri will still be dumb as a rock even if Google Maps is on CarPlay. Google Assistant is so much smarter than Siri. It’s almost too late to bring Google Maps to CarPlay. This should have been done from the get go. At this point, too many people have tried Android Auto and fell in love.

It don't work yet. :(

Updated to Beta 1 today then went to my car and plugged into my CarPlay unit (New 2018 car) and no Waze icon. :(
Do you have it installed on your IOS device? If so, most likely the apps need updating or it hasn't been activated yet.

Anxious to hear more about this. My new VW has CarPlay. Used it on the way home from the dealer and have not tried it again since then. Third party apps would definitely be a reason to revisit CarPlay.

Try CarPlay again. I find that access to CarPlay apps like Music, Maps, Messages and WhatsApp to be extremely convenient from the dash. The phone is out of sight out of mind and for messages Siri does a reasonable job of text to speech and vice versa. The addition of Waze adds serious incentive to use it. Now that I have CarPlay in the car, I'm not buying another car without it. Good thing most car manufacturers are adding CarPlay – I'm calling you out, Tesla.

Given that CarPlay only works with Apple Maps today, I have been using Apple Maps a lot lately. It should come as no surprise that Maps works well in California, mine and Apple's home state. I often spot check the times and routes against Google Maps and I have to say I have not encountered a difference worth noting. While I look forward to Waze in CarPlay, I have recently had no complaints with Apple Maps in the car. YMMV, yadda yadda

The great thing about CarPlay is that your car is essentially only a monitor and all the software is driven by your phone, so it never needs replacing (except for certain things such as wireless CarPlay, etc).

Hard to tell, the car itself is still a concept, whereas using different maps in CarPlay will soon be a reality. Either Apple are quite confident about the Maps future to allow other players in or they are openly admitting their defeat. We will need to watch how it develops.

Amazing.

I'm now hoping this means Siri can be set to have Google Maps as its default Navigation App...I mean why have a third party Nav App in the car when you can't send voice commands to it (for safety)?

I’m sure both Waze and Google maps have to push an update on their end to activate it.

Most definitely. Google will have to update their apps to support the CarPlay API (and likely have to update the UI for CarPlay.) Unfortunately, Apple will not allow any Apps in to the public AppStore with iOS12 APIs until iOS12 is released in the fall. Until then only people with access the beta copies of the Google Apps (or any nav app) will be able to use them.
