Literally just yesterday I tried Apple Maps again after a while when navigating to a new place in Brooklyn.

Apple maps tried to take me to Jacksonville Florida.

So yeah, glad Google Maps is getting better with Carplay...

Eh, I've been happy with Apple Maps, especially in the car. Actually just yesterday there was a serious accident on the Mass Pike; while Apple Maps reflected the hour+ delay if I didn't reroute, Google Maps was showing a "normal" ETA despite reflecting the accident.

On Saturday Google Maps it also tried to tell my aunt that Ashville, NC was a 3 hour drive from Boston (albeit on an Android). It also loves to take me the wrong way down one-way streets. Apple Maps still has its bugs, but Google Maps is way overrated.

Would be great to have the option to have Google Maps the default map in CarPlay. Also, would be great if Apple Music stopped autoplaying every time I get into the car and plug-in my iPhone.

I dunno, seems a little too competitive for me. Apple better shut this down. /s

Really, though, I couldn't care less. I have used Apple Maps exclusively for the last couple of years and haven't looked back.
Apple already allowed it. That is they already released a dashboard that shows maps on the left and on the right not only shows audio and calendars, but other things such as homekit. And Apple allows third partys to use the maps on the left of the dashboard just Waze and Google have decided not to yet. With the release of this sounds like they won't which is too bad, since the Google version won't support homekit or other things that may appear on the dashboard version.

Does Google Maps / CarPlay app vibrate your AW when a turn/exit is coming up like the Apple Maps does? I sort of like that feature and it why I tend to use Apple Maps over Google (although I use both).

If this crap vibrates my wrist and drains the battery during an hour long drive, I will be forced to remove yet another Apple Watch app.

The only time I look back when using Apple Maps is when they send me to a wrong location.

If I’m going to a place that I frequent and more or less am looking for the time of arrival I’ll use Apple Maps. I still don’t rely on it if I’m gong to someplace I haven’t been before.

STOKED to hear this! I've been skeptical to use Apple Music or Apple Maps with my CarPlay so the dashboard has been basically useless for me. Glad to see that Google Maps can replace Apple's on the dashboard, I might actually use it now..

Skepticism suggests that you haven't been using it because of concerns established early on. Yes, Apple Maps had a rough start, but that was eons ago in technological time. It has improved dramatically, and I have preferred it over Google Maps most times. Google Maps would randomly fail to speak turn-by-turn directions, or would be late doing so. Apple Maps verbal cues have been perfect every time. Paired with the Apple Watch, and the experience is absolutely stellar. Now it sounds like Google fans will get to enjoy this same experience.

Do Android Smart Watches offer this type of integration between phone/car and watch for navigation? Is it automatic like the Apple Watch?

Sounds like you don't like the nudges to tell you when to turn? You can turn that off.

That is literally what this is, returning to the CarPlay Dashboard will show your current Google Maps map and route.

Google Maps dashboard doesn’t appear to be rolled out for everyone just yet...

I just made sure I had all iOS and app updates installed (including Google Maps), but when I tried to use Google Maps in CarPlay on my 2019 Honda Oddyssey, the dashboard button or option isn’t available - no matter what you do. And yes, I know how to invoke the Dashboard view...

I also verified my actual car had it’s head unit system software updates.

The communication from Google and this article is misleading because the split view / dashboard for Google Maps is NOT live today for all users as Google stated in their announcement

For a long time, I used to use Google Map but switched to using Apple Map. Amaze to see Apple Map is now better than Google Map or at least I like it. Wish I can set Apple Map as a default Map irrespective from which browser the link for Direction is clicked. Come on Apple, can you not let us make your own Apple Map as default on your iPhone ? It can't be anti-trust or anti-competitive issue.

has it hit the app store yet? last update i see is a week ago
Google seems to say that the CarPlay dashboard part of it should already be available, but it doesn't appear to be working currently. Not sure if there's an update that is needed that has been held up (given that the announcement went out), or if there's something else that's in play.

Finally. Split screen view is one of the major reasons I use Apple maps with carplay and not Google maps

Thank you google, finally google maps is back on the Apple Watch. Apples own maps are really subpar, at least in Europe. They’re borderline useless, often wasting ones time with routes that don’t even work. I rarely use it and I wish I could change the default map app to google maps on all iDevices!!
Google maps, as sad as it is, is without competition for my use case. The maps are pretty good and the routing and traffic algorithms are amazingly accurate. Two hour trips, the expected time of arrival is usually within 5 minutes even with construction sites and traffic jams. For walking or cycling directions Apple Maps usually knows nothing but major roads, laughable!
Openstreetmaps has the most accurate maps by far here, but no good frontend/app. Too bad
Apple? Much better routs.
