You didn't look very hard. Google came up with this as the first entry:

https://9to5mac.com/2018/06/04/apple-wwdc-app-updates/

Carplay runs on your phone, so I don't see what would have to be updated on the car side.

Do you have it installed on your IOS device? If so, most likely the apps need updating or it hasn't been activated yet.

Yeah, Waze will have to update the App, I hope they beta test their new app, so we don't have to wait until fall.

Hard to tell, the car itself is still a concept, whereas using different maps in CarPlay will soon be a reality. Either Apple are quite confident about the Maps future to allow other players in or they are openly admitting their defeat. We will need to watch how it develops.

True, I think glasses with AR will come first.

Try CarPlay again. I find that access to CarPlay apps like Music, Maps, Messages and WhatsApp to be extremely convenient from the dash.

I'm glad that you find it useful, and I know that many others do as well. For me... no thanks. The 6" screen in my VW Tiguan is OK, but not all that impressive, and I built a custom mount for my iPhone 6s+ that works well if I want to use an iOS app.

But the real deal-killer for me is Siri. I hate everything about Siri and don't want it enabled on my phone. But carplay requires Siri to be enabled. Carplay would have to offer something a lot cooler than Apple Maps or Google Maps to get me to enable Siri. ;)

I had two gripes with CarPlay. Being unable to search for music with Spotify and not being able to use Google Maps. Now one of them is coming. This is the biggest news from WWDC for me :D I use CarPlay almost daily.

Spotify works now. You may already know that but I didn't infer it from your comment. Install Spotify on your iOS device and connect to CarPlay.

Really? What, as in asking for a specific album / artist? What is the syntax for doing this?

This was a terrific surprise.

[Per a recent post of mine] I've been saying Apple should do this for a year or more, i.e., open up to 3rd party maps/navigation. Since they already showed they're OK with having competitive services on CP like Spotify and heck even a Google product with Play Music, it made zero sense to limit other services - in fact, based on hundreds of comments I read over the last day, it should HELP to retain/create new Apple customers.

We just bought a new car that's CP/AA compatible, however a different make/model - so one of the big perks for us is a consistent UI across core features. I connect my iPX, I have my icons arranged, my expected content, things like Podcasts with a familiar experience, etc. It runs fantastic on this new uConnect 8.4" system as well (with CP info on the 7" drivers display).

Thanks for the comment. I see that I was unclear. I am already using Spotify with CarPlay, but it is not possible to search for music with Siri. There are only the curated playlists, browse and recently played (plus something else that I cannot remember from the top of my head). But say that I want to search for a specific song, artist or album. That currently is not possible and I wish it was. But seeing that Google Maps will soon be available I think there might be hope for using Siri with Spotify as well at some point in the future. At least one can hope :)

This is huge. I’m Actually surprised Apple is making this change. And now it allows for more diversity like Google Maps, which has its advantages over Apple Maps.

I'd love to see the data on CarPlay usage with the limited application compatibility. I have a CarPlay compatible head unit, and Apple Maps just doesn't cut it for me. Having Google Maps accessible will increase my CarPlay interaction.

I keep an Android phone plugged into my car at all times just for Android Auto. Specifically, for Google Maps, Audible, and Spotify. This may finally get me to use CarPlay instead, as long as Google Maps works with voice commands unlike Spotify.
What is the cheapest Android phone that can handle that ? I bought a J3 specially to only keep it in the car. Could not handle waze and Deezer app at the same time. Was very laggy and freezed a lot... Sold it the 2 days after purchase.

It don't work yet. :(

Updated to Beta 1 today then went to my car and plugged into my CarPlay unit (New 2018 car) and no Waze icon. :(

Same here. I was so excited and installed the 12 beta immediately on my phone. Then I connected it to my car (also a 2018 model) and got no luck. At that time I didn't give up. I called my car manufacturer (Audi) to check if they can do anything to make this work. They guided me to update the entertainment system of my car, but it was still not working. They said that's all they could do. So I had to give up. It looks like Google Maps needs an update as well. So we have to wait until fall. That's disappointing. Currently I'm using Audi Connect. It's expensive and the NAV, especially the live traffic overlay, is often inaccurate.

Great news this!

Just spent the past week driving around Germany using Apple Maps on CarPlay. The experience was, shall I say, frustrating.
All our saved locations etc are on Google Maps — Apple Maps unable to find many locations, route recommendations just weird.
And yikes — insult to injury, the excruciating pronunciation of place names. "Munchin' fluckhaven." Seriously?

Can't wait to finally use proper navigation on CarPlay.
:D

Yeah the actual voice of Apple Maps sounds muffled compared to that of Google Maps. It's less discernable at higher speeds that's for sure.

Beginning this fall with iOS 12, Apple will allow navigation apps to work with CarPlay, including both Google Maps and Waze.

The change was announced at WWDC, and -- for consumers -- could be one of the most immediately useful announcements made during the entire keynote.

Since CarPlay was first introduced a few years ago, Apple has prevented all navigation apps not named Apple Maps from working with CarPlay. This means that anyone who wanted to use an alternative app like Google Maps, Waze, or TomTom was forced to use a phone mount instead of the otherwise very useful CarPlay.

Apple didn't actually say when (or even if) Google Maps and Waze would be available with CarPlay, but MacRumors has reached out to Google and will update if we hear back.

OH, PLEEEZ, DEAR GOD -- LET THIS BE TRUE and let it come SOON!!! I travel 60 miles round trip DAILY in Chicago traffic and JUST got a new (to me at least) iPhone 6s (it's what I could afford!) -- BUT -- my WAZE does NOT pair with CarPlay in my 2017 Chevy Malibu -- NOT GOOD!!! Hope this changes SOONER than SOON!!!

Just leased a 2018 Nissan Altima that has Apple CarPlay. I have really enjoyed it since I have not connected my X to the car via Bluetooth. While I don't mind Apple Maps, I really am glade to hear Google Maps and Waze are coming to CarPlay with iOS 12 in the fall. I do like variety.

About damn time, Apple. I rely on Waze and Google maps several days per week with Android Auto. Using my iPhone and looking at its screen while driving while using Waze or Google maps is so unsafe. It has caused me to use Android as my daily driver phone. If this actually becomes a reality with iOS 12 release I will probably have no reason to bother with Android ever again. I assume many other people feel the same way. This is huge...and several years overdue.

For now, the last update for the beta program, it is not there (yet?)!!!
